I was preparing the evening meal last night when I heard Bonnie
growling. She was lying on the carpet with Clyde and he was trying to
play with her. She never growls and cries like that so I
investigated. Yikes. Her back leg had big gouges of flesh out of it
from top to bottom. She couldn't stand up and was in obvious pain.
I got her to the emergency vet. It wasn't done by a dog (my first
thought) because there was no saliva, it wasn't done by a car. He
thought she had got her back leg caught in a fence and had torn off the
flesh and injured ligaments getting it free. You couldn't touch her on
the back hind quarters.
He gave her morphine for the pain and antibiotics for the wounds and
some other injections for the inflamation. She was in shock and her
little heart was racing. He said to leave her in the carry cage that
night.
I thought I would leave Clyde in the kitchen with her but the first
thing he did was squeeze himself into the cage with her and bite her
ear. He spent the night with FSP in the cat house!! Cats purr when
they are happy but they also purr when they are in pain. After the
morphine wore off she was purring like a train.
This morning she is a lot better. She ate a little of her favourite
food, a good sign. She can walk now, although falls over
occcasionally, is very stiff, still uncomfortable and in pain. She has
taken up residence in the carry cage, guess it is a comfort to be in a
dark, confined space like that when a kitty doesn't feel well. The
emergency vet said to see how she was this morning and that perhaps she
should go to her own vet for an X ray if no better. We'll see. Lois
will be in later with a bigger cage for her and so we will have another
diagnosis :)
I have no idea where she damaged herself. She was fine half an hour
before it happened although I did spy Deo walking away down the drive.
Perhaps he chased her and she tore up a tree or jumped a fence. Poor
little thing, I hate seeing her like this.

Oh, jeez! I read the subject line but didn't associate it with anything as
bad as this!
I hope poor Bonnie heals up well and that soon she'll be as good as new.

Poor Bonnie. I hope she heals quickly. Anything can happen outside.
It might have been a stray dog. I'm so sorry she is hurt.

It wasn't a dog, as mentioned later in Bev's post. No saliva in the wound.

OUCH, poor Bonnie! Purrs and purr-ayers for her speedy recovery!
I'm reminded on a daily basis that hooli-kittens can get into more
mischief in one minute than we could imagine in a week. :o( This afternoon
I discovered a torn-open package of silica gel on the living room rug. You
know those little things that are packed in boxes, etc, to absorb
moisture? And are labelled, "Do not eat"? Well, it's anybody's guess where
in heck they found it. (I have my theories, as we've blocked a few areas
forbidden to kitty access with empty shoeboxes. Maybe one of them was
slightly less empty than I thought.)
Anyway, in my long-winded way, I'm just reminding you that even our best
efforts to make an area cat-safe can't prevent every accident, especially
when active, creative kitties are involved. So don't beat yourself up.
Just spoil Bonnie a bit extra.

Thanks for the purrs gang. Lois has been here and patting Bonnie.
The kitty is feeling a lot better but is very wobbly on her pins. She
is out of her carry box now and lying in a patch of sunlight in the
patio, and she got there under her own steam.
I have looked all around our garden for bits of fur and skin but found
nothing. For all I know she could have been caught up a tree and
fallen perhaps. She is a compulsive climber but is also very sure on
her feet.
I was talking to my friend Helen (the lady with the new computer) and
she told me that she had a terrible scare with Mini, her dear little
black and white companion kitty. Helen had to take some aspirin and
Mini had to take a pill also. Both pills looked alike and somehow
Helen got them mixed up and gave Mini her aspirin! Ye Gods, we all know
that aspirin is very bad for kitties. Fortunately it was a low
strength but it was panic stations for her and necessitated a trip to
the emergency vet. Fortunately Mini is OK.
I'll keep you posted about Bonnie.

Yes, I did wonder whether I should get her checked out by her regular
vet but she looked so relaxed to-day that I decided to leave it and see
if she improved on her own. Then her regular vet rang and said he
would like to do some X rays, so he made an appointment for tomorrow.
She has eaten a good meal this afternoon, half a small tin of tuna and
whitebait liberally covered with water as she hasn't had anything to
drink. We'll see how she is tomorrow.
