After the last few times of giving Cosmo fluids being pretty much
disasters in my book, I took a deep breath, and managed to actually
get the needle in gently with a nice, smooth motion, and Cosmo didn't
budge! I warmed the fluids ahead of time. Except for wanting to
scratch his ears once, he pretty much stayed there getting the fluids
without incident. However, true to my form of screwing *something*
up, afterwards, while trying to get the needle out of the venoset, I
managed to prick my own finger. I suppose I can live with a little
pain if it means Cosmo doesn't have any!

That's very good news, GL. You will continue to improve, and
hopefully, Cosmo will, too.

I wonder if he's starting to make the connection between "I get fluids" and
"I feel better"? The more it improves how he feels, the more I'd expect
him to pick up on that particular cause and effect. And the more
cooperative I think he'll be when it's time for fluids.
I still remember the very senior kitty named Spike, whose Meowmy posted on
rec.pets.cats back in the day, who stood there and yowled at her when she
was late in doling out the sub-q fluids. He started out as
none-too-pleased about the treatments, but eventually he not only got used
to them, he started insisting on them.
I'm glad the session was uneventful for Cosmo! Here's hoping that it
continues to get easier to do the treatments!

Clearly, practice makes perfect. =o) When you learn a new skill to use on a
wiggling animal who's not thrilled by the initial idea, you have to expect
the first few times to be a little rough. It's kind of like cooking in an
unfamiliar kitchen. I hope Cosmo realizes you're doing this to help because
you love him.

I've done that more than once to myself, Ginger-lyn; glad it went much
better this time (except for the finger part!)

Good news (though sorry about your finger) - I'm sure it'll just get easier

Awwww, sorry about your finger prick but glad you're getting better and
Cosmo is doing better as a result. Continued purrs. You'll be vying for

Warming the fluids maybe helped the injection and his reaction. It
does take practice to get good at anything. And cats pick up your
emotions, so that can add a factor to the operation. We are sending
purrs for you to be calm and positive and Cosmo to be relaxed. It is
just an opportunity to be cuddled, right?

Those disasters you speak of couldn't have been that bad or Cosmo
would be getting all squirmy. I'm sure you're not hurting him or he'd
let you know. Purrs that the fluids give him a high quality life.

Good to hear that you're gitting into the routine. Purrs for continued
success. Do you think Cosmo has started associating the treatment with
feeling better?

I think so. And I'm sure he's associated the fluids with the treats
he gets afterwards!

That's good. :o) Nikki is so funny the times I have to give her meds
with the syringe. (Sometimes she will eat them mixed with sourcream,
sometimes she just refuses, and then I have to mix the meds with water
and give them to her with the syringe.) While I prepare the syringe,
Nikki slinks under the bed. I leave the syringe ready on the counter,
and then just sit down and watch TV, ignoring Nikki completely. Nikki
comes out of hiding and slinks past me a couple of times, keeping just
out of reach. Then back to hiding under the bed. It's as if she's
saying, 'hey, weren't you supposed to run me down and catch me?' The
third or fourth time she lets me catch her. I give her the meds, and
then she slinks back under the bed, but comes back immediately for her
after-medicine treats. She knows exactly what is going on the whole
time, she'd just much rather skip the medication and go directly to the
treat-giving. She has to make that final trip under the bed to show me
she is displeased with having been forcefully medicated, but she can't
stay away in case she misses the treats.
