Tennessee had his yearly jabs a week ago. (he's lost about 2 lbs since last
year (was 15, now closer to 13). His teeth are pretty yucky looking (plaque
& tarter buildup, but no signs of abscesses). Since he is a "94 model"
(TED's words), we decided to have a bloodworkup done before scheduling him
for a dental exam/cleaning/extraction (if necessary). Bloodwork came back
OK.
BUT...
He has now come down with what seems to be a cold. He is snuffly, sniffly &
sneezy, his nose is all snotty. I have made an appt for him to see TED this
afternoon. Please purr that this is a cold, and not something worse (tumor
in the sinuses sort of thing)., and that he gets over it quickly so he can
have his teeth worked on.

Poor baby! That's an extreme range of possibilities, cold or tumor.
It's easy to tell you're worried. It may be something he picked up at
TED's. I picked up some sort of bug when I visited Doris in the
hospital -- was sick as a d*g all day yesterday. We're sending purrs
that it's nothing serious.

Purrs for Tennessee. Frank has always had problems with his teeth, and
he's always had problems with his nose too. It seems to me that when his
gums get infected, the infection rises up into his nose as well. So the
two things can be connected. A vet once confirmed this theory of mine.
She said the infection can, indeed, spread like that.

Indeed it can. In fact, gum disease and problems with teeth can even be
connected to heart problems in humans. My DH has terrible teeth (thanks,
heredity!) and has had 2 heart attacks (a quintuple bypass resulted from the
last one). He's trying to gear himself up for having his teeth replaced
with implants. It ain't cheap!

The cold came on all-of-a-sudden, a week after his blood was drawn (which
was a couple days after his yearly). I don't his sinus woes are connected
to his poor oral hygene, I think it might have come on due to the stress of
traveling to TED (2X in one week) compromising his immune system. He
screamed all the way there both times, and now he's got to do it again.
Poor (snotty) baby. He'll probably get some antibiotics.

I have a suggestion to run by your vet-ask him if it's worthwhile to
test Tennessee for Bartonella. Sabastian had been having colds every
few months and occasional sneezing fits and after this kept recurring
the vet suggested testing him for Bartonella, sure enough he had it.
Bartonella can manifest itself in a variety of symptoms, one of which
is stomatitis (a gum infection). The treatment is a three week session
of antibiotics. Apparently Bartonella is not uncommon among cats and
its symptoms are so varied that often the cat is thought to have some
other ailment. I believe the test they use for it is a fairly recent
development.

Well, the appt went OK, and he now has a round of anti's to go through.
There was a very hyper-active/playful shepard mix (with his slave) in the
waiting room. Poor doggie wanted to play with Tennessee, but we only let
him poke his head out of the carrier twice. Once there was a big yellowish
boogie hanging from his nose. We left it for TED to see when it was
Tennessee's turn, but he either wiped it off on the inside of the carrier or
licked it off himself (eeeeeewwwwwww) before then. Up till then I'd only
seen clear discharge. TED didn't think it was connected to his poor oral
hygene. He *is* eating, so he isn't feeling that bad. He seemed a whole lot
better today than he did yesterday.
