Tummy Rubs--A Poll

Mary - 02 Mar 2005 05:32 GMT My little grey tabby Cheeks loves to have her belly rubbed. She is the first cat I have ever had that likes this.
It was not something she revealed to me right away when I adopted her in 2001 at age 2. She had been with us for about three months when one night during our nightly petfest when I was scritching her head and back she rolled over on her side and lifted her leg up like it was on a hinge. Because I had cats that did not like their bellies touched, I was surprised. But I rubbed her pink little belly and she went all googly eyed and purred up a storm. I think the great people at Snowflake Animal Shelter got her used to this. She was said to have been a feral who had been at the shelter for four months when I adopted her.
Does your cat like tummy rubs?

I missed her so much I decided to adopt a shelter cat to fill the void. The 6 to 8 month old kitten was found on a highway wandering and starving. Some kind person got her to a rescue group and they named her Ginger. She is a mixed tabby and white. The name didn't fit and I kept calling her Princess. So I decided to name her Princess too. She did not respond to either name. So I started calling her "Two" -- still no response. One day I was talking to her and referred to her as TuTu she came running -- really named herself. No connection to Desmond whatever. The name just evolved...and she is happy with it. She will or is (?) eight years old now. MLB

wafflycat - 02 Mar 2005 06:00 GMT > Does your cat like tummy rubs? Marble is just a tart and he loves his belly rubbed. He loves having his back legs up over his head whilst he gets the back of his thoughs rubbed. Told you he was just a tart ;-) Francis loves his belly rubbed too - but he goes into "longcat" mode and stretches out on the floor, on his side, so he can get his belly rubbed.
Waffles is a highly refined ladycat who is extremely particular about who she will allow to rub her belly and when. She is not a tart - unlike the boys ;-)

I have to say, Pan is a fine name for a boycat! Have you ever read a book called Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins? Pan plays a major role in that book.

He loves to be chased around the house and tummy rubs usually instigate a good chase game. -- Britta ==============================================
Spicey only allows limited petting. Joanne, one on my helpers, will grab her and pet her up. Spicey will shake it off run away then come back for more. Like Vino she loves being chased, even by my wheelchair.

Two yeses, two nos. Sammy will "kill you to death" if you try to run her tummy (but then again, she tries to "kill you to death" whenever you get near her - she's still in that kitten play fighting stage, sigh). Demi is *way* too afraid to ever expose her belly to anyone - she barely exposes any part of herself to anyone. Jessie likes it. Bandit will chew your arm off at the elbow if you are anyone but me, for me she rolls over and purrs (people think I'm crazy because I even give her bugga bellies - you know, when you turn a cat over on her back, stick your face in her belly, shake your head back and forth and murmur "bugga, bugga, bugga" into her belly - people are surprised I still *have* a face after trying that stunt!).

Katz - 02 Mar 2005 17:31 GMT I've not had many cats that like, or allow, tummy rubs. Sweet, cuddly, passive Bonnie (RB) had 2 rules: Don't touch my feet, and Don't touch my belly. Abby (RB) & I would hand wrestle when I gave her belly rubs, & she would bunny kick me. Ouch! Of my current crew, Daisy purrs & headbutts if I rub her belly while she's standing up. (There's a place in my room where she stands at face level.) She doesn't lie down & ask for it. Miss Moxie the Tough would shred me if I touched her belly. Our relationship is strictly on her terms, which change daily. As one of the collection of cat haiku that I can't find, says (something like):
Touch me now I shred your hand. New rule tomorrow.

If I had tried it with Gnarly she would have bit me to the bone. She was a wild cat. I adored her. There were times when we understood each other well because we had similar temperaments. :) Believe it or not I have mellowed with age. Thank God.

Actually, I don't do the cradling, I still can't see holding a cat like that. It's DH who does it. She's more his cat, she's daddy's girl :) She will lay upside-across him on the couch, it's so cute!

KellyH - 03 Mar 2005 21:59 GMT > Did Dash have one of those high-pitched growls that went on and > on and raised the hairs on the back of your neck?? :) Not so much. She had this meow that wasn't really a meow. It sounded like "maarmp". She's the one that peed on DH's coat when we were late coming home. That was so her. DH said one morning, she was standing on my chest and pushing my forehead with her paw and going "maarmp". Somehow, I slept through that. She also dumped a glass of water on me one morning. Didn't sleep through that one!

Yep, that's about how all the cats I have known until Cheeky were. Surprisingly there ARE a lot of cats that do like it judging from this very informal poll!

Willow loves belly rubs. We just came back from a session where I was teaching the little man to pet softly. He promptly picked up her tail and bit it. Session ended.

She stretches out beside me and does what I call "the boneless cat," just totally relaxes into a flat cat and waits to be petted from her head to her toes. This is the first cat I have had that seeks out affection. What a treat!

This is exactly like Oscar. I've found I'm allowed to rub her tummy if I do it while she's standing and I'm above her -- I reach my hands down and rub. But if she's showing her belly, it's just a ploy! It's not playful, either; she hisses and gets really upset as she's grabbing your arm and clawing it.

This is my buddha! She lies on her back displaying her bikini for all to see, but if you touch her belly, her reflex is to crab up and clamp down on your hand and bite, too! But not too hard.

Since DP still cares for them, and since they firmly believe DP to be their natural mother, they've never really outgrown kittenhood. (HE raised them from 3 weeks of age.)

Donna - 04 Mar 2005 23:11 GMT Captain and Stanley love tummy rubs, and are fine with being petted just about anywhere. They let me handle their feet, tail, ears, tummy, you name it.
Of course, I helped that process along with them, and with my previous cats who DIDN'T necessarily like their toes, tail, belly, etc touched at first. To get cats who objected to that sort of contact accustomed to it, when I was in the middle of a major dote session, and said cat was in total bliss, THEN I'd sneak in a brief tummy tickle. Or toe touch, tail touch, etc. Then I'd go right back to petting and fussing over the cat the "normal" way.
The result would be a momentary glare in my general direction when I made contact with the off-limits site, after which the cat would return to purring and generally blissing out. :o)
If you do that enough times, the cat gets used to being handled. Eventually.
But it helped matters a lot when it came to building trust. I became grateful that the cats would let me do anything with them, when the time came for me to administer pills, insulin shots (Misty), and syringe-feedings and sub-Q fluids (Harmony) to the cats.
Interestingly enough, I saw a brief segment on a dog-training show on Animal Planet about a technique called "gentling", where it showed how people can train their puppies to be amenable to handling. The process involves taking the dog and deliberately spending a few minutes per day handling its feet, carefully flexing its legs by hand, turning it over on its back for a few moments, etc. Then I realized that I'd done something similar to my cats, without realizing that it was a training technique.
Anyway, if you have a cat that objects to certain types of handling, this might be a way to acclimate them to it.

We got him when he was only 6.5 weeks old, so he was young enough for us to have really made an impression. His mom cat wouldn't feed her kittens, so he was hand raised by hoomins. I think all these things combined have contributed to making him so...malleable ;-) -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! If I ever raise an animal from a baby I will do just what you describe. It might work with older animals too. It honestly never occured to me to try to train Gnarly this way, but then the first thing she did to me the day we met was bite me-- to the bone. I think she had been abused as a stray. I loved her anyway, all 20 years she lived! But now that i know how nice it is to have a cuddly cat, if I ever get to have another cat I will try to encourage it.

So is my cat Cheeky. Around here, both girly cats love to be petted by both of us, but they only get rapturous over Daddy. I think they just like that boy smell. Like Gossamer, they positively *flirt* with him. Buddha falls asleep on him in a little headstand kind of pose, the top of her head on his leg and her chin tucked in. I can't say much, as I like him too. 8)

Meanwhile, I was explaining to him that he really needs to learn how to wash his undercarriage, or it will soon be as grey as his "jacket", and then he won't be a tuxedo cat!
