CatNipped - 01 Mar 2005 20:24 GMT OK, I finaly started to carry out my promise to get my own, personal, web site up again. Although it's far, far from finished (most of the pages are still blank), I would like some feedback, if you don't mind) on the structure and design.

Karen - 01 Mar 2005 20:40 GMT Oh I love how the little kitty eyes open and close. ONce again I am astounded by Jessie's eyes. As much as she likes cameras, we need more piccies of her!

But as you *did* ask for feedback I might venture an opinion of the size of the text. It may be a bit small to read for some of us. If there is a size that's one notch bigger than the text on the opening page and the smaller text on the story page (they're the same size, right??), but maybe not as big as the headers on the story page. Of course it all boils down to one's individual screen resolution, but being a typesetter's daughter I seem to stick to text issues...

I also tried that and it indeed does change - wow! Ya learn something every day! :)
Btw, browserwise I'm usually on Mozilla Firefox. But I did look at the site also on Netscape and Avant Browser (= an IE-knock-off with tabbed browsing and popup control) just to compare. NS and MozFF look the same but on Avant the text looks bigger. When I sized it down one notch, it looked the same as on the other two. The photos and pictures are the same both sizewise and locationwise. (I've seen differences there too on different browsers).
All in all it promises to be a great site once you get it finished. Wish I was as clever with HTML-coding... :)

At work I do a *LOT* more sophisticated web programming. For instance, our vice presidents have to get attendance from the depot managers in their region (East, West, Latin America, and Corporate). What they used to do was have a secretary create an Excel spreadsheet, the DMs would save the file, change the file, save the changes, then send the changed file to the VPs. Then the VPs had to open each file (each VP has about 15 DMs, or "reports"), keep track of who submitted their attendance, send out reminders to those who didn't, then when they all reported the VP had to send an email to HR.
Now, one of the VPs travels a lot so he asked me to keep track of all his DMs attendance. *NO WAY* - if they don't listen to their *boss* about reporting attendance, they sure weren't going to listen to me when I asked them.
So, I created an automated calendar on our intranet site that has all the holidats mared, but every other weekday has radio buttons for "Vacation, Sick Day, Flex Holiday, Jury Duty, or None". The calendar also checks whether or not they have taken their "Choice" holiday (either MLK day or President's day, but not both) and if one has been taken the other is not available to take. The calendar also checks to see if their one "Flex" holiday has been taken and if it has it won't let them take another.
Every month, on the first of the month the page sends out automated reminder emails to each of the "reports" - with a link for them to click to get to the calendar. They just have to click the link, then choose which / what type of days they took (all days default to "None" so if they haven't taken a day they don't have to click), then they hit "Submit" and they're done (no more saving / changing / saving / sending and Excel spreadsheet, so it only takes them about a minute as opposed to 5 - 10 minutes each month, so the DMs *love* the new system).
Every day after the first that a DM *doesn't* submit an attendance report they get *another* automated email reminder (with the link to click) and their VP gets an automated email listing all his DMs who *haven't* reported attendance yet. Once all the DMs report attendance the VP gets an email listing all the days each DM took off (and what type of absence it was) so that the VP just has to forward that email to HR.
So now all the VPs have to do is click forward on one email and they don't have to compile a report from emailed spreadsheets and they don't have to track down those DMs who haven't reported (unless they keep getting an email with the names of persons who haven't reported after an unreasonable length of time). So the VPs *love* the new system.
And I don't have to do anything at all - so *I* love the new system.
Anyway, that's the type of stuff I do for a living. [Sorry, this got long!!!]

But that automated attendace report system seems really great! And you only did what any smart enough employee with the required skills would do - eliminate yourself out of a tedious equation such as that one. Good job!

Good job! We had one of those attendance systems (outsourced) at my former job. It was the department supervisor's responsibility to make sure the "time cards" were filled out correctly with proper types of days off, hours off, etc. and then approve it. Certainly wasn't the responsibility of the person who wrote the application!

I write applications for the web site (which I created) and I also answer the phones, run the fax machine, make coffee, pay my boss' traffic tickets, approve vendor invoices, etc., etc., etc.

[quoted text clipped - 20 lines] > All in all it promises to be a great site once you get it finished. Wish I > was as clever with HTML-coding... :) There's actually a setting in firefox that allows you to *permanently* set all fonts to be larger than the size specified on the site. Unfortunately, you need a plugin to access it; it's not part of the standard settings. Anyway, if text size often bothers you, this setting could help.
I've gotten very accustomed to just typing "ctrl, +" on many webpages, which is the keystroke to increase the font size in mozilla.

Thanks! I thought I had the text sized "relatively", e.g. if you have "View/Text/[size]" on your browser selected for your reading comfort it *should* size to that. I'll have to go look at it again (should be easy to fix, I used a CSS so I just have to adjust the one file).
Again, thanks for the feedback, and *YES* I want honest opinions - I want to make the site user friendly and the only way to do that is to listen to what the users have to say!!

Up until last week, broadband was available in my "elephant village" for a mere $800/month. It was a bit steep for me ;-) Then last week it became available to everyone for $25/month. A friend signed up immediately and I was very excited and ready to sign up. But my friend reports that it's got so many problems, it's slower than dial-up. So I'm not going to sign up for it until I hear more favourable reports from people who already have it. So I'm stuck on dial up, although it's been pretty good lately, I'm usually getting about 40 kbps with my new computer. It's just funny that your site allows the top cat to rollover and not the rest of them. I'll check it again today. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. The only thing that I might suggest is if you could make the font bolder. With my particular problem, it's not so much the size of the font but the lack of definition with a font like you've used in the main text that makes it hard for me to read. The colour also. But, not to bypass this issue but as a tip you might want to use on other sites, did you know that you can adjust your font in your browser so you can read all pages easier. First one is easy. Click on "View" then "Type" then select the size you want. The second is a bit harder, and it won't change the font type on pages that use a style sheet (like mine) but try going to "Tools" then "Internet Options" then the "Fonts" button on the bottom. Then you can select what type of font you want to use on web pages that do not have a font type specified.

For me, the more contrast between background and text, the better in terms of readability.
