Heating up Gooshy Food?

I know there has been some discussion of this in the past.  Persia loves her
Rx gooshy food but she will only eat a half a can at a time, then she
switches over the the crunchy stuff.  The cans are 5.5 oz. (156g).  So I
give her half a can and cover the remainder and put it in the fridge.  She
doesn't seem to mind it straight from the fridge, cold.  But I seem to
remember others saying they warmed 'leftover' gooshy food in the microwave
to take the chill off.  What do you do?

Periodically we care for Bud, a relative's diabetic cat, who eats gooshy
food a quarter-tin at a time. There's a debate about whether the cat prefers
the refrigerated leftovers slightly heated (nuked 5 seconds) or not. I say
yes. My S.O. says no. It's a standoff because Bud seems indifferent to our
decisions and eats it anyway.

I just let Oscar eat it straight from the fridge.  I've tried warming food
when she's not interested, and it didn't seem to help.

However, because of my work schedule, I just leave Oscar's food dish out until
the next meal ... so there's plenty of time for it to get to "room
temperature" on its own.

They seem to vary-- Mimi *demanded* it be warmed up, Stinky plows
right in, cold or room temp.

Hi Jill -

I heat mine up slightly.  I get funny looks from most of my friends, but
then again, they'd do that anyway...;)  I started keeping the food in
the refrigerator so it wouldn't spoil, and then realized that the fur
kids didn't eat it as readily when it was cold.  Just by way of
experimentation, I warmed up some that they *had* liked, but were
suddenly indifferent about, and they dove right in.  I figured that
if they *didn't* then they were just being cats, but it made a
difference, so I've continued to do it.  Besides, it's the least I
can do for the furry little beasties, since they live in the house more
than I do...:)

The microwave is our friend ;-)

I always warm up leftover food in the microwave.  Some of the cats may
not care, but it seems like most of them prefer it warmed slightly.

What are these "leftovers" you talk about?

If you're referring to me saying that the cats gets a quarter-can serving
per meal, it seems pretty obvious that "leftovers" means what's left over in
the can.

Actually, in my original post I indicated I feed Persia 1/2 a can and have
leftovers.  He was being facetious since he and his DH have *seven* cats so
there is no such thing as leftovers :)

Seven seconds in the nuker, stir, and another 4.  Stir - test with
fingie to see if it's cool enough.  Allow Peewee to lick food off of
fingie.  Mimi then feels slighted, so she gets a lick as well.  Then
back to Peewus - then to Mimi.  The dogs want some - so there they go.
Now the fingie smells like dog slobber, so the kit-cats are disgusted
and won't eat the food, fingie or no fingie.  Throw can of leftover
food in the trash.

Rusty doesn't mind eating  his leftover prescription canned food straight
from the fridge. I only warmed the food in the microwave when he lost
his appetite while on antibiotics, or on very cold days.

When we only had one cat, our beloved Misty (RB), we used to give her
four quarter-can servings a day.  We heated the last three, and she
seemed to like it.

At the time, I remember reading about a survey they were starting on
how many times a day people used their microwaves.  I always wondered
if they wanted the replies to include total usage or just the times
you used it for human food.

Cats being individuals, I guess it all depends on their persaonl
taste. Sammy would be happy to eat the Hills k/d from the fridge, but
LB wants it warmed enough so that the aroma is released. Another
reason to warm it up around here - when cold it doesn't smush up as
easily, and LB will carry the chunks into the living room to eat on
the carpet. Wouldn't be a problem if she ate all the chunks, but of
course she has to leave the occasional chunk in the middle of the
carpet for big footed hoomins to step on when wearing socks or
barefooted.
