This is sick!

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/03/01/mccartney.fur.reut/index.html

Please write your representatives to put a ban in place.  We need a
25-nation bloc total ban in order to get this trade halted.

I agree, it's sick.  I had no idea this trade was going on.  Does the U.S.
allow these imports?  The article was specifically referring to Europe so I
think it's unlikely.

I do doubt that they are imported into the US - unless under flase pretenses
(as in labeled as other critters).

Considering the stink PETA makes over regular fur (let alone the poultry
farming techinques), imagine if they got wind of someone importing Fido- or
Fluffy-fur coats??!?!?!?  I wouldn't want to be in the same county as PETA,
let alone the same city/town (or even state, for that matter)!

Cat and dog fur trade has been going on for a long time. It's enough to
make you sick just reading about it--particularly in China where cats
are raised on tethers for the purpose of harvesting the fur. IIRC the
US has a ban in place on dog and cat fur, but big whoopee, generally
they just mis-label it as rabbit fur or something. One particularly
disgusting product -- and I'm sure you've all seen it -- are the little
figurines that look like little sleeping (or dead) kittens. They're
actually made out of cat fur.

I just don't get this.  I also blow a gasket when I see someone
wearing a fur coat or jacket walking a dog.  Would they like their dog
made into a coat? :P

Yes, I've seen them here in Australia too  :^(
DH and I saw them at a local nursery (plant nursery) - curled up
concrete forms with real cat fur on the outside and plastic button
eyes.  Just before Christmas.  What a sick and horrible thing;
especially when you consider someone ignorant might think it a
suitable present for a cat-lover.
I made *loud* comment in the crowded store about the revoltiness of
using real cat fur on such a think (I'm not too impressed by the
frivolous use of any real animal fur on such things); enough of a
noise that most of the folks in the store knew my feelings
(embarrassing poor DH).  We noted, next time we visited a week or two
later, that all of the figurines had been removed from display and
I've not seen them since.  For what it's worth; we decided not to
bother going back into the store, but I wanted to check if the
figurines were still there so that I could call the RSPCA and raise
h*ll.

Tish - who doesn't indulge in public outcries very often, but was
moved to outrage on this instance.

Tish, could you be so kind as to indulge in some public outcry on
behalf of the repulsive killing/skinning/eating of Hindu Gods? Yes,
cows are Gods to the Hindus, perhaps your "they should't kill what we
consider as pets" self-righteousness can be paid forward in not killing
other's Gods.

Good luck to you in removing all the beef from meat stands.

Yes they do. At one point there was talk of a federal ban on dometic
animal (cat and dog) fur, but it wasn't passed, IIRC.   The fur lobby
is too big - they fear that is dog and cat fur is banned, rabbit,
raccoon, beaver, etc. will be next. (and *what's wrong with that*? I
ask...)

Burlington Coat Factory was selling dog-fur coats as recently as 5
years ago.  They were labeled "Mongolian canine" but they were GDS-like
domestic dog fur.  People (including PeTA) made a big stink and BCF
said they would quit selling them, but I found them in the stores long
after they said they'd quit.

I was leafing through a fashion magazine while waiting to get my
haircut the other day, and I was shocked that the whole fur craze is
back again. Or did it ever go away? I seem to remember that faux fur
was *in* for a while.

About 2-3 years ago real fur was seen as *so* passe - and many of the
fur farmers went out of business.  But we are back into the "me first"
mentality, and fur is on the rise again.  It all just looks like dead
animals to me.  Yuck.

A couple days ago I had a dream about educating Sherry Riddles (of all
people) about wearing fur.  Now I know that Sherry never would, but in
my dream, when I met her (for the first time) she had on a full-length
chinchilla.  I told her that over 150 animals died to make her coat and
she was astonished.  LOL...I think the dream was prompted by the
Toadsuck, Arkansas thread....

ROFL!  If you feel up to "educating" someone, come to our Humane
Society's annual Ball. All the little old blue-haired ladies show up
wearing their full-length furs. No joke! Now, I realize they've owned
those furs for decades, and they probably just *wait* for an occasion
to wear them. So they'd be a little difficult to "educate" especially
since they're in their 80's and 90's. Still, it's hard for me to resist
saying, "May I take your coat, Ma'am? And bury it in the back yard
where dead animals belong?"
Also, I have a "Fur is Dead" sticker on my car. I really get a lot of
comments on it, people asking what it means.
I'm also the person who almost got kicked off of e-bay for writing
harassing letters to the bulk sellers of those cat-fur figurines.
Now I"m getting wound up. This topic always winds me up.
You know what winds me up almost as much as dog and cat fur? Seeing
lynx coats for sale. How could *anyone*  wear one of those.

Oh, if people will wear baby seals who were clubbed to death, they'll wear
anything!  What do they care that an breathing, *FEELING* animal was
horribly put to death so that they could be fashionable?!

I wish they were clubbed - it was a more merciful death than the one
insisted on by animal rights people.

And I'm certainly not going to criticize people for wearing dead animals
as long as I have dead cows on my feed and in my freezer.

Oh, I have no problems with killing animals in order to provide sustenance.
I don't even have problems with killing animals back where there weren't
synthetic materials to provide warm clothing.  I simply object to people
killing animals solely for fashion.

ITA.  Plus I have real problems with the husbandry practices of fur

You're kidding, right, I hope?

As I said in another post, if it's one thing that really blows my
gaskets, it's seeing someone in a fur coat walking a dog.  And it
always seems to be one of those little foofoo yappy dogs.  I always
feel like saying to them, "How many little 'Fifis' do you think it
would take to make a coat like that?

My mom has a raccoon jacket, a mink wrap (it's whole mink pelts - heads,
legs, tails and all!) and a wool coat with a mink collar.  Dad bought them
for her back in the 1950's.  Guess who (being the only daughter) is going to
inheirit them? (sigh)  What the hell am *I* gonna do with them?  If I try to
sell them, a kind-hearted person like yourself will bash me to death on
eBay!

There are some animal shelters and rescues who will accept them to
make kitten beds out of them.

There's a thought.  The wool coat, I can probably have the collar replaced
with more wool.  It's a *really* nice coat.  The mink wrap is literally 4 or
5 whole mink bodies sewn together - it's creepy looking.  Wouldn't make a
good bed, I'm thinking.  Maybe the raccoon jacket would.  It's just past hip
length and "swingy" in the style that was the 1950's.

Could you give them a proper burial?

I hate ranches raising fur animals for fur sake only.  I really feel
that if your going to raise that mink for its fur, you'd better be
eating the meat as well.  Funnily enough, my father worked on a Mink
ranch in Wisconsin in the 30s, as a young adult.  He really hated minks
after that.  They stink, are mean, and will eat their young.  This was
strange, as my father had those same characteristics.

I once worked with a woman who had a real knuckle-dragger as a DH.
Well, I was at a party at their house once - and he was bragging about
having shot and killed a Lynx (this was in central Iowa - there are
probably *very* few Lynx left there, as it is.)  I asked him *why* he
would ever shoot a Lynx...?  His response: "Yeh git fifty bucks for dem
pelts!" <mind explode>  The jerk also was laughing about shooting a
Cormorant...he didn't know what the birds were so he shot one.  IIRC
they were threatened in Iowa at the time.

Do NOT even get me started on "Exotic fur" coats. Domestic cat and Dog
fur is bad enough, but having wittnessed the effects of the illegal fur
trade of exotics first hand, my reactions would be that it's the one
thing (I very nearly did do) I would do time for.

I'm sure it's happening with all the outsourcing of clothing manufacture.  I
hate the whole "fur is back" thing, too. :(  I didn't read the article, but
I read about it before from the WWF website and HSUS, and it sickened me
greatly.
