Life after Pericles

First & foremost, many thanks to those who posted or mailed privately
messages of support and/or condolence over Peri's death. It really helps
to know that there are others who really understand and appreciate what
the newly bereaved are going through.

A special mention to CN for Sammy's moving "Tribute to Pericles" which I
will pass across the divide when I have the strength to stand at his
grave. Please advise Sammy from me that I think Peri would like her,
after say a year as a typically "royal" period of mourning, not to
further deprive herself of the benefits of at least a penfriend of the
opposite gender.
Also thanks to Tweed for the URL of Dr Addie's FIP website: I'd
investigated the more generalised info. sites already but it was good to
get to a "gold standard" source. I've also joined the Yahoo mailing
list/group on FIP: just a mere 27,500 messages to read to get up to
speed. But it was good to know immediately that my hygiene protocols
were already up to the recommended standard.

In answer to CN's kind enquiry into the state of Bandit & Snowball:

The high-risk period for them to develop the FIP mutation of the Feline
Coronavirus with which they're bound to be infected lasts another month
or so, although the chances of them developing said mutation is under 10
percent, thank goodness. In the meantime they've had to become used to
daily examinations for any signs. Luckily they seem to enjoy the extra
attention :-)

For two days after Peri's passing Bandit spent long hours in the chair
next to the one in which Peri chose to spend his last few days. Missing
him, I expect. Since then he's spent much more time with me. He &
Snowball now regularly indulge in long head-washing sessions which he
wins through experience and persistence despite having a lot more fur to
get through.

Snowball has vigorously expanded into the space made available to him,
demanding twice-daily walks in the Out. We don't go nearly as far from
home, since he has nothing like Peri's level of confidence (yet, I
daresay it'll come), but it's good to get out there, and he's equally
adept at accepting the adulation of the hoomin neighbours. A
hundred-pound-plus Leonberger d-pet leading its hoomin on a walk-past
had him speedily retreating to the In, however. Sensible fellow.

John Donne wrote in "For whom the bell tolls" that "Each man's death
diminishes me".
I'd like to expand that into "Each loved one's death diminishes us", as
I certainly have always felt that upon the loss of a pet as well as a
hoomin. Rather more so at times.
Certainly I, Bandit & Snowball have had a piece of our lives removed and
will never forget our missing companion.

Purrs to all

Good to hear from you Gordon!

We're still purring that Bandit and Snowball will be OK.

It's so good to see you posting again, Gordon. I was getting worried
about you. We will be purring hard for Bandit and Snowball to get a
clean bill of health.

It sounds like you're doing as well as can be hoped after such a
tragedy.  Many purrs that your heart will stop aching and that you can
look back fondly on the good times you all shared.

Perhaps it is "new mourning", but I feel like I am always "waiting". I am
waiting for something but I do not know what. I ran into the main vet when I
went back to the cat show today to get some of the "approved by us girls"
toys I picked up yesterday to send to my mom. She came up to me and gave me
a big hug. She is such a wonderful person. She told me that she personally
took Grant out to the crematorium and that made me feel so much better
somehow. Less like I'd abandonned him (which somehow I have felt like this
though, logically, I know I did not). It is amazing the change in dynamics
at home. Sugar is becoming practically a lap cat and is much more vocal. I
know she misses Grant, but doesn't really understand what is different.
However, the good news is, she and Pearl are developing a much different
relationship and I begin to think they may actually begin to play with each
other one day. I'm so glad it seems the other kitties have not developed
anything. I am so glad to see you posting again.

You are very welcome, Gordon.  I thought you were still on a dial-up
connection and it can cost quite a lot to search the Internet, as I remember
well :-(
Now I am lucky enough to have broadband since last September, so I can
easily search the Internet any day, every day, any time, for what I want,
for only the monthly subscription which is less than I paid out in dial-up
charges.  If you would like me to find anything else on it, and post the
URL, just say.  It costs me nothing.

Many purrs that they will escape it.  The odds sound good.

I don't know how cats grieve or even if they do. Kitty & Boyfriend are the
first cats I've ever had and they are both still here.

With my dogs:  I think I was mainly the one that grieved about their loss.
I had six dogs in the house.  A mother whippet, Mink, four of her puppies,
Logan, Daisy, Havoc and Jolly, and a cousin of them, Susan and my lurcher,
Trim.
They all got elderly except Susan, who I rescued from a bad home.  She died
aged 10.
Havoc & Daisy, being litter sisters were almost like one entity, they'd been
together since birth.   Daisy got CRF aged 14 and passed away (at the vet's
of course, you know what I mean).  I thought Havie would be devastated. Not
so.  She never looked for Daisy nor showed any signs that she was aware that
she was gone.
Neither did Havoc's brother Logan show any signs that he missed her (bear in
mind he was now the only whippet left then) when she went to RB because of a
bleeding tumour on her spleen, and at 17 TED said it was too risky to
operate.

I don't know if animals just live from day to day, accepting what happens on
that day, or are able to think about the past.
In the sense that we, humans, can think back over years and years, I'm sure
they can't.
Otherwise, Logan and Havoc would have been devastated and looking for their
sister.  They weren't.  A while later, Logan should have searched the house
for Havoc, his only remaining companion.
He didn't.
So I don't know what to think about whether pets miss each other or not.

Tks for the offer, but luckily I'm on unmetered dialup access so it's
the time rather than the money that's the problem. But I'm now laden
with FIP info and might even start fundraising for more research into
FIP once my existing commitments allow.

Gordon, so glad to see you're up to coming back, even if it is in "lurkmode"
for a while.  Purrs of comfort still on the way for your loss and purrs of
continued good health for Bandit and Snowball.

Gordon, I'm glad to see your post.  Will keep purrs and  purrayers coming
that Bandit and Snowball stay in the clear. Thinking of you.

I'm glad to read that Bandit and Snowball are okay, and glad to see you
posting.  It's good to know you're still with the group, even if only
lurking.

Purrs and healthy wishes for Bandit and Snowball to be FIP free.  May
your memories of Pericles become gentle and loving.  He adored you,
Bandit, and Pericles, and had one of the best lives a cat could ask for.
