Purrs for a real cat lady

Hi All,

It's been a hectic day since about 11AM.  That's when DH went over to
my neighbor Doris' place and discovered her on the floor in the
hallway with a broken leg.  She had lain there since 5:00 in the
morning, unable to reach either a telephone, the walkie-talkie, or the
alarm bell that we have between our homes.  Doris is one generation
older than DH and I are and since her husband passed about a year and
a half ago, we've sort of watched out for her, checked if she needed
anything from the market, etc..

I wrote about Doris and Tootie, her cat that goes on daily walks with
her (well not for a while I guess) and some of you may remember my
description of Tootie.  She looks like a pretty  gray cat that went
wading in white paint just up to her belly.

Dorrie is going to need surgery before the leg can even be set, so
she'll be in the hospital for a while.  Cat sitting time for Lynda and
O J.  What I don't understand is why Doris' cats are so socialized to
her and were to her husband, but won't let a stranger near them.  I
guess we'll see if that changes now that we'll be feeding Tootie and
Meyer.

Any purrs you can send Doris will be printed out and brought to her in
the hospital and I just know she'll get a kick out of cat people from
all over the world wishing her well.

Thanking you in advance for the support I know you'll show her,

Regards and Purrs,
O J

Many purrs for her (and for you and DH for watching out for her!)  A broken
leg is no fun at all!  Poor Dorrie!  Take good care of her kitties and
continued purrs for her recovery.

How terrible. Many purrs coming over for Doris and her cats. At least

Hi All,

It's a miracle!  I got to pet Tootie and Meyer for the first time
today even though they  have been Doris' cats for the years we've been
neighbors and friends.  It's amazing how friendly the sound of a cat
food lid opening will make a kitty.

Doris was in surgery when I just called at noon California time. She
needs some pins put in her leg before the bones can be set with a
splint.  With any luck, we may be able to visit her this afternoon.

I've been copying and pasting everyone's purrs to a text file and
cross-referencing it with everyone's location from the recent thread
on where we all live.  I just know she'll get the biggest lift from
hearing that cat lovers all over the world will have their kitties
sending her their best get-well purrs.

Thanks for the purrs and please keep them coming!

Will certainly purr for the Cat Lady.  Will also send my sympathy because
I have "been there-- done that"   I was in the hospital 3 days for the pin
job then another 10 in rehab.   The methods that are used now are much
improved since I had it done.  A kind neighbor and his retarded adult son
took care of my cat.  Best wishes to all.   MLB

She has a button that will  remotely ring our doorbell.  If we answer
the door and no one's there, we'd go over to check Doris.  She must
have left it on her nightstand.  You're right though, a pendant would
have been with her and not at her bedside.

Purrs and healing thoughts for Dorrie and her owners Tootie and Meyer.
It's scary to be hurt or have some one you love be hurt and not be able
to be with them.  Can you arrange to take the cats to visit after they
get her settled?

After being friends and neighbors of Doris for a dozen years, I petted
both Tootie and Meyer for the first time today, as they got very
friendly when they realized that I was visiting this morning to give
them their gooshy food.

I think that trying to have a relative stranger transport them would
stress them too much even if the hospital was one of the progressive
ones that would allow it.  Doris will just have to be content with
knowing that real cat lovers are looking after her babies.

I'll be going back this afternoon to spend some play time if they feel
like it.  Otherwise I'll just  sit, watch TV, and keep them company
for  a bit.

You might consider a video phone, or even an audio one. A surprisingly
large number of cats will recognize their hoomins over the phone.

I know that my voice over the answering machine when I still worked
fascinated the kitties who would all listen for their names.  When I
called and DH was unavailable I made sure to call out each of their
names in turn and tell them that daddy loved them.

I think Doris has an answering machine.  I'll mention to her that she
might want to call and let them hear her voice.

Doris is still in recovery  as I write this.  I think I'll grab a few
cat toys , go pay her little critters a visit, and spend a little time
with them.

IMHO the cat will do best at home.  I have been through this three times
and Princess (RB 16) did just fine with the care she got from neighbors
and family.  On the other hand, prior to my experiences, another neighbor
fell in the house and broke her leg.  I took care of her cat with two
daily visits.  She was in rehab for a very long time (she just wouldn't
try).  Her daughter took BaBe to visit her -- the cat was terrified and
hid under the hospital bed.  The visit was a disaster.

A lot of cats with stay-at-home parents get this way.  My cat Peewee is

I'm so glad she has you to look out for her and help her in times like
these!  You are a great neighbor!

Hope Doris is feeling better soon - that her stay in the hospital is
short - and that the leg heals quickly, and well.

Hi All,

Thank you all for your show of support for Doris.  DH went over to
give Tootie and Meyer their morning ration of gooshy food and we just
got off the phone with Doris.  Doris came through the operation OK.
That's a big relief since any time you give an 80 year old person
general anesthesia there's a risk.  We'll be going over to see her
later.

I've made up a big text file with everyone's responses and good
wishes, and cross-referenced it with the thread about where everyone
is from.  I'm going to print it and bring it to the hospital with us
so she'll know that people all over the world are having their kitties
purr for her recovery.  I know it'll be better than any get-well card
she could get from DH and me.

The change in Tootie's and Meyer's behavior is striking.  They now
like to get chin and ear skritches from their Uncle O  J and even
played some string games with me yesterday.  I brought over one of
those track-ball toys so they can bat the ball around the circle.

Again, thanks from Lynda and me for your support.  If I might ask,
please keep those purrs coming as I'll be printing out all the purr
notices for her to read.  Maybe she'll like the idea of a kitty
newsgroup enough to get a computer herself.  You may not be able to
teach an old d*g new tricks, but kitties and kitty people are
different.

Regards and Purrs,

Sending her our very best purrayers for a quick recovery...
and it's amazing how fast a kitties attitude can change when they
realise that you are the Bearer of Gooshy Food and the only one who'll
be there to skritch their heads for awhile... I'm glad they'll accept
the attention from you :)

I couldn't agree more.  I live in an area where most of my neighbors
are over 55.  I've never seen one get a computer and not get caught up
in it.  The only complaint DH and I have had is that we needed to
discourage a few of our friends from forwarding us items that have
been forwarded to them.  I'm sure we all know the type.  They need
to find a good newsgroup and write their own stuff instead of just
passing on quasi-interesting articles.

Thank you, and my thanks to all of you who wrote to send purrs and
express your support.  Lynda made up a cover with  pictures of Tootie
and Meyer and when I brought the stapled package to the hospital,
Doris came to tears as I read  the follow-up articles sending purrs
her way.

Good news!  She was up and walking with a walker for a little bit
today and will probably come home tomorrow.  She's arranging for
someone to stay 24/7 at her place for room and board plus a small
salary.  The kitties will surely be glad to see their meowmie again.
It'll be interesting to see if Tootie and Meyer stay as friendly as
they were when I was the supplier of gooshy food.

Regards and Thanks,
