Little Camera Hog!

I was videotaping myself doing my yoga so I could see if I was doing it
correctly according to the DVD I'd bought.  I didn't notice, until I looked
at the mpeg file, just how often Jessie came into camera range (sort of how,
when I took photos of my house, Jessie managed to be in so many shots).  I
think she was Cindy Crawford in a former life!  ;>

or

for those who can't see the page with the embedded video.

BTW, from those who do yoga - does it look like I'm doing it right???

ROFL!! It's like everytime you looked away she came back into frame. Say, I
think your form looks very very good!

Thanks, I've only been doing it about 4 - 6 weeks, so I'm still not that
limber, but I'm getting there!

Jessie is just a trip.  She *loves* the camera and always manages to get
herself into the picture!!  Fortunately she's very photogenic!!!!  ;>

Dang!  What operating system are you using?  Do you have Windows Media
Player?  An mpeg should play OK on that.  I could make it into an avi file,
but then it's too big to download!

Windows XP Home Edition and yes, I have Windows Media Player.  The player
launches and it tells me it's downloaded and connecting to the site but I
never see anything.

Try this: right click on the second link and select "save link as". Save
the file on your desktop (or any other easy to find placae). Once it's
saved, just open it with the media player. It might work.

Thanks Mary - I try, but it's hard to get these 53-year-old bones and
muscles to do what I want them to do!!!

Jessie is *always* there when you have a camera in hand.  She thinks there
is nothing else on earth anyone would want to photograph but her!!

You look quite fit and supple, good for you! If it is genetics and not
hard work, you don't have to tell! ;)

She is beautiful. I loved the way she was rubbing her face all over the
shelving unit (?) she was standing on. She actually looked at the camera
at one point, but mostly she was keeping an eye on Mama! Cheeky does
this. She likes to lurk around wherever I am. I don't know she is there
at times, until I get up and she darts in front of me. She has sneaky
ways from her feral days, I think.

Definitely genetics - my grandmother danced with the band leader on her
100th birthday!  My mom is 79 and goes line dancing twice a week and is a
member of a bowling league (with a 165 average!!).

That was my dining table and chairs - the little witch!  [Ask Bonbon or
Bridget how well they listen when I tell them to get down!!  Sammy simply
laid down up there and started grooming.  If you have the sound turned up
you can hear me yelling at Sammy for using my couch as a scratching post -
even though there's a scratching post standing 2 feet away!!!]

I had a feeling it was more than just good habits! I'm not surprised that
your
Mom took good care of herself too. Nature AND nurture is at play here.

PS Maybe she is a natural model!  The photographer, William Wegman,
the one who does those famous portraits of his Weimaraner dogs, has
said that he began photographing the dogs because the first dog, Man
Ray, was fascinated by the camera and the setups he would create to
photograph, and always get into the middle of them.  Wegman  decided
it was easier to photograph the dog.

The Seated Forward Bend Yoga Posture or the Paschimothanasana looks deceptively simple, but it is
in fact a very important and demanding Yoga Pose. The Sanskrit word "paschima" means "the West",
referring to the back of the body which is literally stretched from the heels to the top of the
spine. Practicing this Asana invigorates the internal organs, reduces fat, and stimulates the
entire Nervous System. Before holding the pose, loosen up your body by inhaling and coming back out
of the Yoga Position; then, exhaling go into it again. Repeat this three times. Don't try to bring
your head to your knees as this will curve the spine. Aim to bring the torso instead, while keeping
the knees and spine straight. [You are definitely curving your spine.]

This is similar to your beginning pose in the tape, except here the legs are together but it's the
same idea. The small of the back should be flat, not curved. If anything, slightly concave although
that may be stretching it a bit. Your back is curving because you are bending from the middle of
the spine to do what you see in the video. This is definitely a beginner's mistake.

http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/yogapractice/theforwardbend.asp
"Pulling the abdomen in, exhale and fold forward from the pelvis, leading with the chest and
keeping your back straight. Bring your chin toward your shins and your chest toward your thighs.
Don't bend from the middle of your spine. "

My feeling is that you are trying to do it too much and finish the pose. This can lead to injury.

For example, you are definitely bending from the middle of your spine in the beginning where you
spread your legs and bend forward while seated on the ground. For me, this would be a big-time
no-no, although we all do it. But it's much better to grasp only half-way at your knees instead of
your ankles and do the pose properly than the cheating by bending from the middle of the spine.

There's no rush to doing yoga. Better to do a little and maintain proper posture than try to
complete too soon what you see in the video. The rounding of the back, depending on your own back,
is a very common mistake and one that can place great stress on the back. But if you have been
doing this for two months and feel fine, who am I to say anything? You might want to float this by
a good yoga teacher. Maybe some web site or someone in your area and ask how you are doing. I am
not a yoga teacher although I have taken yoga courses in different styles over the years.

Your cat's pose is excellent :)

Yeah, that's how it looked to me too - but it doesn't feel that way when I'm
doing it.  One of the problems I'm havingis that my stomach is too big to
let me lean over correctly!

I started doing this at the end of January.  I was diagnosed as having
degenerative disk disease and physical therapy wasn't working for me, so I
decided to try yoga and strength exercises like curnches to strengthen and
stretch the muscles supporting the disks (L5 - S1).

I finally found a yoga class nearby and they're having free lessons all next
week.  The teacher/owner  herself had disk problems and used yoga to correct
them, so I'm hoping she can help me.  It's hard to try to learn yoga from a
DVD because you don't have any feedback on what you're doing wrong.  There's
even several ways to do the *same* pose that are wrong even when they look
right because you're not using the right muscles!

> Your cat's pose is excellent :)

Yep, they make me sick with the ease in which they accomplish the poses the
very bendy teacher does!!!  ;>

One of the benefits of yoga is that as you get better in yoga
the stomach gets smaller, very mysteriously. The smaller
the tummy, the easier it is to bend with a truly straight back.

If you really kept your back straight, even slightly concave,
that is, the curve in the small of your back, you might find
you can't bend forward far enough to get your tummy in the way.
Don't know. This depends on the flexibility of your hamstrings.
If you had a back problem, often the hamstrings are too tight.
But if you can bend down easily, this is not the case with you.
This is why the orthoquacks will ask someone with a bad back
to bend down, to gauge the stretch of the hamstrings.

The immovable object meets the moveable object. Mechanically,
these two joints need to be redesigned for humans. Crunches
will harden the tummy muscles for sure. Back muscles may need
work but it's so easy to re-injure the back, especially with back
crunches that I would not recommend doing it unless with expert
supervision. Generally don't hyperextend the back, that is bend
backwards [cobra pose in yoga] unless you really are sure
and at peace with your back. It's not an easy call here.
Go gently for this will definitely put pressure on L5-S1.
No doubt about it.

Have you seen a physical therapist? Did you get a big beach
ball to sit on and do back exercises?

That's so true. I noticed one of your poses when you were bending to the right
seemed outwardly okay, but I felt inwardly you maybe were not using the
correct muscles. It seems too stiff on the video to be correct, but as long as
you don't injure yourself... A yoga teacher can tell by putting hands on the muscles
and then seeing if the correct muscles are tense and so forth. Generally
though yoga teachers won't physically touch the students. But since the poses
are static, you don't need to touch if you can look carefully.

Taping yourself is a great idea to see how you are doing.
Classes can be helpful because they can keep you motivated,
especially if you have to pay in advance ;)

A yoga teacher who has the same injury is the way to go, for sure.
That sounds great!
