Help with kitten .avi?

When I visited my niece's kittens some time ago, I managed to shoot a
short .avi clip of the kittens playing with their trackball. The problem
is, the movie is very dark and grainy. You can see movement and if you
know there are kittens playing there, you can see them. Now, I don't
have any software to improve the quality of the film. I'd want to make
it lighter at least. Can anyone give me some advice or point me to some
open source software? I don't think I'll be shooting so many films that
it would be worth it to invest in the software to process them.

IIRC Irfaview can handle .avi-files too. Haven't used it for that tho,
so no help there. But trial and error could do lots, as long as you
don't save the changes onto the original file.

Another program for editing video is Magix Movie Edit Silver, but I
haven't tried that one either - got no videos to edit. This program was
featured in the local pc-mag Kotimikro 17/2004 and is said to be a free
program. Dang, it doesn't seem to be available at their home page
www.magix.com, only on the CD that came with the magazine.
