CatNipped - 25 Feb 2005 12:23 GMT My 15-year-old is going in for a teeth cleaning today. I know that doesn't sound serious, but any time an older cat has to be anesthetized is worrisome. I'll be a wreck until she's home again!
Hugs,
CatNipped

I know the feeling, too. Harri is at the vet this morning getting spayed, and I am going to be a nervous wreck until I get her home. I also have to take Sammy in for treatment of an upper respiratory infection.

MLB Yep, already asked, they use isoflurine (sp??). It "metabolizes" (?) faster and lets them come out of it faster.

Howard Berkowitz - 27 Feb 2005 15:55 GMT > > f they use an up-to-day anesthetic he should be fine. The first time I > > had Princess's [quoted text clipped - 11 lines] > > CatNipped Isoflurane. Modern anesthesia, however, is "balanced" with a combination of several drugs, both anesthetic and preanesthetic. While an inhaled anesthetic such as isoflurane gives deep surgical anesthesia and minimal depression of other body functions, actually inhaling it while conscious can be unpleasant.
So, the usual practice is to pre-sedate (e.g., with a benzodiazepine tranquilizer) and/or to do quick initial induction of unconsciousness (or a total "don't care" condition) with ultrashort-acting barbiturates or ketamine. After the patient is asleep, the inhaled anesthetic, mixed with oxygen and sometimes nitrous oxide, are started. Toward the end of surgery, the primary inhaled anesthetic may be stopped so it can clear out, but fast-clearing nitrous oxide is continued for pain control in the sedated patient. In recovery, one waits for basic awakening, but continues pain medication, waiting for the patient to be completely awake.

The original insight into the protective effect of fluoride came from an observation that residents of Deaf Smith County, Texas, had extremely low cavity rates -- and unusual water.

The original insight [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > > CatNipped Genetics - go figure. I've got extremely good teeth (even though I did have cavities as a kid and I think I have one now). But father, who is 80, has most of his natural teeth. My oldest brother, Paul, has good teeth too. My mom had a full set of dentures before she was 50. My middle brother, Scott, poor thing, got Mom's genetics - very bad teeth and gum disease. He was always brushing and flossing and rinsing and doing all the stuff you're supposed to do but he suffered major bone loss in his jaw too. So several years ago he had ALL of his teeth replaced with implants. He had to first have bone implants in his jaw. The entire process took just over a year and it wasn't covered by insurance. He has a $33,000 mouth! He borrowed against his 401K and took out a loan and my dad sent him $$ too. Me, I drove him to and from the oral surgeon and cooked him soft food like mac & cheese, breakfast casserole, soups, etc.
