My 15-year-old is going in for a teeth cleaning today.  I know that doesn't
sound serious, but any time an older cat has to be anesthetized is
worrisome.  I'll be a wreck until she's home again!

Hugs,

I think it is always scary and nerve wracking, especially at 15. Mega purrs
coming.

Yes, unfortunately you will in spite of what anyone can say.  Just
take a few deep breaths and tell yourself that it's only a routine
procedure.

Sorry I'm coming late to this. Many purrs for Bandit. I know exactly
what you're going through, as my 17-year-old Frank has problems with his
teeth, too.

I know the feeling, too. Harri is at the vet this morning getting
spayed, and I am going to be a nervous wreck until I get her home. I
also have to take Sammy in for treatment of an upper respiratory infection.

Sending purrs for Harri that she will be fine.  I hope you keep them apart
so she won't catch the cold.   Remember to do "scent transfer" when they
meet again.  Purrs for both of them.   MLB

Awww, poor Harri - purrs on the way that her procedure goes smoothly and
that recovery is quick.  Purrs for Sammy as well. URI's aren't any fun
at all and Sam sends special, deep breathing purrs as well.  Gentle
headbutts to you and Nancy as well.

f they use an up-to-day anesthetic he should be fine.  The first time I
had Princess's
rb16) teeth cleaned, I was really upset with the doctor (told him so) and
it took her a couple of days to recover.  The next time I went to a new
doctor and he said they used the same anesthetic as is used on people.
She was just fine.  Purrs that all goes well.   MLB

Yep, already asked, they use isoflurine (sp??).  It "metabolizes" (?) faster
and lets them come out of it faster.

Isoflurane.  Modern anesthesia, however, is "balanced" with a
combination of several drugs, both anesthetic and preanesthetic. While
an inhaled anesthetic such as isoflurane gives deep surgical anesthesia
and minimal depression of other body functions, actually inhaling it
while conscious can be unpleasant.

So, the usual practice is to pre-sedate (e.g., with a benzodiazepine
tranquilizer) and/or to do quick initial induction of unconsciousness
(or a total "don't care" condition) with ultrashort-acting barbiturates
or ketamine.  After the patient is asleep, the inhaled anesthetic, mixed
with oxygen and sometimes nitrous oxide, are started. Toward the end of
surgery, the primary inhaled anesthetic may be stopped so it can clear
out, but fast-clearing nitrous oxide is continued for pain control in
the sedated patient.  In recovery, one waits for basic awakening, but
continues pain medication, waiting for the patient to be completely
awake.

No, she's never had a cavity - just like my barekids.  Can you imaging
making it to 33 (my daughter) and 32 (my son) without having a single
cavity?

My maternsl grandfather never had a cavity.  He did, however, have one
pulled when he was about 75.  It was so rare here that it rated a story in
the newspaper.    Also, my ex-boss who was a few years older than I never
had a cavity/   MLB

If they were all in the same geographic area, do you know if the water
has a high natural level of fluoride?  The original insight into the
protective effect of fluoride came from an observation that residents of
Deaf Smith County, Texas, had extremely low cavity rates -- and unusual
water.

In our case I think it was genetics.  All my kids' friends had cavities.

Genetics - go figure.  I've got extremely good teeth (even though I did have
cavities as a kid and I think I have one now).  But father, who is 80, has
most of his natural teeth.  My oldest brother, Paul, has good teeth too.  My
mom had a full set of dentures before she was 50.  My middle brother, Scott,
poor thing, got Mom's genetics - very bad teeth and gum disease.  He was
always brushing and flossing and rinsing and doing all the stuff you're
supposed to do but he suffered major bone loss in his jaw too.  So several
years ago he had ALL of his teeth replaced with implants.  He had to first
have bone implants in his jaw.  The entire process took just over a year and
it wasn't covered by insurance.  He has a $33,000 mouth!  He borrowed
against his 401K and took out a loan and my dad sent him $$ too.  Me, I
drove him to and from the oral surgeon and cooked him soft food like mac &
cheese, breakfast casserole, soups, etc.
