Snake!

badwilson - 25 Feb 2005 02:16 GMT There's this snake that's been coming over the wall behind our house. The wall is about 10 feet high and behind it is an empty field with half built and abandoned houses where water buffalos graze. The snake has been basking on the top of the wall and every time it is visible, the neighbour's dog barks up a storm and the birds make this weird twittering noise. The snake is about 6 feet long and kind of fat, a dark colour. Shudder. A few days ago, Dennis got some gardener people to cut down all the branches of the trees that touch the house and also to cut down the shrubs on the other side of the wall that would allow the snake to get up there. Things seemed good for a while. Right now, the neighbour's dog is barking up a storm and the birds are twittering. I can't see the snake anywhere, but still, I am not going outside today!!! -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! blove - 25 Feb 2005 03:48 GMT Any pattern on the snake? where are you located? Is there any wildlife people like the local DEC or Forest Ranger u can call to catch it and relocate it? Just treat it with respect and dont let ur pets outside without supervision and it wont bother you. DO NOT kill it. Snakes are more afraid of you and will hightail it out of there at the slightest vibration from your foot steps.

Where do you live? Cutting trees away from the wall won't help - snakes can climb a wall with no problem. If you kill it you will have a *flood* of mice and rats/other rodents in your property.
If you can get a closer look, or a digital pic, let me know - I can probably ID it for you.

I am going to stay inside with Vino and wait for one of the neighbours to kill it, hee hee! Being in Thailand, I'm going to assume it's poisonous and avoid it. There are tons of snakes around here, it's quite creepy. About rats, we already have that problem but fortunately they are contained to the under the sink area. Caught a few in a trap and they go away for a while but then come back after a few months. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! I have always wanted a Taiwanese Beauty snake.
>There are tons of snakes > around here, it's quite creepy. Hee - that's a matter of opinion! I love seeing snakes in the wild.

Big snakes (like you described) will kill 4-6 rats a month, sometimes more.
Let's just hope this guy isn't poisonous. If you get a picture of him, let me know - I still may be able to ID him for you. :)

Thankfully they seem to only be able to get in from under the sink and are contained in that one kitchen cabinet, and I'd never leave it open because that would expose the rest of the house to them, making my problem much bigger. Also, I'm assuming they are dirty and carry diseases and I don't want Vino even touching a dirty nasty rat. Also, these rats are huge and I'm sure Vino would be scared of them. They are about 1/3 of the size of him! Eeeek! -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! > sure Vino would be scared of them. They are about 1/3 of the size of > him! Eeeek! > Britta Perhaps the rats are why the snake is lurking about. Maybe if you put some bait in the yard, the rats would go after it and the snake would then go after the rats. Or, the word might get out and you'd just have even more rats, all well-fed and plump. I think you're right to keep Vine away from them. I suppose that if there is some way to block that gap under the sink that you would have done it long ago. Annie

First thing I did was have the landlord install new kitchen cabinets. But the landlord lives in Bangkok so he sent this ridiculous work crew of crooked handymen who proceeded to put in a new countertop (which now looks like a 6 year old installed it) and then only nailed a 1/8 inch thick piece of some flimsy wood over the bottom of the inside under the sink. Then they left and I complained to the landlord and he assured me that he would never use those men again, but did nothing more about the cabinets. I stuffed steel wool into any cracks and crevices I could find, but the rats still got in somehow. Then I tried to find rat traps, the spring loaded kind. Looked all over town but couldn't find any. I was leary of poison because I didn't want rats dying inside the entry hole and rotting and stinking up the place, so against my better judgement, I put down a glue trap. Caught 2 by the next morning but was emotionally traumatized when I saw them twitching on the trap. Decided to never do that again. Put down some poison as a preventative and had no rats for a few months. Recently the rats came back. Luckily Dennis was here and I passed the problem on to him. He managed to find the spring loaded traps but the rats kept eating the bait without setting the trap off! Finally one got caught but only by the leg and Dennis had to kill it by dropping a brick on it. It was flat as a pancake and I'm a little traumatized by that as well :-( Now Dennis has left and I'm disinclined to do anything about it because I know it's going to be horrible. I'm thinking of just putting down poison again. Vino can't get into the kitchen cabinets, so I'm not worried about him. I'm thinking the rat wouldn't die instantly after eating it anyway, it would probably eat it and leave and die somewhere outside. I just need something where I don't have to see or deal with the dead rats! The one other thing I'm a bit worried about is that if the rats can get in, then couldn't the snake get in too? I've gotten into the habit of kicking the kitchen cabinet before opening it to chase anything that might be in there away. Luckily, I haven't heard anything for a few days. I have a friend who's a herpetologist, so if you can get a pic of it, and need help with ID, I can see what I can do.
Probably just as well to assume it's venomous...better safe than sorry.

Gabey8 - 26 Feb 2005 21:29 GMT I hope that whatever the snake is interested in goes away, so the snake will, also.
I know they're good and they control the number of pests like rats, mice, etc. But here's to seeing the pests go away and take the snake with them.
It's stories like this that make me remember a post you send a few years ago, when Vino had a "girlfriend". There was an outdoor kitty who was hanging around your door, which drove Vino crazy with jealousy. Hearing about a 6-foot snake in the area makes me wonder how that little cat is faring, along with any other outdoor kitties that might live nearby.
I'm glad Vino's an indoor cat. If I lived anywhere that snakes that large could be found, I'd be afraid to ever have a pet outdoors without direct human supervision. (Heck, I DON'T live around snakes that size and I keep the cats indoors.)

[quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > Donna and the cats who won't meet ANY sort of reptile, if I can help > it: Captain and Stanley Ah, Spot! Yeah, she's still around. I see this teenage boy a few houses down petting her in the driveway, so I think she belongs with those people. Thais don't usually keep indoor pets so there are a ton of cats and dogs roaming around this neighbourhood. I'm sure they all think I'm nuts for keeping Vino inside but I'd never let him out here. Spot still comes to the house and annoys Vino. She goes through phases of interest and disinterest. One time she climbed up the side of the house and clung onto our screen window, yowling obscenities! I usually leave them be but if she gets Vino too upset, I chase her away. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur!
