Not long ago, somebody started a "What do you do for a living?" thread.
That was real interesting. I'm a relative newcomer, and I haven't fixed
in my mind where everybody lives.

What country/state do you live in? Is that where you're originally
from?

I live in Pennsylvania, USA. I've moved around a lot in PA, but almost
always lived in this state.

Hi Katz,

I started in Imperial Beach (South of San Diego), California...  Lived
in Oregon, lived in Alabama, lived in Maine, lived in the Air Force
(overseas mostly), currently live in Colorado.

I'm originally from Woburn, Massachusetts, which is 12 miles northwest of
Boston.  Moved to St. Cloud, Florida, which is about 15 miles east of
Orlando, in 1988.

Whereabouts in Colorado? Monique and I also live in Colorado, she is
Longmont and me on the plains between Limon and Colo. Spgs. My house
is an old homestead house and is surrounded by old trees and a
spring=fed pond, which is worth its weight in gold in the middle of
the dry prairie.

I'm in Geneseo, Illinois--the Land That Modernity Forgot...or, perhaps
more accurately, the Land That Forgot Modernity. I grew up here as well,
but was born in nearby Rock Island. (Well, hey, it's not like I had any
say in the matter.)

Ooh, so sorry, missed this.  I've been away for a day or two, and
hadn't seen this one.  I'm on the Western Slope (near Grand Junction).

I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I was born in London, England
but moved to Sacramento, CA early on. Then we moved around
a lot. I spent more of my childhood in Washington, DC than anywhere
else, but I have lived in several major US cities. I find Raleigh to be like
a big suburb.

I live in Portland, OR.  I have lived pretty much all over the US (and
in CAN, as a kid) with the exception of the deep south.  I grew up in
Illinois, about 50 miles south of Chicago.

As for places to live, I prefer the (non-SF Bay) West coast to just
about anywhere else except Hawaii. ;)

I live in the USA. I grew up in Whitehouse, Ohio and moved to State
College, PA when I was twenty.  After living in State College for 9
years I moved to Cary, NC which is right next to Raleigh.  I lived there
for eleven years and then moved to the Washington, DC area last year.
Who knows how long we will stay here.  I've lived all those places but
my heart belongs to Marquette, MI where we vacation.

I lived in Cary, too.  Beautiful part of the country but I HATED living
there - too xenophobic for me.  I lived close to a really nice park
just south of the airport - I forget what it was called.  Awesome
wildlife there.

Great to see the USA has named a town after The Yowlet ;-)

Originally from Born in Rochester, UK, For the first 4 years of my life I
lived in South-End-On-Sea in England. In 1975 my parents decided to
immigrate to Australia, bringing myself and my younger sister with them.
Since then, I have always lived within a half-hour drive of Wollongong, NSW
(which is about an hour and a half south of Sydney). There are many places
in Australia I"ve fallen in love with, but my heart and home will always be
in the Illawarra.

Is that Rochester as in Medway Towns, or Rochester, Northumberland?

I now live in Whitstable on the North Kent coast, but started life in
Maidstone (also in Kent, but very central), moving to Hythe when I was
14 (South Kent coast).  A brief spell in Ramsgate (East Kent) in my late
twenties, then Whitstable, where I've been for almost ten years now.

My UK geography is terrible. Whichever one is closer to South-end-on-Sea
(I'm now wonderign whether it was Rochester or another town starting with
"R" - its not like I have a memory of where I was born, my parents moved
back to Southend before I was one)

Rochester, Kent isn't that far as the crow flies from Sarfend - Sarfend
is on the Essex coast, and the two counties are on either side of the
Thames Estuary.  So, sounds like you're from the Kentish Rochester.
Which led me to wonder ..... is Yowie entitled to call herself a Kentish
Woman, or a Woman of Kent?

Looks like you're Of Kent.  BTW, Kent is at the bottom right hand corner
of England, underneath and to the right of London!

I know... bad form for replying to myself, but I just have to brag about my
home-town Wollongong.

There are two major 'eating' places in Wollongong. One is Cliff Road, Stuart
Park and surrounds, they all lookout over the ocean, lagoon or harbour.
Great food with 'silver service' but you pay for it. This is where the
tourists tend to eat, and where you'd go on your anniversary. The other is
Keira Street, in the middle of twon. These are cheap eats where the locals
go, and where I ate at the Singaporean restaurant on Friday night. Cary was
with me, and he yet again confirmed his vegetarianess by enjoying
Singaporean curry, which is quite spicy. It was tofu, pototoes and other
asian vegies in a something akin to a Thai red curry, but with its own twist
to it. Yummy.

And then, having not much else better to do on a friday night, I decided to
take Cary for walk along Keira street to see what sort of restaurants have
sprung up since I was last in town. Here's the list of cuisines represented
on that one street, and except for the french restaurant, I would be deeply
shocked to find a main course over $20.

Vietnamese
Cambodian
Singaporean
Japanese
Japanese Sushi bar
Korean
Chinese
Anglo-style 'Chinese'
Yum Cha
Asian noodle bar
Thai
Indian
Mexican
Italian
Iranian
French
Turkish
Lebanese
Australian
Pizzeria
Kebab house
Tea Emporium
Espresso bar

There's also a Greek place in town and a Japanese BBQ place but they are on
a different street (with other restaurant types already listed above) as
well as the usual franchise steakhouses (Chillis, LoneStar and Hogsbreath)
and fast food franchises (McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Subway etc etc)
scattered throughout the place.

I am *so* glad I live in (the out suburbs of) an International University
town.

Maybe Lake Crabtree Park?  In the last 5 years or so we lived there,
Cary had become more diverse.  We had a lot of people from Taiwan and
Viet Nam settle in Cary as well as a huge influx of Latinos.  The town
decided to take a proactive, progressive approach and welcome the new
comers with help in their native language as well as trying to keep some
affordable housing so things may have gotten better since you lived
there.  The town also had their 2 pet limit law struck down.

They still make fun of the town because it has a pretty strict zoning
ordinance and still dictate what color roofs can be.  They still say
Cary stands for Containment Area Relocated Yankees.  :-)

Yes!  I loved that park - great off-road cycling trails.   And an
abundance of birds - blue heron, snowy egrets, etc.

Yes, I have heard it as "Containment Area.." :)   I was recruited by a
firm to come and head a research project in RTP.  I pretty much hated
the company and the area and moved to the SF Bay area after a year and
a half.  I met my DH there, though (he was a grad student at NCSU) so
all was not lost. ;)

Ooooh! Leven, Fife!  I was born not far from there -- in Buckhaven,
Fife. We lived for a few years in Albany Park (near Sidcup) in Kent --
I remember going to a sea-side that I think was Ramsgate.
Then we emigrated to Toronto, Canada, and then Montreal. When I fledged
my wings from the family, I moved to London England, then Winnipeg, and
then back to Toronto, where I am now.

Currently living in Bloomington, Indiana (former home of Bobby Knight,
current home of John "Cougar" Mellencamp, birthplace of David Lee Roth
(former Van Halen front-man), and home to missing IU student Jill Berhman
whose body was found last year in a field a county north, but no killers
have been found yet).

I was born in Izmir, Turkey to US Air Force dad & stay-at-home mom, and
lived in Germany, California, Texas, Mississippi, & Oklahoma before I was 5
years old.  Then dad retired from the AF & got a civvy job at Crane (a
land-locked Navy base here in Indiana) repair electronic communications
equipment, and we moved to Bedford, Indiana: Limestone Capital of the
World - limestone was used in Pentegon, Empire State Building, countless
memorials, statues & monuments in Wahsington DC (including the Washington
Crossing the Deleware statue, of which I have a piece that came off the
block used to carve it) & elsewhere: and home to *3* astronauts: Walker,
Grissom & Bowersox (I lived 3 houses up the street from him when I was a
kid). http://www.limestonecountry.com/Home.html

We didn't have pets as a kid, aside from hamsters, so now I'm making up for
lost time with *8* cats ;)

Wow, there are quite a few military people in this group.

Add me to the mix.  I was born in a small town in Upstate New York, south of
the Finger Lakes, I went to school in Ithaca for 4 years, then went to grad
school at PennState, State College, PA (loved it!), lived in Greenville, NC,
moved back to NY and lived in the Poughkeepsie/Wappingers Falls area for 3
years (miss the gorgeous autumns), *then* I lived in Germany for 5 years
while working as a contractor with the military, *then* I married an AF guy
(with Willow's approval), and we moved to the UK.  Now we are expecting to
move this summer stateside...hopefully NoVa.  Willow joined me in
Poughkeepsie.

Not that I can recall.  Jill was a brunette, and was riding her when she
disappeared.  A week after her disappearance, they did find her bike, but no
sign of her.  They do have a couple of suspects in mind, but not enough to
charge/arrest them  for her murder (aparently they are already imprisoned
for other infractions).

I live in Longmont, Colorado, but prefer to think of myself as living in
Boulder, which is culturally more my style but which I can't afford.

I was born and raised in northern Virginia (DC suburbs) except for a 5-year

Toronto Canada born and raised. Still here. Well, technically I'm in "the
former Municipality of Scarborough", the nearest suburb east of Tranna along
the Scarborough Bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario. A lot of Scarborough is
dreary strip malls and high-rises, hence the nickname "Scarberia", but we're
in an old house in an old neighbourhood near the lake - it feels more like a
small town than part of a big metropolis.

Hi Katz. I'm in Maryland (USA) and have only lived in roughly four
towns here. I'm a "stay put" sort of person, and since I was a mom
young, I never had a chance to roam around like some do before they
settle down. I just might do that when I'm retirement age. ;)

We live in Stone Mountain, Georgia, USA which is just outside of
Atlanta. I was raised in Athens, Georgia (home of the University of
Georgia) which is a small town with a large university. It was a great
place to be a teenage girl ;) DH was an Air Force brat that ended up in
Lilburn, GA which is just outside of Atlanta, so when we got married I
left Athens and moved to the Atlanta area. Stone Mountain,GA is best
known for ... well, Stone Mountain which is the largest mass of exposed
granite in the world.  The only problem I've found living at the foot of
Stone Mountain is trying to garden at the base of a mass of granite.  I
can't dig very deep without hitting rock.  Otherwise, its a nice place
to live.

Compared to some of the rolling stones here, I have a pretty dull list of
residences. =o) I was born at Stanford University hospital, and grew up in
Palo Alto California (San Francisco Bay Area). My family moved here from
Minnesota when my Dad got his job at Stanford U in 1962.  Actually though,
both my parents are native Southern Californians. My oldest brother was born
in Walnut Creek, my sister was born in Boulder CO, and my other brother was
born in Minneapolis, MN.   I went to college in Oregon, but couldn't take
the rain, so after graduation, I moved back to California. I currently live
in Mountain View California.  What can I say? The climate here has spoiled

I was also born at the Stanford U hospital.  My dad was a Master's student

Both DH and I come from Long Island, in New York State.  We've moved
to LA, back to NY, back to LA, back to NY, and back to LA.  Since
we're retired, we're wondering if we shouldn't move again.  Our best
friends want us to move to Florida to be near them.  They're cat
people (and d*g and  fish and bird people) and they used to live just
a half mile away.  They were our best friends in NY too and they moved
to LA fifteen years ago.  Then they moved to Florida five years ago.

If I were rich instead of just OK, I'd be what US Americans call
'bi-coastal', living part-time on each coast.

I love Austin. I was last there about ten years ago so I imagine
it has changed. It is similar to Raleigh in that it is the state
capital, and very green and pretty--for Texas! I love the
way the hills ring the lakes. And the music scene was
GREAT when I was there.

It probably wouldn't be legal anywhere else in Texas though. Austin is a

I know, that's part of why I love it. Texans are special people,
funny and wild and with some common sense that many could benefit from.
But of all the Texas cities I've traveled to, Austin is my favorite.
Per Austin, my father heard Stevie Ray Vaughn in a small club there once.

Don't! Most people think it's filmed outdoors. That's how the set is
designed to look anyway. It is one of the most popular tourist

When that whole 'Janet Jackson assaults America with her nipple' incident
took place there were cries of, "She should have been arrested for indecent
exposure!".  However, in Houston, it is perfectly legal for a woman to bare
her breasts in public, so Janet was safe from prosecution!  ;>

Yup.  A local morning radio show here a few years ago got a few women to
actually go out on the street bare breasted.  I'm not sure, but it may be a
state law (or un-law).  When you think about it though it should be a law
everywhere so women can freely breast-feed their infants!

I think this must be the only country in the world with values so warped
that we encourage our children to watch and participate in the "simulated
warfare" violence of a football game and then go balistic if our children
see a woman's breast while watching this "family fare"!!!

They play here sometimes, but I've never seen them. What are they like?

First of all, they're great Bluegrass pickers.  They write their own
music though and I suppose you'd have to classify the style as
"novelty".  A lot of it is flat out hilarious and the rest is still
pretty good.

Oh geez. OK. No wonder I've never seen them. The mere mention of the
word bluegras sends me running for the hills. Sorry. :} No offense. I
like folk music.

I was born in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia (Europe), where I have
lived ever since. Soncek was born on the outskirts of Ljubljana and has
lived with me ever since he was 3 months old and his mommy (a beautiful
semi-feral silver shorthaired cat) let me take him home with me.
Best wishes,

I'm just outside of Memphis, Tennessee, USA.  No, I'm not originally from
here... I'm a military brat.  But I've lived here since 1972.  Born in
California, lived there twice; lived in Virginia twice; New Jersey; the
Carolinas; Ohio; Thailand; now Tennessee.

I'm originally from Pennsylvania (Carlisle) but moved to Baltimore,
Maryland to go to college, and I never left! I love this area. Close to
Washington DC and New York etc.  Xena and Callisto are from PA as well,
My mom picked them out for me from a stray litter a friend of hers had
taken in.  She called me and said, "get up here and get these 2 kittens.
You've talked about it doing it for years, so do it!!"  and I did.  Jennie

Started life in Indiana, USA, spent a summer in northern Alabama (red
clay all over *everything*!), then moved to southern New Jersey (south
of Philadelphia - the rural part of the state (yes, farm crops are
grown in New Jersey, it is not one big parking lot or toxic waste
dump)), moved to Illinois (Chicago suburbs), now back where I started
in southern Indiana.

I'm from Baltimore, too!  Don't live there now, but I grew up in the suburbs
and moved to Fells Point as an adult.  I loved it, best place I ever lived.
Currently, I'm in northeast Massachusetts, a mile from the New Hampshire
border.  DH is from here, and I moved here to be with him.

I used to go bar hopping in Fell's Point with B-town friends. The Horse You
Rode in On!
Eat Bertha's Mussels! I loved the antique shops, too. And I must confess to
being
a John Waters fan. That probably explains a lot. ;)
