I grew up in the NE of England - when it was still a coal mining area. In
many parts were slag heaps, with the spoil from the mines stored as *huge*
mini-mountains on the surface. When one of those caught fire it could burn
underground for years. Not nice.

We've got an "old" coal mine not too far from here (Grand Junction area
of Colorado) that's been on fire for years (and years, and years, and
well you get the idea).  It has even caused some forest fires.

Although I was only a child at the time, I have never forgotten Aberfan.
Seeing Cliff Mitchelmore crying as he reported it on black and white TV when
one of these huge mountains of spoil slipped after a lot of rain and buried
a school, full of small children.

My Lord. I was a toddler when this happened, so I had no idea about this
story until now. I'm sure that it was reported in the US and around the
world. What an awful tragedy! :o(

Yes, I can still see the pictures in my mind's eye, even though I was a kid.
Black & white TV days. I remember my mum being glued to the TV screen as the
events unfolded and the full horror of what happened sank in.

yes. I was 7 at the time - similar age to the kids who died. Out of 144
deaths, 116 were children :-(

There is just such a fire in mining country in PA,  burning for years.

I don't know if I would want to choose between one of those fuel
sources, though.  Two different kinds of unpleasant.

Storing all that manure in a giant pile was a crappy idea to begin with.
;o)

Somehow, though, it makes cleaning the litterbox seem like a really MINOR
task by comparison.
