Hi all!  I have been lurking here for about a week and posted to ac and apc
re: my little girl.  Her name is Willow aka Ms. Willow aka Ms. Thing.  I
adopted her from the vet when she was about 1 year old. She had a litter of
kittens on the Vet Technician's porch back in Poughkeepsie which is how she
ended up at the vets.  So she was spayed, had all of her shots, and then got
a flea bath thrown in.  That night when I was lying on my couch with her she
came over and licked my cheek twice.  I think she knew she was in a good
place (even though I'm a huge dog lover ::gasp:: as well).

Although I initially said I adopted her, it really became the opposite.  I
am now pretty well trained to her whims and when she says, "Jump!", I say,
"How high? and do you want food with that?".

She is a pretty little thing with gorgeous leaf green eyes, and her coloring
has been described by vets as tri-color and/or tortoiseshell.   I don't
think she the incredibly zany personality many torties seem to have after
reading this newsgroup.

Let's see...she is 10 1/2 now, adores my husband, which probably to her
outlook she "acquired" for me since he is a Ms. Willow fan.  We had a baby
boy 8 months ago, and according to her the verdict is still out on him.  He
lights up when Willow sashays by, tantalizingly close to bitty grasping
fingers, but far enough away not to be grabbed.  We have caught her "making
nice" or rubbing his foot, so we think he may have an in at some point.

That's about it...this seems to be a very nice and welcoming group.  I
haven;t read the faq that was posted a day or two ago...but I really like
the way you all handle trolls!

Oh...I also have some travel experience with cats re: overseas travel,
relocating to the UK without that dreaded quarantine, and tips for kitty
comfort on the way.  Ms. Willow is a jetsetter and has a feline passport,
her shot record:)

Hi Elizabeth. Welcome. My Daisy is a "torbie" (tortie/tabby) but has no
zaniness to speak of. She's a chow hound/love bunny. :) She's about 11
1/2. I now love the tortie coloring, of course.

So you moved from the States to UK? How do you like it?

Welcome.  Not that I plan on going, but I would like to hear how you traved
to the UK without quarantine for Ms. Willow.

My tortoiseshell, Jessie, is certainly zaney.  She'll be 6 in August, but
she's as playful as a kitten (and still looks like a kitten since she only
weighs only 4 pounds.

Here's some pictures that capture her personality:

Jessie is very different coloring than daisy. Daisy has no real white.
Just some lighter areas on hr face.

Love the cat motel! And I like the curtains behind it. :)

Thanks, but that was our old place (we rented) and the curtains stayed when
we moved.

I (and the cats) really liked those huge double-windows, but we have the
double sets of French doors in my current bedroom now - the only difference
is they look out on the deck instead of a lawn and the birdies and squirrels
don't play on the deck!! :<

For some reason I did not get CatNipped posts on my server.  Firstly...what
gorgeous kitties.  At first I thought I was looking at Willow until I
noticed Jessie has more color on her face, whereas Willow has more white.
The coloring on the body is quite similar, down to the ginger patches on the
flanks.

As for getting into the UK without the quarantine, I did some searching on
the web and found out by luck.  There is something called the Pet Travel
Scheme, that allows animals in approved countries to enter the country
without quarantine.  These guidelines (these may have changed since the
summer of 2003 when we traveled from Germany to the UK) *must* be followed:

1) animal must be microchipped
2) after the microchip has been put in the neck (I forgot which side), a
rabies vaccine is administered.
3) two or three days later a blood sample is taken. It is sent to a lab with
the microchip number, rabies vaccine sticker, along with the blood sample.
4) From this date, the animal *must* stay within the approved country for at
least six months, no earlier before heading to the UK.
5) the animal must be taken to a government vet within three weeks before
departing for the UK.
6) There are approved routes for bringing the animal into the country.

I think this is just for cats and d*gs...horses and other livestock have
different rules.

Oh, OK.  I don't think you can go from the US to the UK without quarantine -
I've read of several people even giving away their cats before trying to do
so.

Yes you can - Canada and the USA are part of the UK Pet Travel scheme.
HRFL Tiger and Pandora flew in from the USA lst year, and my dads cat
Robbie will be flying home next year. The paperwork is slightly more
complicated but it's still relatively simple to organise.

The only difference is that flying into the UK the animals have to
travel in the heated section of the cargo hold.

I didn't know that - from what I've read of others' posting about the
quarantine I'm not the only one who didn't know.  I read of one poster who
gave away his cat because he thought he couldn't get them into the UK
without months of quarantine.

It's a mistake that has been made by a lot of people, and to be fair
the quarantine restrictions have been in place so long for the UK it's
taken a while for the information to get out. However, the USA and
Canada also didn't join the pet passport scheme until around December
2002, several years after Europe. Certainly, when I made the decision
to take the mogs to the USA in early 2002 it hadn't been ratified and
passports were only being considered, but I had a good back up plan
incase my gamble didn't pay off!

I believe that more and more different countries are joining every year
as the scheme proves itself.

There are a ton of countries that are joining the scheme...from Japan, to
Australia.  I believe that the website that I posted has a list of countries
that are accepted.

Jessie, Demi and Bandit are lovely cats! And I am very glad that I am
not at home because if they had seen the "cat motel"....I would be
getting demanding messages "Meowmie we WANT one!"

Hi, M~Elizabeth, and welcome to the group. I have a tortie, too.  Or
maybe she's a torbie.  I guess I really don't know what she is, but
she's very colorful.  So far she's pretty zany, but that could be just
because she's only 9 months old.

Welcome again, and thanks for telling us about Ms. Willow.

Ms. Willow is a jetsetter and has a feline passport, her shot record:)

His Royal Feline Lordship Tiger would like Ms Willow to know that he is
equally well travelled re. jet setting as he also left the UK and came
back into the UK with a passport and without quarantine.  He would very
much like to know where she has been so he can compare notes about the
way the servants treated her on the plane so that he can make
appropriate complaints to relevant airline officials if Ms Willow got a
better service than him!

His Catslave, OTOH, would like to say welcome to the group, and tell us
more!

Haha!  Great name! No fear RFLT...Ms. Willow had pretty bad treatment on
KLM/Northwest and will not be flying with them.  I always carry her in the
cabin with me and they put me at the bulkhead of a nearly empty plane and
then suggested I put her in a closet.  I suggested they stay in the closet
for the flight.  United and Lufthansa have treated Ms. Willow the best.

Hey, you live in the same county as Helen (wafflycat) !!  Maybe you could

I love it when people on Usenet meet up.
I've only done it once myself and it was a spectacular success.

My name is actually Mary~Elizabeth, but it never fit in signature lines so I
just use the initial now.  It also provides some anonymity in usenet.

I was raised by wolves...just kidding.  Our family always had d*gs and we
were very partial to that species.  I saw the light in 1995 when I wanted
company in the form of a small animal.  I wavered between a small canine (we
always had large working breed dogs, so this seemed like blasphemy)  or a
cat and the rest is history.

I also refer to Willow as my little sister.  The d*gs had always been
referred to as sisters and they knew to come to me when that word was said.
I could be a mommy now...but I still prefer sister.

Wow.  Your story sounds remarkably similar to mine.  I got Oscar as a
companion to my black lab mix, Puma, when I moved into an apartment.  I knew I
didn't have the ability to care for a young dog in that apartment, and small
dogs ... yeah, not really my type.

Welcome, Melizabeth. =o)

If you love cats, this is a god place to talk about them. I love the story
about Ms Willow acquiring  a husband for you. Although maybe she thought she
was bringing him into the family for her own benefit. <G> Congratulations on
your baby boy, and I think Willow is being very sensible about staying out
of reach of reachy little hands for the moment. If she's rubbing against his
foot though, I'd say it's possible that she likes him.  At least she hasn't
demanded that you take him back to the "pound" where you found him, right?
=o)

Congratulations on evading the quarantine, especially to Ms Willow.

Oh no, OJ is being nice.  DH can also stand for Dumb Head, Dear Husband,
D*mn*d Husband, Dead(or gonna be) Husband, Departed Husband (or Heart
depending upon sentiment), and just about anything else you want to make
it into.  In my case it usually stands for Demented Husband, because Rob
(my hubby) has this really warped sense of humor.  I wonder where he
gets it from.....

Oh no. LOL. I meant specifically OJ's use of "DH." For a long time, I
didn't even know what gender OJ was. But he would say "DH....she...". I
always knew DH to mean some form of Husband. Once I knew that OJ was
male, I couldn't understand how he could have a female DH. LOL

That's why I spelled it out as "Dear Heart" with the capital letters.
Lynda occasionally lurks, but if she were to contribute, her use of DH
would definitely mean "Demented Husband".

Much like the caterpillar from "Alice In Wonderland", when I use a
word it means precisely what I want it to mean.

Thanks. The outside pictures (except the ones where the cats are wearing
harnesses) are from the island where we go for our summer holidays. It's
in the southeast archipelago of Finland. Unfortunately, our houses there
are not equipped for winter living, so we can't visit this time of year.
The pics where the cats wear harnesses are from where I live in
Helsinki. I can't let them roam by themselves here in town.

A house is not a home, without a cat.
