Karen - 22 Feb 2005 15:27 GMT You guys are probably sick of me but you are the only people I have to talk about this too. I gave him a LOT of food (well, way more than I had) last night and he did not throw up this a.m. which is good. He never did anything but urinate last night, so this morning I decided to take him for an enema. I feel sooooo bad, but I figure, if there is another clump in there like the last one, it would be another two days coming out and be more tiring and hard on him than ever. If there isn't anything in there, then we probably need to consider surgery because he must still have a lot in his stomach and the only way to know is to do this. STill, my poor baby :(((((

STill, my poor baby :((((( We *never* get sick of you and Grant. I'm so sorry that you are still having to endure this worry and (I'm sure for Grant) the pain. We will continue to send purrs and meatloaf meditations and gentle headbutts for Grant and yourself. Hopefully the enema will solve the problem and you won't have to consider surgery.

Poor little guy. :(

pistor - 22 Feb 2005 15:53 GMT Can they do an ultrasound to tell for sure if he has something that requires surgery?
Karen - 22 Feb 2005 16:39 GMT We've had a barium xray, and you could see the hair. He pooped out some of it a couple of days ago. So , we do know the problem is hair. The big problem is how fast is he evacuating it with laxatives and all. If much doesn't come out today, and he doesn't perk up tomorrow, it may be better, because his stomach is constantly producing acid from the hair that is still in there. We will see today how it goes. I'm hoping there was another big wad to come out.

Classical open surgery may or may not be necessary. Endoscopy (a tube down the esophagus, with lights, viewing, and long flexible instruments) can be done in cats; Clifford (RB) had a stomach wall biopsy done that way. It does, of course, require general anesthesia, but there's no incision. Breaking up a hairball and taking it out in pieces seems well within the capabilities of the technique.
The techniques of working through these scopes (specialized ones for different parts of the body) have greatly grown in humans. Many operations that once took an open incision, such as appendectomy and removal of gall bladders, can be done through a laparoscope. That takes a mini-incision, but heals much more quickly. You do want the vet doing it to do LOTS of them; it's important to stay in constant practice with the necessary hand-eye coordination. The visual image, for example, is usually on a TV monitor.

How scary, having a mass of hair, although as diagnoses go, that's not too bad compared to say, a tumor or something. You shouldn't feel too bad and run yourself ragged - try to think of it as good news that it was diagnosed, and he pooped some of it out! Purrs that the laxatives help him get the rest of it out. Hopefully, it's fairly loose, since he's not a long-haired cat.

I was grateful it is not a tumor, but honestly, I think he is suffering about as bad as if it were. Still, like the doc said, surgery point blank will fix it, but we don't like to cut a cat if we don't have to. So, there we are. I am indeed glad it wasn't worse.

HRFLTiger - 22 Feb 2005 16:03 GMT We're in no way sick of you or Grant. As if *THAT* would ever happen! All we're concerned about is that you baby boy is OK soon.

Gabey8 - 22 Feb 2005 16:34 GMT If you need to post a hundred threads to alleviate the worry you're feeling, go ahead and post them! We have all been there and we can empathize!
Having the vet check him at various points during this process is probably a good idea anyway, so you can be sure that things are progressing as they ought to be.
I can empathize BIG-TIME with your worry, as I went through a long bout of illness with Harmony late last year. I'm just thankful that Grant's symptoms are being caused by something that can be treated, and once it's taken care of he will be good as new! Even so, the days spent watching a beloved kitty going through all these symptoms are agonizing.
Purrs and purr-ayers for you both are continuing. Give him some extra skritchies for me. And when his appetite's back, give him an extra snack for me, too.

Mischief - 22 Feb 2005 20:32 GMT Are you kidding me? I LOVE reading about cases like this. It gives me a chance to apply the knowledge I've learned as a vet tech.
I can think, "Hmmm, if Grant came into my clinic, what would we do?"
Every now and then I'll mention a story from here in class and ask my professor about it.
Keep them coming and purrs for Grant

From things that I've read it seems that there are a lot of vets in the US that don't know a lot about inhaled medicines for feline asthma. I realize that there are people here with more experience than I have with asthmatic cats and could probably explain this better than I can, but perhaps you could ask your professor about inhale meds and the need to teach the advantage. Both the emergency clinic I took Sam to and our regular vet immediately recommended inhaled meds but I don't think that is common in most clinics. The advantage, as I understand it, is that the injected or ingested steroids are systemic and have side effects such as organ dysfunction and diabetes. The inhaled meds go straight to the lungs and don't cause the systemic side effects. You probably already know all of this since you're studying pharmacology this semester. Anyhow, a good website is www.fritzthebrave.com which includes information, a protocol for use and related links. I have become an advocate for inhaled meds and will take whatever opportunity I can find to promote their use.
Julie <proud of Sam's willingness to take inhaled meds>

He is sooooo sick of me. Poor boy. I don't know how much they got out, but they told me 90 percent of it was hair. He went a little more when he got home. So, he gets 24 hours to feel better. I sure hope that he is feeling better tomorrow. You would think he would! he is in the closet right now. On a shelf. Very not happy with the world. But, Iwill have to feed him again and get him laxatone. I SO hope he perks up tomorrow. After the other night and now the enema, you would think that is most if no?? Well, not much else to report. I think he hates me now, but hopefully he will feel better soon.

Poor Grant, he has had to endure so much these past few days! You know he doesn't hate you, Karen. I know how you're feeling, but think about it - he didn't hate you when you brought Pearl home and refused to take her back <vbg>. He couldn't possibly hate you for making him feel better - and eventually he will feel better. Hugs and gentle headbutts to you and Grant and meatloaf meditations to help move things along.

With people, you'd use barium only after you saw something abnormal on ultrasound or possibly regular X-rays. Abdominal CT, however, is replacing barium for lots of clinical purposes -- definitely more comfortable to the patient, and may give more information. It's hard to guess at veterinary prices, but with people, a CT is often cheaper than multiple barium studies. A barium meal or enema needs the MD/DVM's continuous inspection, while CT can be done by a technician.
Purrs for the headache.

Karen - 23 Feb 2005 22:01 GMT Well, there is still a large clump at the top of the stomach. The one that takes longer to absorb the barium. I would guess maybe it's become hardened. SHe is 95% sure it is hair sooooo he is staying there and having an operation tomorrow. I can go visit him late in the day. If all goes well, he can come home Saturday. So purr for my little gentleman. She says he is such a good boy and I know he is very good, he never fights about anything. Makes me wish I had bit the bullet right away and had the op to begin with but I guess you have to try and I certainly didn't think it would take this long. Our Philip was 16 yrs old when a "lump" was found in the stomach. From the X-ray, the vet thought it was a tumor. I agreed to the surgery he recommended, including the proviso that if it was inoperable, he'd euthanize on the operating table. The next few hours were unspeakable agony for the family. When we received the vet's call later in the day, dreading the terrible news, *surprise*!!! He'd found a giant hairball instead of a tumor! Philip was doing fine - and lived for four more years till age 20. Bottom line, remembering that as I think about Grant, I can't help but feeling confident he'll come through with flying colors - and I hope you can feel that way too.

She's now purring extra hard for Grant to come through with flying colors.

Gabey8 - 24 Feb 2005 03:48 GMT Tons of purrs that the surgery gets the rest of the hair out, and for a speedy recovery.
I can understand wanting to try non-surgical solutions before going for the more invasive techniques. If I was offered surgical and non-surgical options for my cats -- heck, for MYSELF, too -- if both approaches had a good probability of succeeding, I'd go for the less invasive method, too.
These are the times when I swear that anyone who becomes a cat parent needs nine lives just as much as our feline kids do, if not more!
Purrs and purr-ayers are going out that it's all good news from here on out, and that the worst is behind you and Grant.

And MORE purrs that your migraine goes away and stays away, and takes the attendant symptoms like nausea away with it.
