Not really, but they try to give me the impression that they are.

You see, today is the day that their (5) food dishes & (3) water fountains
get run through the dishwasher (on sanitize setting).  I leave the tub
faucet running a thin stream so they have water.  There is food scattered on
their 'placemats'.  But they sit and stare at the 'placemats' as if their
food dishes will magically appear, filled to the brim with food.

Poor starving kitties, Mommy *never* feeds them!

I know!  I cleaned Persia's fountain and bowl this morning and she just sat
there staring like "But... I don't have any water!"  Took all of 5 minutes
to wash her fountain (I didn't use the dishwasher) and you'd think she was
being deprived of oxygen or something.  She sat on the toilet seat lid and
put her paws up, inspecting as I washed out the fountain.  I put it back
down, filled it up, plugged it in - whoosh, it started.  Did she want a
drink?  NO.  The wench went and took a nap!

Felix does that too :-) [was Stinky ever a stray? I can't quite keep
all the bios straight]. He'll come get me and lead me to his dish and
make it quite clear that Meowmie MUST rearrange the kibble to cover
that horrible bowl bottom.

Abandoned.  He's long since stopped gobbling, and also stealing
everything edible that wasn't nailed down-- he used to jump on the
table, pull stuff off, and try to drag it away like a leopard with a
gazelle. :)
But some mornings when he wants to play, he still gobbles, then goes
bouncing up and down the stairs, and then <errrrk>. :P

That's nothing! Fez complains *loudly* that he is starving when he
gobbles up all of the larger kibble of the mix I give them. He loves
the big ones, so he eats them all and then yowls that there is nothing
to eat. If I don't pay attention to him, he tries Tom. Actually, he'll
try Tom even if I do go refill the bowl, just to see how much he can
get. :)

Oh dear!  You CAN teach an old cat new tricks cause my Punkers
discovered if she sits up on her hind legs with her front paws crossed
neatly over her ample belly and does her "silent meow", I melt.  At
least she withholds that pose until the special stuff...like fresh
salmon or a nice med rare steak...come along!!  PatM

Oh my goodness!  That is quite a trick. I picture Daisy trying that &
rolling over backwards like that old cat cartoon.

Oh, yeah, I know that feeling.  At Kitty Supper Time or Kitty Breakfast
Time,  I have three howling beasts that you would SWEAR had been locked up
with no food for at least a week. =o) And then mealtime lasts about five
minutes. (They get two generous meals a day, but I don't leave food out on a
continual basis.) As soon as I start fixing my OWN meal, I get a fascinated
audience, anxious to assure me they are severely underfed. Of course, if I
gave these cats food EVERY time they asked, Francesca would reach beach ball
proportions in no time. =o)

Every time my DH gets up from a nap, goes out and comes back in, goes
to the loo and comes back, the hard-core chowhounds (usually four out
of the six) seem to think it's a new feeding time.  She never feeds
them either.

Let me give you the award winner!

Some friends of mine went for a fortnight's holiday but they had the
ideal arrangement to care of "Fluff" their cat. A close friend agreed
to come and stay at their house for the whole fortnight to catsit. So
they left food and instructions but neglected to mention that Fluff
was a scrounger who could do the pathetic "feed me" act perfectly and
would stuff his face given a chance so he ought to be ignored or he
would get fat.

Result:

When they got back, their friend gave them a huge bill for all the
extra catfood he'd brought

Fluff waddled up the hallway to greet them, in two weeks he's managed
to get from stocky but not fat to belly on ground obesity!

It was later worked out that Fluff was eating 2 or 3 tins of catfood a
day!

And he was very very sorry to see his new friend go especially as he
was then put on a diet!

I was away this past weekend, and to keep the cats going until Saturday when
their pet sitter came,  I put some kibble into one of those dry food
dispensers.  I left what I thought would be plenty of food for three cats
for two days.  By last night it was gone, and Francesca's waist line was
somewhat inflated. =o) That girl is shameless, and I'm sure she'd pull a con
game on any live-in cat sitter just like Fluff did. FOr that matter, Nina
and Pan probably would, too.

Mandy once convinced a cat-sitter that the tins of Fancy Feast kept as
treats were her regular food. And since I'd told the sitter where to find
the real regular food, she got that too! Betsy, who is less of a con
artist when it comes to food, simply helped out once the food was
available.

Truly, the way to Mandy's heart is through her stomach; she practically
defines 'cupboard love'! She's normally a friendly affectionate animal
(except with vets), but she becomes positively adoring if she thinks food
might result, especially food that isn't already in her bowl. Oddly
enough, it's Betsy, not Mandy, who had the hard kittenhood searching for
food on the street. Mandy, whatever she might try to imply, has never gone
hungry for more than, say, a few hours pre-spaying.

This thread is sorta like what happened to Jazz once. Our daughter was going
to have her senior piano recital at her college and we were going. The
college was out of town and it meant we would have to stay at least
overnight at a hotel.
Since it was just overnight, we figured leave Jazz with enough food and
water and a clean litter box and he'd be ok until we got back the next day.
So, I put 4 dishes on his food mat, 2 for food and 2 for water. As soon as
the food was down he went to town chowing down! I said, no Jazz, that's for
today and tomorrow!
Well, he ate all the food, so I put down some more as we were getting ready
to go and when as I walked out of the door he was still at it.
He never did tell me if he was hungry that night or early the next day since
he had eaten all the food that was there in one meal.
