I know Hobbes isn't a real tiger (no, really, I do!), but this reminded me of
the tigers I saw on TV last night.  Watching them, I saw the same facial
expressions I've seen on Oscar, and the same behavior I've seen in many cats.
I have a picture of Oscar nibbling on grass that looks just like this tiger
nibbling on grass.  (The tigers were at a rescue facility for animals that
should be wild, but that some idiot thought would make a good pet.)  And
*that*, plus the comments by the rescue worker, reminded me of the recent
thread on whether you'd trust your cats if they were as big as tigers.  No, I
really don't think I would ...

The rescue worker commented on the fact that domestic cats are still predators
at heart and that they have the same impulses as wild cats.  It's interesting
that we wouldn't say the same thing about dogs (at least, I've never heard
such a thing).  I wonder if it's impossible to breed out that instinct or if
people never have, because it's part of the appeal of the cat.

Silly person - of course Hobbes is real!

I heard on a TV show that cats are the closest to their wild ancestors
of any animal. I can believe it.

If you've never seen it, the National Geographic special  "Cats,
Caressing the Tiger" is very very good. =o) It also makes the
relationship between wild cats and domestic cats very clear.  Small
cats do a lot of the same things wild cats do, such as scent marking
their territory, and they have many of the same hunting techniques.
Just different sized prey.

I do not think I'd want to live with my three if they were the size of
tigers, though. Nina and Francesca can play pretty rough, together.

Sometimes, when I look at some of mine, I see the regal, feirce wild kitty
it wants to be ;)

I don't think I'd survive!  Mimi likes being chased (can you see me
'chasing' a lion or tiger sized cat around the house?), and some of them
come up and lie on my chest/stomach for luvin when I'm (trying to) read in
the evenings...  I'd be creshed - literally!
