Well, he WENT. It didn't look like as much as we saw in the xray but it was
a lot more than has happened. Poor guy needed help getting it out. Left
streaks everywhere but that is OK by me. It was about 5 inches long, not
real thick and ALL hair; solid, solid. Stiff even. Now, that doesn't seem to
me to be enough by any means, but it is quite a bit and of course, I suppose
it would compact a lot. It gives me hope. i still think I will take him in
(he still does the licky thing etc.) tomorrow. He is lying more relaxed than
I have seen him in two days. Man, poor baby. this is just hell on him.

Yep!  That's it.  Gross, isn't it?

He will pass more - give him a couple of days.  Peewee passed things
like that for a couple of weeks - even after the big masses were out.
I think it is almsot like they get a diverticuli of hair, or something.

Don't fret - he's doing *great*!

Well it is a relief *something* finally happened. I'm still going to call in
the morning. Poor guy, what if it had happened while I was at work and that
thing was still sticking out of him? I gave him a pepcid and some water a
bit ago (I don't know if I am getting enough water in him.) I'll give him
some food in a bit (I don't think he has enough food either. It seems food
would help move things along?) and then some laxatone. Poor guy SMELLS like
laxatone :(  Did Peewee have eye trouble (or seem to) when he had his
trouble? Grant looks at everything like he has never seeen it before and my
moms longhair sometimes does that too and it seems to be when he has
hairballs. I'm glad to hear it was similar to Peewee's. Did you slack off on
the laxatone at all? It just seems that he will not be getting any nutrition
if I continue as much as I have been, and yet that thing was stiff and dry
enough that he certainy needs it. Any info would be helpful to my nerves to
hear of your experience.

TuTu seems to do great on Iams hairball formula.  When I give her Iams low
calorie, I give her one feeding of HB formula.  They now have a low cal
with HB and I am trying that.  Purrs that the worst of this problem has
passed.   MLB

Thank goodness! He must be feeling WAY better. Even if there's still more
to go, getting rid of this output is real progress.

Purrs that either it's all gone now or that there's not much more left to
get rid of. And for you and Grant to feel better!

Poor baby is right -- sounds like giving birth!   MLB

After giving birth to Cary, I didn't "go" for over a week, and boy I was
sure relieved (in all senses of the word) when I did again. It felt so
horrible ot be backed up and not being able to get anything out. He must be
feeling *so* much better now. Purrs that this was the "cork" and now that
he's unbunged, things get moving again as they usually should.

I was once in a bull session with some medical residents, discussing why
they had picked their specialties. The only problem of the aerospace
medicine/flight surgeon resident was guilt that they actually paid him
to have fun. The obstetrician described hers as a happy specialty, but
the hours and the malpractice were crushing.

The consensus was, however, that the urologist was most satisfied. He
said that his patients were the most grateful of all, either because he
restored their sexual potency, or, even more appreciated, let them
urinate.

I've been reading about poor Grant's problem tonight while catching up
on the group; we're sending him lots and lots of purrs, but this does
sound like real progress.  Poor baby.   :-(

Yes, do, Karen, but this is really good news.  Poor little fellow,
hope his ordeal is behind him (ahem) soon.

He has an appt. at 4:30 today. The main vet is a little concerned he is
still throwing up and that that is dark. Actually this a.m. He threw up at
about 5 (which he has done about that time everyday) but it was all dark
bile.). Such a worry. He did drink water on his own this morning. I still
had to force feed him though. :(  My poor boy.

I'm so glad that at least a good part of it has come out. Poor guy!

More purrs for things to continue to progress without surgery!

We went to the vet. He threw up again this a.m.(bile) I am just not feeding
him enough. He has lost almost a pound. He did not seem good this morning or
at noon, but when I came home to take him to the vet late this afternoon, he
actually came into the bathroom with me (not done for days) and drank a
bunch of water from that rooms water dish. Soooo, what we decided is to make
sure he gets plenty to eat tonight and see if he is perkier (which he really
is. He walked around a while, peeed, sat on the arm of the couch and watched
Sugar for a bit and has not been doing the licky thing hardly at all.) we
will see. If he back pedals at all, or seems less perky, we will try an
enema tomorrow and if that doesn't work surgery. Right at this moment, I'm
encouraged, because since we got home, he has just acted more normal than he
has for days, and even mrrrped at me once. I haven't heard him mrrp in days
either. So, keep those purrs comin' folks.

Purrs still coming Karen! I know you're a wreck. I know how much
that baby means to you!!  Glad to read that he acted a little more
normal. Do you know why they haven't tried an enema before now? Was
it too far up and it wouldn't have helped?

yeah, it wasn't even in his intestines when we had the barium xray done.
Just all in the stomach.

Ewwwwwwwwwww!!!!!

Man, I bet that he's glad it's out of there.  The descending colon can
hold a LOT.

I think if he hadn't gone an enema would be next in line.  There was a
cat at work that I remember holding while the doctor gave him an enema.
He was old and he didn't fight, but you could tell he was NOT happy.
And MAN when he finally went, he WENT.

Did the other cats see it?  I wonder what their reaction would be like.

Purrs,

Pearl and Sugar have been *extremely* respectful of Grant through this whole
thing. Pearl, in particular, has been an angel. Who'd a thunk it? She is
such a little dickens about bugging him, but she absolutely has been restful
through all of this.

Karen, I am thinking about Grant and wishing him well.  I know how

he really ebbs and flows. Seemed much perkier earlier and wasn't doing the
licky thing and now, he's doing it more. I did give him a lot more food
tonight. I can't decide about the enema at all. I guess we'll see what
morning brings.

After all that hair rubbing the inside of his colon, being so stiff,
his colon might need to rest and rebuild the mucous lining. I hope he
drinks plenty of water. That can help lubricate the mass. I am very
glad it is coming out. If you help him by pulling on the mass to get
it out, when it is protruding, be slow and careful. A hair or two
joining clumps together can actually cut the soft tissues. Purrs,
