Smokie Darling (Annie) - 20 Feb 2005 21:17 GMT
Hello,

I've been lurking for a week or so, and was just getting ready to
introduce myself (and my furbabies) when it seems there was some
difficulty.  Okay, it doesn't *seem* there was.  Anyway, I'm not the
most patient person on the planet, and I really would like to join in
some of the conversations, so here goes:

I'm Annie, I live in Colorado and I'll be 42 this year.  I am owned by
3 permanent cats (Tuppence 16 years, Barnabus Collins 12 years, and
Smokie Darling 4.5 years).  I differentiate with permanent because I
believe I am becoming owned by one Gomez/Leonidas (less than 2 years,
I'd guess).  He was dumped by someone, and he likes to go outside, and
my 3 permanent babies are indoor cats.

Once I get the funds, Gomez/Leonidas (I want to call him Leonidas
because he has a strong "Greek" nose and looks very noble, my DH wants
to call him Gomez Addams and I'm fighting that) will no longer produce
baby kittens.  At that point I will attempt to teach him the joys of
indoor living on a permanent basis.

Tuppence is, obviously, my oldest furbaby.  She has Feline
Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV?) which is being treated with Interferon
(sp?), and seems to work.  She gets a teeth cleaning every year, and
"pulse" antibiotics once a month.  She was dxd with FIV in '96.  She
named herself when, after I'd bought her, I was watching Mary Poppins
(I'm a bit old for it, but I like it anyway) and the scene with the old
woman selling bags of bird seed for "tuppence a bag".  Everytime the
woman said Tuppence, she looked at the television.

Barnabus Collins (Barnybutt for short) was a "doorstep" kitty.  Someone
dropped off a momma kitty and her kittens (eyes still closed, and
looking newborn) at a friend's house.  At about 5 weeks, DH and I went
to their home, and Barnabus (or Susie as the owner called him) sat next
to me, and kept trying to bite my behind.  He's named after the vampire
Barnabus Collins from the old American soap Dark Shadows.

Smokie Darling (Smokie) was another store purchase (like Tuppence).
I'd gone to the mall, and walked past the pet store.  Here was this
scrawny little black snaggy looking kitten, just crying and crying.
They had just sold her brother.  When the clerk got her out and handed
her to me, she began purring and trying to get under my hair.  Can you
say "SOLD"?  DH named her Smokie when I wanted to call her Spot (she
used to only have a little white spot on her tummy).  Since,
ostensibly, Smokie was to be his cat, he named her.

I also am owned by another furbaby, of the barking variety.  That one
likes to herd the cats, which is rather fun to watch.  Especially the
old cranky girl.

So, now that you've "met" my furbabies, perhaps I can intrude on some
of the ongoing threads.

You could inquire with your local Humane Society or other rescue
organizations to see if they provide low-cost spay/neuter services. Some
even have coupons for discounts with some vets. :)

Hi..

Once upon a time, okay this won't be as long as the first one was
(sorry about that).  My brother left his "outside" cat with me, when he
(the brother not the cat) became a truck driver.  I took Madison to the
Humane Society to get him fixed ($25), he was so sick for so long I
ended up taking him to my "regular" pet doc.

The Humane Society apparently didn't take care with their equipment,
and I nearly lost him (the cat not the pet doc).  However, since they
are a no kill shelter, I still bring them bags of IAMS and pet toys, to
help offset the costs.

I'll save up for the $100 neuter, it's worth it to me.

That's not good and I understand why you wouldn't want to risk it again.
Here in Austin the Humane Society is quite good at that, when we
fostered kittens they had their surgery there and came back home to
recover. They were just fine. However, like you, I trust my vet more, so
when we got our last fosters, Fez and Rufous and we decided to adopt
them, we waited until they were 6 months old and had our doctor do the
snipping. :)

Welcome to the group, Annie.  I'm Nan and I'm a transplanted buckeye
now living in Tennessee.  My owners are Tiger and Tigger who showed up
at the same time in my car port about 4 years ago, and Boomer, a
gigantic yellow lab.

What a delightful crew and Tuppence is a testimony to the possibility of a
good life for FIV kitties. We have another kitty here named after Barnabus
too! Small world. Welcome.

Gomez/Leonidas has yet to be properly named.  I think he should be
named after King Leonidas because of the battle of Thermopylae
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae.  My DH wants to
call him Gomez Addams (Addams Family) because he has a half moustache
that DH remembers Gomez having in one of the episodes.

He's a stray, but he has quite a bit of Siamese (chocolate) in him.
He's got the beautiful blue eyes (his "outside" name was Blue Eyes,
they are Paul Newman blue) and the chocolate point ears and tail.  He's
a sweet cat.  Once he visits the pet doc, then he'll be properly named
(I'm thinking it must be Leonidas, really, he acts like he owns the
place).

I really shouldn't be allowed to sit alone with a computer ... for some
reason I've suddenly taken to "replying" (sending a reply back to the
originator of the last post) as opposed to "follow-up" (replying to the
group so all can see me, unless anyone's killfiled me!)

So here we are again (with apologies to Nan):

My best friend's mother has been "38 and a half" ever since I've known
her and her daughter.  I've known her daughter for over 20 years, and
she turns forty very soon, so something's not quite right somewhere
.....  When asked why the half, her response was "I want to be a
different Zodiac sign."

Welcome Annie, to one of the nicest places around.  I'm Cathi, and I
live in Whitstable, a little seaside town on the north coast of Kent in
SE England. I live with my other half, Richard, and am graciously
allowed to live in the house owned by Jasper (handsome black male DSH
with diabetes) and Carrie (cuddly female tuxedo DSH).

Hee-hee, I usually to say I am 29 with 12 years of experience (since I
haven't come upon my birthday yet).  Some people don't seem to get it,
or get a bit upset.  They seem to think I'm lying about my age (well,

Welcome Annie.  I'm glad you did join in when you did - we need a diversion
and new stories (and pictures, I hope?) about new kitties are always greatly
appreciated.

Someone else here just named a kitty Barnabus, so now we have two.  We also
have two Bandits (mine's one), but the other Bandit's slave is away just now
because he lost a beloved cat and isn't up to writing (that's Gordon, or
"Exocat" - I hope he comes back soon).

OK, it's been a while since I wrote about my crew, so thanks for the
opportunity.

There's Bandit - DLH tabby *gorgeous* green eyes.  *She* will be 15 on April
8.  She just ran inside my home one day when I opened the front door when
she was about 6 weeks old (she got her name by stealing my home, all my
possessions, and my heart).  She is a holy terror (her most apt nickname is
b*tch cat from h*ll!).  Here's is a (only very slightly exaggerated) story
about her: http://www.gcmensa.org/Bandit.asp.  I just posted some pictures
of her at http://www.possibleplaces.com/Bandit/.

Then there Demi - DLH pure white.  She just made 6 last September.  We got
her when she rode to my DH's workplace in the engine cowling of a coworker's
truck!  She is the original scaredy cat.  She's the most gorgeous cat I've
ever seen, but nobody gets to see her!  Her pictures are at the bottom of
the page here: http://www.gcmensa.org/Sammy2/.

Then there's Jessie - DSH, tortoiseshell.  Jessie will be six in August.
Jessie is our little clown, she's only 4 pounds, but that 4 pounds of pure
attitude.

Then there is Sammy - DLS, tabby.  What can I say about Sammy?  I think this
tells it all: http://www.possibleplaces.com/Sammy.asp.

Anyway, again, welcome to the group.

Hugs,

Wow, what beautiful babies.  Tuppence used to be the cat with attitude,
before she got sick.  Mostly now all she does is lie on a heating pad.
She does, however, run to her dish when it's "Stinky Time".  The pet
doc said that so long as she goes to the food on her own, she is
alright.  We don't want me carrying her there for the final two years
of her existence.

So, was the other Barnabus also named for Barnabus Collins?  I've got
some regular visitors who've decided that Barnabus was named for the
13th Apostle, since they don't want to consider he might be named after
a *vampire* (snicker, snicker...sorry that's rude).

I should probably figure out my camera (to use fewer mega pixels or
whatever they are called), then take photos of the inside babies, and
the outside ones.  There are approximately 15 to 20 stray cats around,
and since I had two crawl under my house and die of starvation two
years ago, I've been putting food out.  I've even named some of the
"externals".

Yes, I think Julie named him after the character in "Dark Shadows" (wasn't
that just a great little campy show?!).

I first ran into the name "Sarrasine" in the "Vampire" Role playing
game and yes, THAT is one Hell of a vampire! But when someone
explained the meaning it just so suited by little black lunatic so
okay she's sort of named after a Vampire....but only because it suits

Oh, I was teasing about my Elders who come by every other week.  They
have a very hard time dealing with vampires, werewolves, etc...

So, Barnabus, to them, is named after the apostle picked to replace
Judas (and *his* name is spelled Barnabas, but that's another story).

Oh, *elders*!   Are you a Mormon, Annie? I have a huge Mormon family -
although I'm not one myself I'm very used to the lifestyle. "Dear Heavenly
Father, thank you for this food etc etc."  Second nature to me now.  (I know
someone will want to add "like breathing out and breathing in..! ") so I
added it myself.

I'm a converted-then-lapsed one.  Hence the Elders coming by so often.
Rather upsets the DH, so I'm going to have to put an end to it.

Oddly, when I do talk to the "Big Guy" (frequently), I still pray that
way (Heavenly Father, thank you...).  I have a major problem asking for
things *for* me, and that somehow seemed to become a problem with
Bishoprick (sp?).

I always asked for everyone else, but not for myself (must be that
Catholic upbringing, eh?).

Hi! Welcome to you and the fur kids! :o)

I'm Donna. I have two 10-month-old boykitties, Captain and Stanley, whom I
adopted from the local animal shelter a month ago tomorrow. :o)

Prior to becoming the boys' Meowmy, I was owned by two girl kitties who
came from the same shelter in 1990, Melody and Harmony. Melody passed away
a week after her 10th birthday, due to cancer. Harmony passed late last
year.

Within a few months, the need to have cats in my life again became even
stronger than the grief of missing the cats who'd gone to the Rainbow
Bridge (see petloss.com for the RB story). Hence, DH and I filled out
another application to adopt at the same shelter where I'd gotten Melody
and Harmony. Within two weeks, Captain and Stanley were here.

I have some photos online that I took the night that the boys came home:
http://members16.clubphoto.com/donna674416/2979870/guest.phtml

I have some newer photos, also, but I haven't uploaded them yet.

What handsome little boys they are.

I'm currently trying to upload some photos into my Yahoo album.  Poor
Tuppence looks a fright though.  She's had a cold in her eyes and she
won't let me clean her face.  Fortunately, the antibiotic "pulse" seems
to have taken care of it.  Now I've just got to convince her to let me
clean her up.

At any rate, you can see the three "permanent" internals, and the one
who hasn't decided yet:

Welcome to the family, Annie.  I have the other Barnabus in the group
and yes, he was named after Barnabus Collins as well.  He's a young,
long hair black cat.  Because he is still young he's bitey so when we
were trying to decide what to name him Barnabus just seemed to fit.  We
thought he was solid black but now he has one white hair on his neck
that stands out against the black fur. It has been a long time since
we've been adopted by a young cat and it has been an experience having
him around, but it's been fun.

I am also owned by Hobbes, a gentle giant of an orange tabby cat who is
our first baby. He showed up outside when he was about 3 months old and
was absolutely certain that we were his family. So we have been for the
past 7 1/2 years.  I purchased Selena from a rescue group to be a
companion to Hobbes. She's a beautiful, long hair white and silver,
birman looking cat with big blue eyes.  She's our goddess and she and
Hobbes are well and truly bonded.  Lacey is a slender, small calico that
showed up in our yard several years ago. She was reluctant to be a part
of the family but once she agreed to come inside she's been happy and
shows no sign of ever wanting to go outside again. Sam is a large,
siamese looking type moggie that was left behind when the neighbors
moved last summer.  We adopted him in September when we realized he was
left behind.  He's a sweet, laid-back old man who is tolerant of the kid
and very loving with his hoomans.

Personally, I'm 49 y/o and live in Stone Mountain, Georgia with my
husband and the cats. We're looking forward to reading stories of your
babies and seeing pictures...we love pictures.

Welcome, Annie!  I don't think you need permission to pull up a chair and join
in.

I'm also a newcomer to the group.  I believe my first post was in November.  I
have a female grey long-hair named Oscar, as in Oscar the Grouch =P  We also
live in Colorado.  We're in Longmont; where are you?

Of course!  Welcome, Annie! If you love cats and like friendly people, this
is a great newsgroup.
I am owned by Panther, who is my senior citizen. He will be seventeen at
some point this spring, although I don't know his exact birthdate. I adopted
him from the local animal shelter as an eight week old kitten. He was an
adorable, fuzzy all black fellow with green eyes, and he climbed right into
my lap and began to purr and wash my face.  At that point, I realized my
right kitten had found me. I took him home with the late, beloved Isadora, a
black and white spotted female.   She went over the Rainbow Bridge last
spring, due to kidney failure.

About two months after saying farewell to Isadora, I went down to the Humane
Society in a nearby town, and adopted Francesca, a six month old female
brown classic tabby with golden eyes.  (I had secretly wanted a tabby for
many years. And on my second visit to the humane society, there she was. =o)
She had a bit of a cold when I adopted her and the Humane Society vet
thought it wouldn't be safe for her to be put under anesthesia, so they sent
her home with me to get well away from the other cats/sources of contagion.
It took her almost three weeks to get well, after which I spent a very
irritating week trying to talk to a human being at the Humane Society to
arrange for Francesca's spaying without any luck. This was probably lucky,
as at the end of the fourth week, I had to make an emergency vet trip where
the Emergency Vet said brightly  "She's not sick, she's pregnant." The next
morning, my regular vet had to deliver one living kitten and two dead ones
through an emergency C-section.   The vet estimated the kitten was about a
week to ten days ahead of schedule, and she was very tiny.  Fortunately,
Francesca had a  strong maternal instinct, and was able to raise her baby
successfully.

That baby's  is now eight months old and spayed, and her name is Nina.  She
is a brown tabby like Mama, but with much more white on her. She is a little
love sponge, and an ardent chaser of toys, and protects me valiantly from
the dangers of rolled up toilet paper.

If you would like to see pictures of them, here is the link to my photo
album on Yahoo. The album is helpfully named "The Cats I Love"
http://photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos

Please don't  feel shy about joining in, it's always nice to have a new cat
lover around. =o)

Oh Boy!  Another person to share things with!  Yay!

My name is O J.  I live in LA with my dear wife, Lynda, and six
furbabies.  I'm glad to meet you and hope you find the time to keep up
with all the traffic here.  I'm retired and find it hard to do.  The
thing is that you never know when a real gem will lie buried as a
reply to a reply.

Nice to have you here.

Regards and Purrs,
O J

Hello O J,  I do not work, so finding time to read and post isn't a
problem.  I have noticed that it can get a bit hectic here, but nothing
compared to one of the gossip groups I'm (mostly) read and (sometimes)
post to.  They get 200 to 400 new messages every couple of hours.  Good
practice for this place though.

Hi, Annie, DH and your babies! I love their names! I'm sure you'll all fit
right in rpca.
Best wishes,

Hi Annie

I've not been on this group for very long myself and it is a really
friendly group.

I'm Lesley from London, UK with Dave my SO and fellow cat slave.
Former slave of master Speedy Joe and mistresses Isis and Fugazi. Alas
Speedy vanished aged 4 (we never did find out why but we've never had
an outdoor cat since through some friends believe they saw him a long
time later- he was a fiend in feline form so many of my friends had
good reason to recognise him- a survival instinct being the main one).
Fugazi died of cancer aged 12 (The worse day of my life: In some ways
worse than losing my parents). Isis passed away in her sleep at the
age of 16 in 2003

Two catless days later I was on the phone to a work colleague who had
a semi feral cat who had kittens in her shed.

A month later the cat carrier was opened and we had kitties again,
Sarrasine and Redunzel. They are now almost 2 years old and complete
maniacs apart from when the heatings on or there is food to be had
(Yesterday Dave discovered they like tiramisu- how strange is that!)

The funny thing is Dave and me both come from backgrounds where
contact with cats was discouraged (my mother used to reckon they were
"evil" and Dave's mum is actually phobic about them)
