Just really feel discouraged. Grant seems worse today. He did eat a half jar
of turkey baby food at lunch, but tonight he just doesn't want anything. He
peed but nothing else. I'm just so discouraged. I called my best friend and
she is out all night. So, I guess I just had to express myself here. Doesn't
really help either I guess. It's just something you have to get through I
guess. I sure feel for people who have family members with illnesses. It
must be a living hell.

Don't give up, Karen.  If Grant is eating and drinking he should be OK for
now.  Do you have an emergency vet you can use if he seems worse tonight or
tomorrow.

If you want to talk to someone, send me your phone number and I'll give you
a call, or if you don't want to give yours out I can send you mine.

Hugs,

I would call the vet if it becomes emergency emergency time. I think I
really have to give it another day anyway. This kind of thing takes a little
time I'm sure, but come Monday I'll be worried on the nutrition front. For
sure we won't wait past that.
Gabey8 - 20 Feb 2005 01:50 GMT
Sorry to hear that. Prayers and purrs that Grant starts feeling better
ASAP.

Keep observing him and if you're not satisfied with what you see, to the
point where you would like to have a vet give him a look, bring him in.

If his regular vet hasn't got Sunday hours, they should have an answering
service that can page the vet, if needed. (Been there. Done that. I called
them, they called the vet, she called me back.) And just in case, make
sure you've got the contact info for the nearest emergency vet. Obviously,
we all hope you won't need to call them, but better to get the number and
address and keep them handy now, when things are calm.

Prayers and purrs for YOU, too. Every one of us who's kept vigil for a
sick cat can empathize.

Hang in, Karen.  As long as he's not vomiting, stuff is still moving.
Be sure he gets enough fluids - and you may have the hair pass soon.

He has vomited, but not after he eats. It was at night and his stomach was
empty. I don't know. I keep trying. I don't know how much is enough and how
much is overloading. He drank water on his own this morning but tonight. I
just think it isn't going to happen :(

It could be a large chunk of hair is moving through the intestine now
and is causing some discomfort. Laxatone and plenty of water will keep
it moving. the peristalsis can help to tear a large lump up somewhat.
By the time it reaches the colon, he should feel better. And a cat has
a much shorter intestine than humans. Move, hairball, move!  Hugs,

Boy do I hope that is it. I will try getting more water down him. Poor cat.
It seems like I don't do anything but shove stuff down his throat.

Again extrapolating from human medicine, has anyone considered a stool
softener such as docusate sodium (Colace) and/or a lubricant enema or
suppository?

If this doesn't work, it sounded to me like surgery was left. but then
again, I'll talk to her tomorrow. So far, he is NOT tossing food back up. I
force fed him some just now, because he got sick. He was interested in
eating, but just couldn't. He is still keeping it down 10 min. later. I'll
try some more in a while. She seemed to think as long as the food wasn't
coming back up, things were at least not surgery necessary.

We used to have to give one of our dogs Metamucil.  Hard to figure the
proper dosage for a four pound dog.

Remembering a certain experience with the miniature dachshund of my
teenage years, Peter. Peter was exceptionally small for that small
breed, having been born without testicles. He usually weighted about 4
pounds, or perhaps 5 after a heavy meal.

He also had an unfortunate tendency to eat the inedible. One evening, we
came home to find him rolling his eyes, looking much like a slot machine
just after the handle had been pulled. To put it delicately, he seemed
to be developing significant thrust at the canine equivalent of the
nozzle of a rocket.

Rushing him to TED, I helped with the diagnosis.  At first, he seemed to
be emitting fat, but it didn't stain as fat under the microscope.  He
began to calm down and seemed OK, so we took him home.

The next day, my mother, searching for a new jar of Vaseline, found it
under a couch. Empty. A four pound dog had eaten a full pound of
Vaseline.

Ah yes, I'm not surprised.  He was a hound, and hounds can and will steal
and eat almost anything.
My hound Trim (RB) was a terrible thief.
She learned how to open the fridge, and stole and ate margarine, butter,
milk, cheese, bacon, in fact almost everything that was in there.
So I learned to foil her by drilling a hole through the worktop on the top
and through the top of the fridge door, and dropped a 4 inch nail through
it.  That stopped her.
Then she started to break into the food cupboards.  She could eat through
tins.  I won't even tell you about when she got out a tin of black molasses,
carried it from the kitchen to the lounge with the lid off to take it to her
bed, ate most of it and vomited it all up on my rose pink plain carpet.
Yellow and black.
I tried child locks on the food cupboards.  Lasted a week before she learnt
how to bypass them.
Then I had a bright idea.  Suitcases latches fitted to the cupboards!
That sorted her.
Except that I often got home from work and she would have a bitten up wooden
spoon in her bed, that had been *near* food.
Her crowning glory was when I got home once and found she had my food
processor cuddled up with her.
She had had to live wild for a while,(I guess she was dumped) but she never
stopped being obsessed with food after that. I adopted her when she was 2,
kept her until she passed away at 14, and I could *never* trust her near
food.  I still miss her a lot.  She looked like a smaller version of an
Irish Wolfhound, but a bit blacker.

Wow Tweed. What a resourceful pup! Here I thought I had it bad with
the hoolikittens. Ok, yours is much worse! YIKES!

Poor lil Trim for having a rough life that made her have to learn
those skills.

How long did it take to return to normal?   When Princess was old and ill
(RB16) she kept trying to "go" without success.  I took her to the
emergency hospital and requested an enema.  The doctor felt her abdomen
and thought it felt normal.  I insisted so he complies.  When I went to
take her home, he told me it was surprisingly large.  She felt much better
after that.   I assume if the animal has a fever, the stool will get dry
and hard>    MLB

Karen, I'm so sorry it isn't better yet. At least there is another
option if nature doesn't take its course. Yes, it'll be harder on
him, but there's an answer.  Purrs from my gang 0 four that it

Oh yeah he'll be going in. Unless some miracle happens between now and then.
If nothing else, they can give him fluids, which will probablly help and
maybe some other nutrition. He's not really worse, but he is not better. I
did hear some gurgling in that area as I was petting him a minute ago, but I
put him in the box in hopes and he just left it.

Check to see if he's dehydrated. Gently pinch up a fold of his skin and
let go. If it goes back down slowly, instead of quickly, he's dehydrated.
At which point I would be surprised if the vet DIDN'T want to administer
fluids.

Speaking of fluids... ask the vet if it'd be a good idea for you to learn
to administer sub-q fluids to Grant. If he needs them between now and the
time he passes this darned hairball, maybe it'll be easier on both him and
you if he can get the fluids at home, rather than making a trip to the vet
for them.

We're still purring for you and Grant so that hairball will pass ASAP, and
all can go back to normal.

It's easy to become discouraged. I think the best thing you can do for
yourself and for Grant is hang in there and realize that he might just
need some time for this problem to work it's way through.

I am so sorry, Karen, that Grant isn't feeling better. I can imagine how
stressful it must be for you. I wish I had an answer for you but Sam is
sending special purrs that things move along quickly. He understands
having recently been found to have a narrow pelvis which blocks things
up. When he was in the emergency clinic they gave him lactulose to
soften his stools. He was there from Saturday night until Monday and
when I picked him up Monday morning they told me he hadn't had a bowel
movement and I should give him the lactulose every 12 hours until he
did.  We left the emergency clinic, went by our regular vet and spent
about an hour there going over his clinic notes and xrays and getting
instructions about inhaled medicines then went home.  I released him
from the carrier and he ate two bites of food and went straight to the
litterbox and let loose. Apparently he just didn't want to use a public
litterbox for something so personal (lol). I wish Grant's problems were
as easily treated. We'll continue to send purrs that this hairball
softens up and exits before Monday morning. Gentle headbutts to you from
everyone as well.
