When I sat down at my computer this morning Scout jumped up on to the
desk in front of me and lay down. That's not unusual - she likes to be
close by... what was out of the ordinary was the volume of her purrs
when I scritched her head. She sounded like a motorboat! I wish I had
a microphone so you could all hear it :)

On another note, does anyone know how to kill off sugarants safely?
My computer desk has been invaded! I've been killing the little
suckers by hand whenever I see them but it's a losing battle...
somebody suggested a bait station but I'm worried that Silver will
sniff it out and eat the bat. Help!

Also, keep those job-hunting purrs coming please. John had an
interview on thursday, but we didn't hear back yet so I guess that
one's a 'no'. He's got another one this afternoon...

purrs for both of you continuing re the job hunt -- re the ants -- I'd
suggest an exterminator may be able to find out where they are nesting
(hopefully it is outside) and try to get the source; there may also be
environmentally friendly exterminators that don't use the chemicals you may
be worried about..  If you can find the source of where they're coming from
inside you might also be able to erase their scent trails to your desk --
I'm thinking wiping down your desk with some kind of odor-killer.

On one occasion at my mother's house, a line of tiny ants was coming
in through a crack between the sink and the wall.  I checked outside,
and didn't see any ants on the outer surface of the wall, so they were
apparently coming up from the basement.  I didn't want to put down any
sort of poison right next to where food was prepared and dishes were
washed, so I put a piece of cellophane tape over the crack.  The ants
apparently gave up once they found their route was blocked, as they
didn't reappear anywhere else in the kitchen.

Good luck on the job hunt.  I recently got a new job, after having had
to work just part-time for a year, and having to live partially off of
a home-equity loan.  The new job pays better than I was making before
I had to go part-time, and has medical insurance benefits, which the
previous job lacked.  I have just completed my second week on the new
job, and am enjoying it.

Wiping down the desk with a cat didn't help... Scout and Silver were
both lying on the desk in front of me this morning purring their heads
off. They kept wanting to lick it and rubbing themselves on the wood.
I'm thinking that they enjoy the smell of formic acid! lol Anyway, the
ants are still there...

Putting talcum powder down where you think they are coming in will do for
them.  Somehow it kills them when they try to cross it.

LOL!  And I can just see little kitty talcum powder paw-prints all over the
place.

Another method is putting cinnamon in their path.

Karen AKA Kajikit <kanospamjikit@gmail.com> had some very interesting

I'd give it at least until Thursday before giving up [I've landed jobs
where it took them a week to decide among candidates].

Hope this one goes well, especially since he's giving up a Saturday
afternoon for it.

Don't get discouraged about not hearing about the job this soon.  Lots of
companies wait until they're through with the interview process, make a
hiring decision, and get the applicant's acceptance before they'll tell any
of the prospects anything.  Doesn't make the waiting any easier, but it's
common.

PS.  Neither of us have any useful ideas about the ants.

I once killed some sugar ants accidentally. I didn't have sugar in the
sugar bowl; but they thought it was. they ate the Sweet n Low and died
of starvation or cancer, who knows which!

That deserved a BW, Catherine. My father worked for Squibb
Pharmaceuticals for years (now Bristol Myers Squibb).  We grew up on
iced tea sweetened with a product called Sweeta.  Originally Sweeta was
whatever the sweetner that was supposedly found to cause cancer.  I can
so relate. We have sugar ants as well and I generally use the ant traps
covered with a heavy item (sometimes a candle stick) to keep the cats
away.  I usually bate it some with a little honey to make sure the ant
are atracted to it.

I got myself a microphone just so I could record Nikki's purring. ;o)
Lori kindly posted the file on her website at
http://www.possibleplaces.com/Nikki_Purr/ in case you haven't heard it.
It's available in the Catslaves files too.

I've had great results with Liquid Ant Bait. It's at www.gardensalive.com

I put down small trays (bottle caps) and the ants belly up and drink their
hearts out. And they don't come back.

<G> Rhett has a loud loud purr too. I think he makes up for Bonnie
who doesn't purr at all.

I've had ant problems off and on since I bought this house and the
only way I could keep them at bay was to treat the outside. Find
and treat ant hills that are close to the house. Treating indoors
has done nothing. This year I fear a bad infestation. Rhett bats
food around the kitchen floor and as much as I try to clean out his
"toys" from under the oven, I know there is a lot more out of my
reach. It's going to be bad!!

Oh no! Well, more job purrs coming John's way.  And to all RPCA'rs
needing job purrs right now.
