How cute!  I like dogs.  Only ever had one in my life but he was a little
sweetheart (and my protector without being a guard-dog!).  Tiny little
Sampson fit in the palm of my hand when my (long time now) ex-husband
brought him home.  I said, "That's not a dog!"  This tiny little black mutt
came towards the sound of my voice, this tiny tail about the size of my
little finger wagging like mad.  My heart melted.  Sampson was probably only
about 5 weeks old, barely weaned and I don't think he could see well.  I
gave him some gooshy Alpo dog food and in his haste to eat it his entire
hind-end lifted up off the floor as he pushed his face into the food.  Too
funny!  It's an image I'll never forget.

That, and the image of when I took him to my mom's house (when they still
lived here).  I had him on a long leash out back.  I was watching him
through the sliding doors from the kitchen and there was (puppy) Sampson on
his hind legs, smelling one of Mom's roses.  Awwww!

No cameras are ever around when these moments happen, dammit.

What wonderful memories!  Sampson must have been quite a cutie.

He was.  The most he ever weighed was 12 lbs.  He looked like a tiny black
lab; he even "pointed" when he heard a sudden noise - froze in position, one
paw cocked back, tail straight out.  It was pretty funny to see.  And you
didn't dare reach across him to touch me - he was all teeth (BIG teeth for a
small dog).  And for such a tiny dog, he sounded like a huge dog.  He didn't
"yip" - he barked, from deep in his throat.  ROAF ROAF ROAF GRRRRRRRRR.  I
miss him!

Kitty Persia has taken up the slack.  She also growls when she hears a
strange noise.  First time I heard it she was lounging on my lap when I was
reading and it startled the heck out of me.  I thought, "OMG, she sounds
just like a panther!"  So I call her my grey panther.  But she purrs more
than she growls :)

They're cuties, for sure.

It could just be me being paranoid, but I can't imagine anything short of
a major emergency that would cause me to leave my pet unattended outside
while I went indoors. Regardless of how well-fastened the leash was, I'd
be worried in case something happened to the dog when I wasn't there.

Including the fear that some slime masquerading as a human would hurt or
steal the dog.

I could be overreacting, but nonetheless, I would only want to have any
pet of mine outdoors when I was there with it.

On a lighter note, did I mention how cute those dogs are? ;o)

I hear ya.  I've done it occasionally, but I wouldn't want to do it for more
than a quick stop at Wendy's or something.

We're actually looking into putting up a fence so that we can have a dog, and
he would live outside during the day, while we're at work.  I'm still trying
to weigh the security of the fence vs. the dog's ability to keep himself
entertained by watching what's going on around town.

Most definitely!

Happens all the time here.
