Shamrock and the vet office cat

Tonight I had an appt to take Shamrock to the vet to get yet
another Depo shot. The last time I had to take him, he'd gone 3
months since the shot before. I had such high hopes that I'd found
the allergy trigger. I thought it was possibly the wheat gluten in
the canned Pro Plan that he loves. I stopped feeding it when I was
trying to get him switched over to Wellness canned. Well, that shot
only lasted a month and for the last couple of weeks he'd been
chewing himself again and I didn't want to get him a shot at the
first sign of itching because, well, he's been getting shots nearly
every other month for the last 2 years. Lots of steroids. But its
all that helps him and I feel so bad to make him wait.

Our vet has a resident cat that was born with a defect - one of her
front paws is curled up and is missing many toes. She's elderly
now, so she has grown used to her disablity and hops around and
even uses part of her leg above the curled foot to put her weight
on rather than hop on three legs. There is a wicker basket in the
waiting room with samples of Science Diet dry food for clients to
take home. Well the little clinic cat (I can never remember her
name) was hanging around the basket and meowing for some. Shamrock
is a noisy cat when he's in the carrier, so he's meowing and she's
meowing back at him. He'd meow again, she'd answer. I wonder what
they were talking about?  I imagine she was complaining about food
that she couldn't get to, and he was complaining about being in the
carrier and just wanted to go home.

Rusty's vet also has an office cat named Chico. Chico is a white cat
and looks like a Persian. He came over to meow to Rusty in his carrier.
But Rusty just ignored him.
Rusty is also missing a toe in each of his paws. The vet said it is
hereditary.

Rusty ignored him?  :) What powerful self-control!

I think Rusty was anxious to go home after being 'tortured' by TED.
He had his blood and pee 'stolen' for tests. But I wanted to wait and
see the blood test results before going home. Rusty has always been
a shy and quiet cat unless he is demanding food. He also complained
on the way to TED and on the exam table. Otherwise you hardly hear
from him.
I saw Chico again when I went to pickup prescription food for Rusty
today. Found out that Chico is also a senior cat, but not as old as
Rusty who is 10.
BTW, Rusty also couldn't stomach Pro Plan dry food.

Selena has allergies similar to Shamrock and it sounds like they're on
the same frequency - a shot every 3 months (although we've gone almost 4
months so far this time).  I'm like you, I hate to subject Selena to the
steroids but it is the only thing that makes her well. I've tried to
find triggers and have suspected my smoking as one.  Since I can't smoke
indoors any more because of Sam I'm anxious to see how long we can go
with Selena. But Selena sends special purrs to Shamrock for his itchy skin.

How sweet. Maybe Shamrock has a girlfriend. Her Meow (if you really
loved me you'd help me open one of these bags)..His Meow (I do love you
but how can I reach the bags when I'm in this carrier?).

Scritches and purrs to Shamrock.

Great about the 4 months!! We've only managed to go about 3, tops.
What does your vet say about the frequency of the shots? I don't
smoke indoors, either, and I even quit burning candles for months
thinking that could be it. I really really need to get a carpet
cleaner in here in case its something there. But, even though it
needs cleaning, I don't really think that's it because Shamrock
came to me with an outbreak. I'm going to have it done soon, so
maybe, who knows?

My vet and I don't really discuss the side effects of the steroids,
Cheryl. She knows that I know the side effects of frequent shots but
I've chosen quality of life for the moment.  Selena is so much healthier
right now than she ever has been in the past and I'm hoping that because
of that she's more stable and able to resist allergens.  In the past,
when she begins showing symptoms of allergies (pulling fur and skin
eruptions) she would get so very sick, she'd lose weight and she'd hide
from us.  I would try to wait as long as possible before getting a shot
but the symptoms were just overwhelming. She would go in weighing around
7.5 lbs and put on a pound right after the shot. She'd stabilize around
9.2 pounds and still look skinny.  Right now she's weighing around 10
lb. and I'm very pleased with the way she looks. I should probably have
allergy tests done and find out exactly what is causing the problem.
Right now, I'm feeding Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach and Skin dry food.  I
wasn't as aware of the airborne allergens with Selena as I am with Sam
because of the asthma, but I suspect Selena is going to benefit from the
restrictions as well.

Give Shamrock special scritches from me and I hope that his itchy skin
goes away very soon.

Julie, I completely agree. Shamrock is a grumpy, antagonistic,
itchy mess when he doesn't get a shot when he needs it. I guess I
just like to share feelings about this with others who are in the
same position. If the length of his life is longer, but he is
miserable, well I wouldn't do that to him.

Will do, and please give Selena some scritches from me. These poor
lil ones. :(
