I just got back from the vet with Cosmo. He had had some ear
problems, and was seeming not in the best shape in general - a little
dehydrated, losing weight, and just not doing as well as I would like
to see. He was diagnosed five years ago this May with CRF and a heart
murmur, and is on Lasix and potassium supplements to deal with his
problems.
No ear infection, just a buildup, which apparently happens quickly,
especially in older cats. So we got his ears cleaned out, claws
trimmed, and a stray mat or two shaved off (he turns into Fearsome
WildeBeest when you try to groom him or trim his claws).
Unfortunately, he was more dehydrated than I had thought, and his
kidneys, the vet said, were shrunken and knobby, indicating that he
has lost quite a bit more function in them.
The vet gave him some fluids, and gave me some to bring home. So the
day I've dreaded has finally arrived. I know that he will only go
downhill from here, even though I will give him the fluids and do what
I can for him. At least I'll *try* to give him the fluids -- lol!
With Cosmo, the Fearsome WildeBeest, it could be a problem. But I
will do the best I can.
I knew the day was coming, but it is really hard to take right now.
Any purrs are appreciated.
Love,
Ginger-lyn and Cosmo

Purrs on the way. Sometimes all that's left to do is sit and hold them and
let them know they are loved.

Hugs and purrs, Ginger-lyn. I am very sorry to hear this, as kidney trouble
was the cause of having to put Isadora to sleep at about this time last
year. I hope Cosmo rallies a bit, although I sympathize with trying to
introduce fluids to a wildebeest.

Hi Ginger,
Purrs to you. Fuga has CRF as well. We started doing the fluids at home a
few years ago. The best advice we got was to warm the fluids up in a sink
with with warm water as it makes it more comfortable. We give fuga a treat
after the fluids he gets the Royal Canin Low Protein soft food which he
seems to think is fancy feast.
Feel free to contact off the list if you want to talk or would like some
support.

Our best purrs are coming.
For what it's worth, DeeDee cat could be a real wild monster when it
came time to give her meds, but she accepted the sub-q hydration quite
nicely. As someone else suggested, bring the fluids up to room temp
before administering it - that will make it a lot more comfortable for
Cosmo.
If you have any questions or just want to talk about it, feel free to
e-mail me or Nancy as well. dan at wolf dot com or nancy at web dot tf,
but Nancy doesn't check her e-mail very often.

Lots of purrs, meatloaf mediations and gentle headbutts for both you and
Cosmos, Ginger-lyn. Hopefully he'll realize that the fluids help him
feel better and will accept you giving them to him. Sam and I spend
special time together each morning and evening when he gets his inhaled
steroids and while I think he realizes the meds help him breathe he also
enjoys the time that is spent just between us. Hopefully this will be
the case with Cosmo.
Good luck,

be a hassle but we kept our Custard going for over a year after her
first treatment. Good luck. Hugs

Lots of purrs that you can keep Cosmo with you for a long time yet.
Kidneys. Huh. I've lost several beloved dogs through kidney failure and
all bar one were in their teens.
The trouble is, and this is only my own thought, the longer you've had them
the more precious they are.
Thinking of you and Cosmo, Ginger-lyn.
