Purr Request [OT]

CatNipped - 10 Feb 2005 15:10 GMT
OK, I worked up the courage to compose an email asking for a salary review
(yesterday).  I haven't heard back from my bosses (the chairman of the board
and the President/CEO).  I think I made a pretty good case for why I need
and deserve a raise, but with these people you never can tell what they'll
do - I might get fired instead.

So purrs would be appreciated that it all works out (at least that I don't
get my butt fired!).  Since I am the main breadwinner of the family and
we're over-run with debt, a raise sure would help us pull our bacon out of
the fire!

Hugs,

You've got it!  Hope you get the raise!

Bosses can be either so wonderful or downright nasty.  Through all the years
I worked my last job the company went through a lot of changes.  My
knowledge and abilities continued to increase but it seemed with each
management change my reviews went from "walks on water" to "must improve"
even though my work product remained consistently high.  My raises went from
an unprecendented 9% one year down to 2.5%.  Yet all my co-workers relied on
me and my knowledge to help them out.  At the very end, it was (I'm
convinced) a personality conflict with the latest manager which resulted in
my separation.

Of course we can send Purrs your way CatNipped.
Money Purrs on there way.
Keep in mind that most times no news is good news.

Sending the best of purrs!  Having smart, competent people is the
cornerstone of a good business.  Let's hope they provide a little
monetary recognition.

Well I certainly hope you don't get fired!! But as much work as they are
getting from you, I don't think they would do that. Purrs for a very
positive outcome.

Doesn't it just burn you up when you leave a job and they hire two people to
do what you were doing, and pay them more?

Where I work, everytime someone leaves, we just have to suck up more
work.Get this, we just lost a part timer, advertised 9-3 job, not real
tough, not really a huge amount of any kind of experience needed. They got
ONE applicant. I guess life is good in Lincoln. You would think some  mom
would JUMP on that.

Purrs coming up!  From what I've read, you certainly deserve it.  I
sure hope you don't get fired.  That wouldn't be legal, would it?  I
mean, you should at least be allowed to ask, shouldn't you?

Thanks all!

Yes, I went ahead and asked because this is a (relatively) "small" company
and they don't have regularly scheduled performance reviews and raises.  I
went with the theory of "Don't as, don't get" hoping that the worse that can
happen is they say no and I won't be any worse off than I was before.  But
after I sent the email I got to thinking, well, no, the *worst* that can
happen is they get p*ssed off at my cheekiness and fire me (OK, that may
just be me being paranoid).

Again guys, thanks for the purrs!

Hugs,

CatNipped

I doubt they'll fire, they'd have to hire more than one person to replace
you. (as if they could) Purrs that you get a raise.

Suz, I love your posts but could you please quote some of what you are
replying to?  Sometimes certain servers drop off the original posts so there
would be no way someone could tell.  Thanks :)

Jill the service, (due to AOHell shutting down its news reader) I'm now
using makes quoting difficult. I try to say what I'm referring to in the
post. I.e Catnipped asking for a raise and concerns about firing. If you
read my post it makes sense. Rememer I'm using an unusual method of
reading my ng posts. All quotes would be hand tyoed. Plus typing for me is
a lot of work. I type with a pencil, one letter at a time, due to my
disability.

Suz, are you still on a Mac? I am too and use news.individual.net with
no problem. I can recommend a Mac newsreader if you wanted and give you
the exact settings to use news.individual.net, if you can connect to it
at all? Or are you now restricted to web and email access only - no ftp
or news?

Sorry to follow-up my own post - should have made clear that I do not
use AOL, but if you want to try accessing USENET via Mozilla, MacSoup,
Newswatcher or Outlook Express etc, I could help you with the settings
information if you wanted.

with using OS 9 than the fact its a Mac. Monday I'm getting the new
'puter. I use other browsers than aol, aol is just for email and getting
online. But after I get used to the new pute that might change. Stay tuned
;o) But thaks so much for the offer.

I hope I didn't overresponed Jill, my blood sugar was low (prebreakfast)
and I was feeling a bit sorry for myself. Sorry.

No problems Suz, glad to hear you've got a new computer sorted anyway,
even if it's not a Mac :-(

I'm sorry, I didn't intend to offend or cause you discomfort.  I was not
aware of your disability.  I use OE with "quotefix" which allows me to quote
items posted to newsgroups without a problem.

Lots of purrs going your way, hoping for a big (well deserved) raise!
To answer to Britta, Texas law allows anybody to terminate employment
for any (or no) reason. The only exception is that they cannot violate
federal anti-discrimination laws. So, as long as they're not
discriminating because of your gender, religion, race, or disability,
they can fire you for whatever reason they want.

Right, and for some reason they call the the "Right to Work" statute (sounds
more like the "Right to Fire" to me!!).  They don't even have to give you
any notice!

Well, it's been two days since I sent the email and I have heard a peep from
anyone about it.  The good news is I didn't get fired (at least yet -
keeping fingers crossed), but I didn't get a raise yet either.  I'm hoping
that no news is good news and they're just deciding on an amount!!  ;>

Thanks for all the purrs, guys, I'll keep you posted.  For now, send you
purrs to Holly, she needs them a lot more (nothing like news like that to

Nope, haven't heard a peep out of them.  I'm going to wait another week or
two (we just had a fatality accident at our LA depot and everyone is dealing
with that) and then bring it up again.
