Last night I had to run out rather late to pick up my hubby from the
airport. On our way home, it was around 330 this morning, I accidently
hit Diamond with my car. Diamond is a handsome chocolate lab that lives
on my street. i took him to his house and we all went with him to the
emergency vet ( I payed the bill) He fared pretty well, a broken
scapula was the worst damage, nothing internal thank god. I feel so
bad, he is usually never in the road and had apparently dug his way out
of the back yard. So if we could spare some purrs for this guy I know
he could use it.

Purrs on the way.
And thank you for not being one of those folks on the court television shows
who refused to pay any or all of the bill on the premise the dog shouldn't
have been out. Sometimes they get out. (Of course my opinion on this
changes a tad if the loose animal attacked and hurt or killed another animal
that was secured by its owners, or bit a child.)

Greetings...
Okay, I don't understand this. Yea, sometimes they get out. But guess
what, it's still your responsibility as a dog owner for what the dog
does when it gets out. If it gets hurt, you the dog owner are
responsible.
Having said that, I'd have taken the dog in to get treatment and paid
for the visit myself if I couldn't find the owner. And I would have
expected the owner to pay me back if they could afford to. Mind you, I
wouldn't take it to Judge Judy if I didn't get my money back.

I disagree,
I hit there d*g with my car, So even though he was in the street it was
still my fault
had it been a person it would have been my fault so I don't understand
what the difference is here.
I would feel differently if this was a d*g who was always in the street
etc. Then I would blame the owners but I never see him out with out his
humans untill last night.

Yeah, I feel that way too. It's not like they just turned him out.
Regardless, you want to do right by the dog more than anything.

Technically and legally you are correct. However, this isn't a dog they
just let run all over the place. If that were the case I'd be after the
owners for repayment. But I wouldn't take it to Judge Judy, either :)

big dog ran into my car once. He bounced right off & was fine.

Oh no!!! Mega purrs for Diamond. He should do well if there is no internal
trouble. Poor guy :( Poor you!!! I'm glad it was not...you know...worse.
That would be AWFUL.

I was still feeling so bad about it this morning that I stopped by

(looks so big it would have to be a dinosaur bone) So I plan to try and
take it too him this afternoon as kind of a piece offering.

If he's anything like the other Labs I've known, he still loves you. He
probably loves EVERYone. I've never met a Lab who wasn't convinced to the
roots of their soul that EVERYBODY is their best friend. Even the
everybodies that they haven't met yet. ;o)
But I'm sure he'll love the bone. It'll give him something to occupy his
time with while he's recuperating, and he'll have something else to do
besides plotting ways to exit the yard and explore without his humans
accompanying him.
Donna thinking of the Labs I've known that were some of the friendliest
dogs I've ever met
Holly - 09 Feb 2005 14:47 GMT
Well Donna,
You were right, I took Diamond his bone, and if he knew I was the
culprit he never let on to it.
He hopped over to me and you would have thought he had known me for
ever.
He also was very fond of his Bone.
Thanks for the Purrs guys, I think this big guy is going to do just
fine.

Purrs for Diamond to be on the mend and wagging his tail soon. And purrs
for you too - you know it's not your fault.

Purrs and tail wags for you and Diamond. I consulted with my local Lab
expert (Boone, my black lab) and he said Diamond will be pleased with
the bone but being a Lab he never harbored any ill will and is sorry he
caused you any distress.

Margaret,
Please tell Boone, thank you very much for his advice.
Gabey8 - 08 Feb 2005 17:03 GMT
Yikes! Thank goodness he'll be OK, from the sound of it.
Purr-ayers and purrs that register on the Richter scale are on the way for
Diamond, you, and Diamond's humans. This must have scared the living
daylights out of all of you.
Oh, and some extra purrs are being sent that his humans find a feasible
way to make some changes in the yard, so he can't dig his way out again.

It can be tough. At 5 years old, Puma (RB) suddenly discovered he could jump
the fence. From then on, we couldn't keep him in. He'd jump, he'd dig, he'd
find a way. We installed an invisible fence as a last resort, and that did
finally work, except for during thunderstorms, when he would escape and outrun
the storm.

Oh, how awful for you (as well as for him, of course). Don't beat yourself
up about it - it could have happened to anyone and his owners are lucky it
was someone who cared enough to bring him home *and* pay for the vet! Labs
are notorious diggers, it's almost impossible to keep them inside a yard!!

fear that my dogs would escape and get on to the road.

Poor Diamond. That's scary! I hope he gets better fast.
Sometimes, an animal just runs out in front of you and there's nothing you can
do about it.

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
Hugs to you too, Holly, I'm sure you could use them! Events like that are
very traumatic, but I'm glad Diamond wasn't killed or hurt too badly. It
was very honorable of you to pay the vet bill, and I'm sure Diamond's family
appreciated you coming right to them and doing the right thing by Diamond.
Accidents will happen, but you chose the best way to stay on good terms with
your neighbors.
Hopefully, a better security system can be found to keep Diamond from
getting out, again. Even with the best intentioned, responsible dog owners
in the world, you do get the occasional escape artist. My Aunt and uncle
have an invisible fence, and their four dogs stay ON their property, having
learned that the fence may be invisible, but it is still real, and can zap
them. (Fortunately, they also live well off the main road, and the dogs have
plenty of room to frolic ON their property.) Hopefully, Diamond has
learned a valuable lesson about staying out of the way of cars for his own
safety!
