My little Mimi (RB) demanded affection, on her own terms.  She loved
all kinds of pets and skritches-- the more vigorous the better-- but
you could not hold her, and she would never sit in a lap.  When she
grew older, she would allow me to cradle her in my arms-- actually it
only required one arm to cradle her little self.  I would walk around
with her like that and sing "Shrimp boats is a-comin'" in tribute to
her tiny size. ;)  But there was no holding Mimi in her prime. ;)

Stinky was always a very cuddly cat-- in fact, when I got him, after
years of Mimi's straight-paws, I was really caught off guard by how
cuddly he was.  I think the second evening he was home with me, I was
sitting and watching TV, and he was running around the house like his
tail was on fire (all this ROOM!), and he entered the room, jumped up
on the couch, climbed into my lap, and basically crept up my chest
until he was just about under my chin.  Where he fell asleep in a
little pile of purrs.
I think I actually had tears come to my eyes.

So he's a lap kitty.  That's terrific!  But he soon showed me
something else that really blew my mind at the time.  While I was busy
in the house, the (then! ;)) little fella would come trotting up to
me, and MEOW!  It wasn't food, it wasn't water, it wasn't the litter
box?  What could it be?  After a while of me not getting it, Stinky
would get up on his *hind legs*, and rrrrrrrrr and M-E-O-W!!! some
more at me.  It took some thick, hoomin-type thinking to figure it
out.  In my own defense, I have to point out that Mimi had *not*
trained me in this way.  Eventually, I bent over-- and Stinky leaped
into my arms!  He wanted face-to-face cuddles!

And after a long hard day of snoozing, doing upside-downy head, and
chasing mousies, Stinky will climb into my lap when I'm watching TV,
and give me big, gooshy blinky eyes, most likely trying to brainwash
me into doing his bidding. ;)  And every night he herds me into bed,
so he can get in his very important meatloafing on my chest time.  But
I am still amazed that the big galoot still comes and signals that he
wants to come up and put his silly ol' paws around my neck, and the
kinds of off-the-ground hugs and cuddles that he asks for.  He's put
on some weight since those days. ;)

Awww!  Never having had a cat before Oliver I was also surprised by this
behavior.  These were the animals who are aloof, right?  :-)  Oliver
runs up and put his paws on my legs making cute little sounds.  That is
my signal to pick him up and he throws his head on my shoulder and lays
like a sleeping baby.  I have to carry him around with me until he is
finished with me.  :-)  He also does something similar with my husband
but a little different.  He stretches in a certain way and that is an
indication Steve is supposed to pick him up and fly him around the room.
It is a subtle difference but he has us trained to know the difference
now.  :-)

Yep, they are totally aloof!  I never had a cat before Persia, either.  I
was shocked the first night she slept on the pillow over my head.  She's
definitely a snuggly lap cat.

All but one of my cats over the years have been snuggle pusses. But
I've never had one that liked to be carried. I have to be sitting to
hold them. If I try to walk around or even stand, they jump down.

To all: Do your cats like to be carried?

Persia will tolerate it (briefly).  She puts her paws over my shoulder and
it feels like I'm carrying a big furry baby, which of course I am! :)

None of my current ones do (although Grant isn't too bad if you throw him
over your shoulder.) But I"ve had cats that liked it. My mom's Tycho loves
to be held like a baby.

Before we got most of the current residents, our Lady Jane Grey liked
to be fed her moist food on the coffee table in the living room.  The
proper method was to hold the food plate in one hand and sling the
cat, upside down, between the other arm and one's body.

I cannot lift or carry TuTu -- she is just to big for me.  She, however
will jump into my lap for petting and grooming.  At night she likes to
either sleep by my head or cuddle next to me with her head over my heart
(I think weather is a factor here).  What gets me is that sometimes when
she is all lovey she will lash put at my arm like she would like to kill
it.   MLB

Sammy does - I hold her cradled in my arms like a baby, or upright where
she's looking over my shoulder.  Jessie likes to ride on DH's shoulder and
will tolerate being carried, but she doesn't like it as much as Sammy.  Demi
is scared witless if you try to pick her up, and Bandit will chew your arm
off if you dare try to hold her.

You mean there are cats who will actually walk someplace under there own
power? :-)  Seriously, he isn't that bad but Oliver sure loves to be
picked up and carried.  At bedtime he often will stand in the living
room and cry until you come pick him up and snuggle with him on the way
into bed.  He is a pretty athletic cat and runs around playing and
picking on the poor dog all day but he just adores rides.  At night my
husband has to pick him up and carry him around the room held above his
head so Oliver can inspect the things he normally can't get to.  No,
we're not enslaved.  ;-)

I don't tend to carry them. If I do, it's to do something they're not
fond of. Banishment to the basement for daytime separation (we have
some behavior issues here), medication time, checking out skin
problems or the healing progress of a procedure that was done, etc.

Picking up to cuddle is another story. 2 will submit to being
cuddled, one will, but only if he's done playing, the 4th will have
no parts of being picked up at all.

Yes!  Vino loves to be carried.  He doesn't like to be held when we're
sitting.  Oh no.  He wants us to put more effort into it than that.
He wants to be carried around like a little baby and he wants us to
stop at various places so he can sniff and get a good look around from
his new vantage point.

Jeeves can only be picked up and held by me for a very short time (less
than a minute) but DH being a large guy (and Jeeves being a large cat)
can hold him and even walk a very short distance for several minutes at
a time.
Gossamer likes to picked up and walked around the apartment but, seeing
how she tries to climb off onto any tall object we pass, it's probably
just because she wants to be up high.  She absolutely loves to be lifted
onto the shelf in the top of the closet :)

My cat Henri  RB liked to be carried and cuddled, would lay beside me
in bed with his arms round my neck, but unfortunately Wilson has straight
paws like Mimi most of the time, and these he puts on my chin so I can't get
close to his face, occasionally I can outfox him though, and then he'll
tolerate a short nurse   Jean.P.

Jimmer barely tolerates just being held, and only if I hold him sort
of belly-up.

Buck only tolerates being held if I'm sitting at the computer, and
only then for as long as she's interested in looking out the window.
She gets really squirmy when she wants down.

Grizzly isn't always in the mood for it, but she knows how to ask to
get down without squirming and digging her hind claws into me, and she
does enjoy a trip around the house once in a while.  I used to cradle
her, but she's since decided that looking backwards with her front
legs over my shoulder is the way to ride.  She can rub her face on the
wall corners, check out the top of the fridge, and stuff like that.
Bonus for me--when she's up like that, I can put my ear to her side
and *really* hear her motor.  I love that.

My Nikki used to be like Theresa's Mimi when she was younger. She was my
wild child who could not tolerate being held and never came into my lap
of her own free will. Whenever I picked her up, I would get the
icky-human straight-paw treatment. But from a kitten, she liked to ride
on my shoulder. It was OK for me, too, as long as she was a kitten, but
these days it's a bit much, seeing how 'fluffy' she's become. The good
thing is, as she's got older, she's mellowed out and these days she
comes and sits by my chair each evening and just looks at me with big
imploring eyes. This is my cue to pick her up so she can settle on my
chest for some scritching and cuddly nap time. You should hear the
rumbles from her then! (If you haven't heard Nikki purr yet, Catnipped
kindly posted the file on her website:
http://www.possibleplaces.com/Nikki_Purr/) I've told her time and time
again that she doesn't have to wait for me to pick her up, she can get
up herself, but we're not quite there yet.

Frank has always been a cuddly boy, and though he doesn't like the
picking up bit (which I try to do as gently as possible), when he is in
my arms, he snuggles down and purrs and rubs his face all over mine. He
was never a lap cat either when he was younger, but these last few years
he's started coming up in my lap. He seldom lays down, though. He
usually sits there, bolt upright, looking regal and expecting scritches.

Aww. What a cute pic & a nice sound to hear here at work. I'm surprised
no co-worker said they heard it. It's a pretty strong purr!

My Moxie doesn't get in my lap either. I can pick her up & hold her for
a few seconds when I'm standing. She's gotten so much beter over the
years. I could barely touch her when I got her. Now she likes a little
petting, scritching & face rubbing. So I hold out hope that some day
she'll get in my lap. :)

Not that I'll let Captain or Stanley see said pics until I know if it's OK

Rosie was my snuggle cat.  I think it was because the breeder spent a lot of
time with her.  She said whenever she was home she carried her around in a
pocket in her apron.  Not sure it she was hand raised or the runt of the
litter, but she was a tiny cat and she always wanted to be close.

Well, the remarkable thing for me about Stinky was that I rescued him,
in a very literal sense.  There seemed to be absolutely no reason why
he should have been a little lovebug, or even trusted anybody.  I
don't know where he spent the first six months of his life, but
finding him on the subway tracks didn't exactly speak well for that.
:P   I took him literally off the subway tracks-- then to the vet--
then home.  And that was that, he was HOME.  There was no period of
adjustment  (i.e. Mimi went under the bed and stayed there for a
week).  He just looked around and said "OK, I like it here, and I like
you, too."    Even Mimi, who bopped him on the head.  He was just
busting with sweet, generous good nature from go. ;)

Oh,  I kind of meant that, too.  Having both of them was a real
education in what a huge range there is in cats-- physically, and
personality.

It's amazing to me how much I love them both, while they were so
different.

When my friend wanted to get me my next cat after Henri had been
RB for a year, I asked her please not to get one like Henri because
he was one alone,no more like him, I actually meant not one that
looked like him, as it would have torn me apart, and she couldn't have
got a cat any more different than Wilson, he is completely the opposite
to Henri, so when I love him I love him for himself.   Jean.P.

What a sweet boY!

When Gossamer was a kitten I had just moved to my apartment and had no
furniture.  I would lean on a big pillow propped against the wall to
read and she would drape her tiny little self across my chest just below
my chin and sleep.  Eventually she had to learn to sleep on my lap
because I couldn't see the book for the fur :)
