OT - Question for the Aussies

Ok, this is probably really silly, but I need to know the dimensions
of a king size mattress in Australia.  I always thought a king is a
king and a queen is a queen, but it turns out that there's a US king
which is different than a king here in Thailand.  So I was wondering
if an Australian king would be different again, or what.
Anybody got any measurements, or websites that may tell me?

Dunno Britta, but I'd probably ask here:
http://www.bedshed.com.au/contact_us.cfm
They're probably the biggest bed retailer in Purrth.

I can tell you that a queen size is about big enough for a smallish
woman and five cats, but you wouldn't want to cram too much more on there.

Thanks, Helen.  I wrote to them and they answered me this morning.
Seems that the Aussie King is the same as the Thai one, not the US
ones.  This is very good news for us :-)

What may be adding to the confusion.  There are two different Kings here in
the states.  King and California King (which is more common here)  The
California King is Narrower and longer than the standard King.

You're right, that did make things more confusing.  Even more
confusing is that both the US King sizes are different than the Asian
King, which seems to be the same as the Australian King.  Aaargh!  But
I think I got it now.

Dunno the dimensions, but I wouldn't recommend you get a King here unless
you are quite well off. Why? Because the linen for a king bed is difficult
to find. You can't just wan't into a department sore or supermarket to buy
your sheets or doona, you have to go to a bedding specialist.

Queen sized beds are pretty standard, and sheet and doona sets are available
in the supermarket aisles, in Kmart as well as the  specialist places.

We have a king sized bed and have found that it's not difficult to get
linen for it. We go to Spotlight mostly, or Big W.  Target has a range
of stuff in king size as well.  We have, however, chosen to use two
queen-size doonas / duvets / quilts rather than a king-sized one.
This is because it is easier to find cosy places for 3 cats and 2
people to sleep comfortably with 2 doonas rather than 1 (avoiding the
gravity-well-kitty effect :^))

Drat and Blast! The whole lined thing was the only reason neither of us got
a King inthe first place. Guess my lined knowledge is outta date then.

Oh well, the next bed be a king, although I'm sure Shmogg will be sure that
it *still* doesn't have enough room for him, his hoomin *and* that little
black upstart!

That effect is the worst!  I like sharing a comforter with DH, because I then
get to mooch his body heat.  But then Oscar crawls in between us on top of the
covers, and suddenly my side is exposed =/

In winter, Joel is *wonderful* to snuggle next to, because he is an
incredible heat source. In summer I dont' want him anywhere near me! That,
along with my prediliction for "swimming" whilst I sleep, my ability to
steal the blankets, his ability to steal pillows, our totally different idea
of what "warm enough" means, our mutual buzz-saw snoring, our differetn
sleep cycles (well, before Cary came along anyway) and the fact I like
critters on my bed and he doesn't means that for the sake of a good night's
sleep, we don't share the same bed or even the same bedroom.

Shmogg, thankfully, is only a bed hog. He's not real interested in the doona
or pillows. IBKFergus, however, still thinks that the bedmice shouldbe
subdued byher mighty hunting skills. Which makes hot nights remarkably
uncomfortable - I can either sleep under just a sleep and be cool, but be
regularly attacked by sharp kitten claws and teeth, or I can be safe from
the Mighty Huntress's death lunges, but die of heat exhaustion.

Remind me again why I adopted her?

Thanks, Yowie.  This is what the Bedshed people wrote me also.  Good
to know because it's the same as the Thai king.
We already have tons and tons of king sheets and stuff, so that's no
problem.  We're wanting to get a bed custom made here in Thailand but
want to buy the mattress in Australia.  That's why I was asking.  No
chance of us sleeping on a Queen ever again.  No chance at all.  The
cat takes up too much room ;-)
