Purrs please. Molly my kitten is here purring and kneading, but she would
like some help if possible.

My 2 year old boy Casey has had problems going to the bathroom all day
Saturday (yesterday), and I am going to have to take him into the vet as
soon as they open at 8am this morning (Sunday). I haven't seen him do either
in a day, and he's now limping around and growling and crying.... and hiding
under the bed... :(

I hope he's going to be ok...

Carrie

PS. I feel like a bad cat mommy for not taking him yesterday when i noticed
he wasn't going to the bathroom...

I just thank god that Casey is a whiney cat...if he wasn't so vocal about
everything, like the fact that he's in pain, I might not have noticed as
quickly...

Purrs and purr-ayers on the way for both him and you to feel better ASAP.

I don't blame you for observing him on Saturday. Now you've made sure of
what the symptoms are, and the vet has Sunday hours so you can bring him
in early.

Here are some extra purrs that the vet has an easy time correcting the
symptoms, so Casey is back to his regular self in no time.

Sorry to be blunt, but this is an emergency.  It could kill him.  He should
see a doctor as soon as possible.
It is Sunday morning here as I write this.  You are doing the right thing if
you have him at the vets now.
I hope everything turns out O.K.

Don't feel bad.  I missed it when Percy was dying of kidney failure - I just
had never dealt with that in a cat and didn't know what to look for.

Purrs that Casey gets well soon.

Carrie, it's probably urinary or kidney stones.  Let us know what's up ASAP
when you get him to the vet because this can be potentially very serious.
Or, he's got indigestion?

Ok, I just got back from the vet.

Casey is still there.

He did have a blockage of some sort pertaining to his bladder. They're not
going to be sure what it is until they do the cather and xray and stuff to
see if it was stones or what it was.

I'm just about to leave again to go to fax my paystub, as I have to apply
for a "medicard" to help pay for the vet, as it could be over $1000 by the
time it's all said and done.

But I can't lose my baby without a fight.

I'm very happy about the vet though, they were very very good. I would
recommend them to anybody in Toronto. (Royal York Animal Hospital -
www.ryah.ca)

More purrs please that Casey makes it through this ok and is back home with
his ever-loving mommy.

I'll update again when I know more.

Thanks for the purrs, he's felt them I'm sure.

I'm not sure of the name of the specific vet that was looking after Casey,
as there are a few that work in the clinic where I took him.

Anything, anything at all, inculding the purrs help more than you could
know.

I went to visit Casey for a few mins tonight. Poor thing is pretty hurtin'
looking right now. He's got a collar on so he can't pull out his catheter,
and he's got a soft cast around his front paw so he can't take the iv out of
his arm (iv fluids).

The vet said that they were going to take the catheter out tonight (24 hours
in, that's not too bad?), and that they would leave a litterbox and hope
that there's some clumps in the morning, and if there's not, then they will
try massaging his bladder to give it push towards working again.

So, they told me to call after I get to work tomorrow to see how he's doing
in the morning. They'll have had time to check him out by then and know
what's going on. If all goes really well ((crossing fingers)), Casey will
get to come home tomorrow night. On a new prescription diet! Wheeee! If not
tomorrow night, then hopefully Wednesday. He will also get another blood
test and urinalysis tomorrow later in the day to check everything. Hopefully
his renal vaules come down some as they were elevated yesterday (BUN and
creatnine (sp?)), but the vet said that they weren't horribly high, just
higher than normal, and that she hoped the flushing out of his bladder and
kidneys that they did will bring those down.

Anyway, I will let you all know what's going on tomorrow after work. Maybe,
if I'm lucky, I'll have Casey sitting here beside me when I write it.

Good news. Even if he comes home, he will maybe act uncomfortable as his
little tissues will be swollen from the catheter. When Grant came home I
took him back because he kept going in the box. They gave him a shot of
torpsomething or another for pain. Then he was drowsy. He also had
Ametryptiline for a few days to help with both destressing and anti
inflamatory properties. Keep us posted. Healing purrs still coming.

My American friend Bob, he of http://www.enslavedbyducks.com
sent me $20 cash last week.  It was a total misunderstanding.  A chapter of
his book was in the English version of Readers Digest and he thought he had
to send postage for me to send it to him!
Not so.
So I had this money,  American stuff.   To be quite honest, it doesn't look
like *real* money.  LOL.
So it's on its way to Canada to go towards Casey's bill.  They can exchange
the money themselves.
The cost of converting A dollars into C dollars and then sending them from
England would wipe out the donation.  I told the hospital that.
They will get cash in the post, envelope sealed with tape, and addressed
"only to be opened by office manager" I have her name.

Persia had to have surgery due to crystal oxolate stones in her bladder last
year.  She came through with flying colours.  I know if Marble has similar

Still more purrs coming.  I was out of town (Persia was being boarded) when
the vet called me (on a Friday NIGHT!) to ask if he could do an X-ray since
it was her 3rd UTI in 6 months.  I was still out of town the next day when
he gave me the results and asked approval for her surgery.  Of course I was
worried sick but he kept me constantly updated.  She's just fine, but she
does have to eat special food.  And they arranged a payment plan for me.  We
don't have a medicard for vet bills down here and many vets won't even
accept pet insurance (which I find weird).

Casey will be fine; I feel it in my bones.

Please DO keep us posted. Wow. That is a neat idea about having a Medicard
for the vet. I wish more vets had some sort of system. Purrs that the
catheter and a diet change do the trick.

didn't have that much money up front, but, will be able to manage paying it

Best wishes for Casey to have a rapid and complete receovery and for the vet
bill to not be too much.

What is a medicard to help pay vet bills?  That is interesting.
Annie
Carrie-Lou Salter - 06 Feb 2005 20:02 GMT
Thanks for the good wishes Annie.

The medicard is basically like a credit card/loan from what I can tell, that
another company finances you, and pays the full bill (minus the large depost
I put on before I left today), and then I get to pay the bill back in
payments.

Now you may not believe this, but my friend in Michigan misunderstood
something I said a few days ago.  Anyway, not to go into too many details
about it, he sent me a 20 dollar American bill.  It looks like funny money
to me!  I don't want it, so I have emailed your vet - I know you are in
Canada - to ask them if they will accept this $20 towards Casey's treatment.
If so, I will send it to them in the mail.
Oh, yes, I know I could have taken it to my bank and exchanged it for
English pounds towards the postage on the book I want to send to Bob.  But
hey!  Now I've eventually got back to work, I can afford to send Bob the
book he wants, and I've asked him and he doesn't want the money back.
So I have a $20 dollar bill that I can't do anything with.  If your vet will
agree to have American money, please accept this towards Casey's treatment
and I will mail it to them if they say yes, and you don't mind.
One day I might need help myself.

Purrs that he soon recovers.

That is very sweet Christina, I totally believe in positive karma (and I'm
not a flower child or anything....hehehe...no offense to anybody)... I
helped out others when I could. Ever seen the movie "pay it forward"?

That movie touched me very deeply. Especially the ending. That song
still haunts me and has a special meaning for me.

I also believe in helping when possible. When people here pull
together to accomplish something, whether it be helping to save a
precious cat, or help one of us out of a bind, or send love, its very
heartwarming.

I have never seen the movie, so I'm not going to worry about it.  I mailed
the hospital and heard back from them today.  They were so sweet, they said
they would tell Casey he got an email!

So my small donation will help towards the huge vets bill.  Every little

Glad to hear the boy is being looked at by
the vet. Blockages are easily remedied. My
Jazz has had 2 incidents, both necessitating
hospitalization. Hope he comes through without
much ado, you are a good meowmie.

My parents have had two cats who have had crystals and subsequent
urinary tract blockage, and my Tripper had the same not too long ago.
All have been cured and controlled.

We'll keep up the purrs and good healing thoughts!

Yes indeed!  Lots more purrs coming that Casey has only a minor,
treatable blockage.

Many purrs coming your way.... If it's stones, many times a special
diet will do the trick, I'm told.  We'll be keeping you and Casey in
our purrs and prayers.  Keep us informed!

I didn't see your original post until the same time as I'm reading this
update; I'm glad you got him to the vet on time, and we're sending
full-recovery purrs his way.

Late purrs for Casey and I hope he's much better by now. Don't feel
like a bad mommy for this. It's something learned by the best and
you just don't expect something like that to happen.

Sending best wishes and comforting purrs for you both.

Healing purrs to Casey. Thank god you got him to the vet on time. The first
time this happened to my baby I was shocked to learn how quickly this can
be fatal. My boy recovered just fine and I'm sure yours will too. He'll
need alot of special care when he gets home. Purrs to you and your baby
from Noel and Belle.
