Cheetah Week

I saw a lot of cheetahs around this past week.  No, Not running around
me (unfortunately) but on TV-- a lot!
First of all there are the four cheetah cubs at the National Zoo.

Then there was the lovely cheetah that visited
Jay Leno on the 'Tonight Show" one evening.  He was incredibly
composed-- and purring-- loudly. ;)

I sometimes watch "Dogs with Jobs" on the National Geographic
channel-- and one of the dogs, a sweet-tempered Doberman girl was-- a
*cheetah nanny.*  It was at a big cat refuge in Canada, and the
Doberman enjoyed babysitting for cheetah cubs, and helping socialize
them.

Finally, on Nat Geo, I saw a program all about a big family of
cheetahs on the Serengeti.  There was a mom and six big cubs, over a
year old, about full-grown, but not ready to be on their own yet.  THe
most extraordinary thing was that the cats seemed to go crazy for  the
filmmaker's van.  It was as if some kind of portable hill had rolled
into their territory-- first one, then practically all of the curious
cubs were climbing and crawling all over the thing, making themselves
at home on it.  To clinch the deal, one cheeky boy peed right down the
windshield-- this is OUR Territory!!!  Until the end of the filming,
apparently, the family greeted the van with great enthusiasm, and even
used it as a viewing stand to spot prey and inititiate a couple of
hunts.

They've had the baby cheetahs on a web cam since they were born. I
heard that today was the first day that they were "open to the
public". And a lovely day it was too!  Got into the mid 50Fs. :)

They are so cute!  Yes, it's live.  Mama cheetah wanted to use the "sandbox"
but she had kits climbing all over her!  I can just hear her: "Dammit, can't
I get any privacy at all?"  LOL  She finally just now decided to lay down
(in the sand).  How would you like to have to scoop *that* litterbox? :D

Oh, and when I was watching before they decided to snooze, the little cubs
all had the zoomies.  Mom must be one tired cheetah!

You can see their bright little "headlights" as they look toward the
camera.

There are  cheetahs in the Bronx Zoo.  They have an enormous
enclosure.  When you go in the early morning, when it's still cool,
and the cheetahs are just awake, and feeling feisty--  they're just a
blur. ;)

cute!
