My mangey cat

"William" is about 5 years old and he's just your typical gray mangey,
flea ridden cat (that's what my grandpa called them) that has swollen
front foot pads. I did a search on the topic and others have mentioned
it but wondered if anyone had come up with a solution.  The pads are
soft and mushy like they are filled with fluid.  The cat is entirely
healthy otherwise as near as I can tell.  They bother him too,
sometimes when he is eating he will actually stand on his front knees
and tuck his feet under him.  I took him to the vet but the vet said
"he had never seen anything like it".  Any suggestions?

Thank you!!

Take him to another vet, first of all.  It could be an allergy, he could
have been bitten or stung by an insect, or it could be a symptom of a
disease like fluid retention from kidney failure.  How old is he, is he
indoor only, has his diet changed?  What tests did the vet do?

Hugs,

Something similar was discussed on the health+behavior newsgroup, and I think
the cat had a condition called "pillow foot."  That might be a start.

A vet who can't do anything but say, "Gee, never seen that" isn't much of a
vet =/

Yep, I'd have to say go to another vet, especially if William is trying to
stay off the pads of his feet.  Discomfort without a diagnosis is never a
good thing.

I'd agree. Is the swelling purely in the pads, not the soft tissue of
the lower leg, or the lower joints?

I'd definitely go to a different veterinarian.

You might be able to check and see if there's a cats-only vet's office in
your area. They might have more experience with some of the lesser-known
cat ailments.

I hope you can get some help for the poor little guy. Keep us posted.

He has probably had the problem with his pads for two years at least.
He spends all day outside underneath the neighbors shrubs, he's very
shy.  At night I call him and he comes running in to sleep on the bed.
He's a wonderful cat, very gentle, happy, and never causes any
problems.  I feed him dry cat food which he seems to enjoy. His front
pads are the only thing swollen.  The pads feel like they are filled
with water, they are that soft.

He really needs to see another vet who can help him.
Is there another you can see?

Yeah, find another vet!  :-)  Sounds to me as though you
have a vet who doesn't want to be bothered with anything
that might be complicated, he just wants to collect his fees
for the routine stuff.

Having seen a post or two in this thread about a condition called "Pillow
Foot", I thought I'd google the term and see what came up.

Here is a site with a description and also a photo of an affected cat's
paw pads:

Does this look or sound like what your kitty is going through?

If it does, make sure to mention it to the NEW vet you go to. To heck with
the previous one that offered no assistance.

he couldn't be bothered to treat the cat

Another vet.

And how about doing something about those fleas?

You guys are wonderful, thank you for trying to help.  I was just
kidding about the "mangey a flea-ridden" part, he's totally healthy
other than his paws.  I went to the link and looked at the other cats
paws with "pillow foot" and it kind of looks like that but not
exactly...it might mostly have to do tho with the fact that my cats
pads are black.  Only the center pad, the big one in the middle is
swollen and when I looked last night they were bigger than ever, half
the size of a golfball. If you push on them he doesn't scream or
anything but you can tell he doesn't really like it.  It's weird
because they are so mushy they feel like a ziploc sandwich bag filled
with water, odd.

I will take him to the "other vet", we only have two in my small town
and mention the "pillow foot" to him and see what he says.  Thank you
again to all that tried to help!
