Who needs a ventriloquist's dummy when you've got this supersmart
african grey parrot for a pet?

I was just amazed by this bird, what a cutie!!

I love it!!!  I had a dream last night I had a talking marmoset - don't ask
me where that came from!

As long as it wasn't a peeing marmoset, like the one who went down in
history on Johnny Carson's head. ;)

After seeing this video (linked from somewhere else) yesterday, I saw the show
for the first time last night.  I like the fact that judges place a high
priority on seeing an emotional/trust bond with the pet and on actual
training, as opposed to something the pet does naturally that's just cute.
Basically, it seems like they have good priorities and are promoting
responsible, loving pet ownership.

The dog Kira last night was awesome.  She was trained to pick up objects
by name, to carry heavy objects while walking on her hind legs, and she
even walked up stairs on her hind legs.  She and her owner obviously
have a great relationship, and he is keeping her mind active.  I found
myself wanting to call up the guy and ask him what techniques he used to
train her.  The host (do I recognize him from Saved by the Bell?) even
made a point of asking about how assertive one needs to be to own that
breed of dog.

I'm generally skeptical of "stupid pet tricks" shows, but these aren't stupid
and it's clear the show has pet-positive priorities.

Speaking of the recent marmot-based festivities, I once saw a trained
groundhog on this show.  Unbelievable.

oh my god, that was hilarious! What a wonderful
bird. IF that lady trained it she did a great
job. Really worth seeing.

I would *LOVE* to have one of these guys. Bred in the US, of course, not
taken from nature. But Tom won't let me have a bird. :(
Or a ferret. Or a snake. Or more cats. :( :( :(

Awwww, poor baby!  Tom only let's him have *SEVEN* cats and a huge fish
tank, the big meanie!!!  ;>

Kidding aside, I'd like to have a ferret too - they get along great with
cats, can use a litter box, and are very playful - I had a friend who had
two.

Hugs,

It's moot for me, since ferrets are not legal in California [stupid,
IMO, and I think this asylum is the only state around with that
restriction], but am I correct in thinking that a ferret would not be
a good bet in a household that includes a bird?

Poor Victor being limited to only 7 cats. You'd be happy in Joannes household.
Only one cat currently but a family of hamsters, a sugarglider (plus another
one soon), chickens, 2 geese, and two d*gs.

How about a hamster? A rat? A dog? :-)

A gal on one of my horseracing lists has an 8 month old African Grey parrot
like the one in the video. She has already learned to call her Mommy because
that is how the gal refers to herself in conversation! (no kids, so the bird
doesn't see anyone to mimic.) Isn't that cute! We fell into conversation
because I told her how I scared Grant yesterday yelling at a particularly
exciting race. She says when she is screaming at the tv at a race, the
cockatiel dances and the African Grey joins her :)

OMG, tell her to watch out for conspiracies.  African Greys are so
smart it's unreal. ;)

I know birds like that mimic, but how do you get one to do something that
*isn't* mimicking when you give it a cue?  Like the word "owl" makes it go
"whoo, whoo, whoo" rather than saying "owl" or "spaceship" makes it sound
like something from a Star Trek film?  That must take a LOT of patience and
training.  I love this bird!

African Greys are super smart, and parrots in general are very
intelligent birds.  It's been pretty well-established that they can
reason, and they're not just "parroting" as we believed for a long
time.

Here's Alex, an African Grey known and studied for his amazing smarts:

Wasn't it great?  I had to send that link to my brother. They have a
bird and are starting to get really into what tricks he can learn.
He's a cockatiel so probably won't be doing tricks like this one, but
his tricks are still pretty impressive.

I was amazed by this bird too, so I sent the clip to my friend Bob who is
crazy enough to have more than one parrot.
He says he knows the bird and it's name is Einstein ;-)
