Monique Y. Mudama - 03 Feb 2005 20:40 GMT So, I'm looking at cat trees online, even though shipping costs an arm and a leg, because the trees I've seen locally haven't impressed me. It makes me nervous, though, because I hate to spend a few hundred bucks on a cat tree that Oscar might ignore completely.
Anyway, I'm assembling a list of trees that are noteworthy. I can't afford many of them. I don't even necessarily like some of them, but they're so over the top they're worth mentioning.
I'd love to see the craziest or coolest cat trees you guys have found, too.
This is the one that gets my "most likely to buy" vote. I like that it's wide as well as tall: http://www.catsplay.com/kcud_64.php3
These have the advantage of being *really* tall: http://www.catsplay.com/deluxe_open_cube.php3
This one looks like a playhouse for cats: http://www.playtimeworkshop.com/sleepy_hollow.htm
This one is just over the top crazy. I like the way they make their ledges, though: http://www.playtimeworkshop.com/Jungle%20Gyms.htm
Kinda cool .. nothing original, though, and rather expensive: http://www.angelicalcat.com/products/wcp2-cp.shtml
Ummmm. Not for me. http://www.sittingprettykitty.com/cattrees.html
Short, simple, but I like it: http://www.catsplay.com/kcud_66.php3
Wow. Now this is cool, especially for smaller living spaces: http://www.katwallks.com/Six-piece%20corner%20suite.jpg
Neat, but way too expensive: http://www.catworldusa.com/4t.php
I'm a fan of this style, but the really tall ones always seem to be expensive: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=865&D=furniture&Nt k=All&Nty=1&Ntt=furniture&ref=2050&Dx=mode+matchallany&Ntx=mode+matchallany&Np=1 &subref=AB&N=2002 or http://tinyurl.com/63kk4
These all look pretty neat. I may have to consider them. Good prices, too: http://www.lovethatcat.com/cat-furniture.html
This one has a swing! http://www.7thheavencatfurniture.com/ikorb.php?func=catalog&category_id=2&produc t_id=27
*sigh* as usual, shopping is more fun than buying.

Christine Burel - 03 Feb 2005 21:01 GMT Monique, I can't wait to start checking your links out but I thought I'd mention that one of the best cat trees I have (I have 4 and one I sort of built) was from Petsmart -- It's called the Caterpillar (company that makes it is "Cats Are In") and runs about $154 -- very sturdy, very well-made with sisal rope scratching areas and a tunnel, too! I also bot a really nice one (that was a promotion) from Petsmart by North American Pet Co. Christine

Not expensive at all, and definitely a good thought. Eric said we should try the pet grass thing before springing for a tree (to distract Oscar from counters). Well, Oscar adores the pet grass, but apparently considers it an appetizer. As soon as we get ready for bed, she jumps up on the counter and feasts on the plants =/
So maybe he'll change his mind ...

Yeah, I saw these! I don't think I'd want bark shedding in my house -- it's messy enough as is -- but definitely a cool idea.
Reminds me of an old family friend and builder. He couldn't bear to cut down a huge old tree on his property to build his house, so he built the house around the tree! When it turned out it was infested with termites and died, well, that was a bummer. You can also imagine he had a lot of trouble finding a buyer when he wanted to move.

Here in Helsinki, we have an old restaurant (est. 1827) that is built around a tree. The building itself is partially round.

I wish we had an enclosed porch, but it wouldn't make sense for us, and would look really weird on our house =P
My parents have a sunroom that, while glassed rather than screened, would make an awesome observatory for cats. Unfortunately, they have no pets and just use it to read and have breakfast while watching the hummingbirds, frogs, and various other wildlife do their thing.

Mudama - 06 Feb 2005 07:39 GMT Well, for some reason DH has relented and is in agreement that a cat tree is a good idea! I've gotten more hooked on the idea since watching Oscar think about jumping up on the counter some more ... I realized there's nowhere in the house where she can really climb or jump. The tallest surface on which she's allowed are the couches. Now that she's rediscovered climbing, I'd like to give her the opportunity to do so in "legal" ways.
On closer inspection, the one I liked ( http://www.catsplay.com/kcud_64.php3 ) is a bit short ...
But I think I've narrowed it down to two:
http://www.lovethatcat.com/cat-tree-3.html (Note Holly and Duffy as models)
and
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3129
The fact that shipping makes the H&D tree $100 more expensive than the Drs. F&S one strongly encourages me toward the latter. I also like the multiple (presumably 4?) sisal posts at the base of the F&S one.
I just wish I could know in advance that Oscar will like any of these. I'd hate to waste this kind of money!

Ooh, this hadn't occured to me. Then again, I was thinking of this as a perch more than a scratching post. Oscar already has three scratching posts, spoiled kitty that she is. And hey, as long as they keep her from scratching other tempting surfaces, I'm happy to have them!

It doesn't have to be huge or exhorbitantly priced, but a nice one for 140.00 will last for years, give Oscar a new thrill and high place to be and be entertaining for you too. They are attractive as any piece of furniture and she won't "get tired" of it or ask for a new color in a couple of years. All in all it is a bargain and will improve everyone's life. That's a pretty good something to get for $140 bucks.

Gabey8 - 04 Feb 2005 17:05 GMT Some of those cat trees are really neat!
I have one requirement of any kitty furniture that we get, should we splurge and invest in a really big item like some of these. Because I've read that one aspect of being an Alpha Cat is who's allowed to go to how high of a perch, I don't want any cat furniture to be taller than my head. I seem to recall that there's a reason why the dominant feline is the "top cat", and I don't want to undermine my own status as the Alpha Feline in the family. ;o)
Donna -- of course, spoiling the living heck out of the cats probably doesn't help matters, either ;o)

I was thinking Oscar would like a very tall perch best, but this aspect never occured to me ....
Is this why she likes to lie down on the back of the couch when I'm lying down on it? To get some height advantage?
> Donna -- of course, spoiling the living heck out of the cats probably > doesn't help matters, either ;o) Yeah, I think they know who's in charge, with or without the extra height.

Persia was already a mature cat when she adopted me so I bought her a simple cradle with a barrel, no more than 3 feet tall. She leaps from the sofa to the cradle and lounges there (often doing upside downy head). She she wants to play she gets in the barrel (which has a hole in the side) and starts poking at mousies on the floor. Then, of course, she gets the zoomies and charges out of the barrel and onto the floor or the couch. I suppose with multiple cats or a really young one tall climbing places are a good idea. Persia doesn't climb very high and never has.

Well, Oscar climbed as a kitten, but she was always climbing non-kitten friendly things (like Christmas lights), so I convinced her not to do so. I think she'll like the opportunity to climb and jump on a "legal" surface. I hope. The one I ended up choosing is just over 5' tall, but she can always choose to hang out on the lower ledges.

I built this one for Vino a couple of years ago: http://tinyurl.com/6gt3v Also click on the following 3 pictures, they also show it a bit. I did most of it by myself, although Dennis helped with the wrapping of the sisal rope around the log. I attatched it to the ceiling so that it couldn't be knocked over by leaping on it. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! I am *very* pleased with it,and the cats love it! It is extremely well-made, so heavy that it cannot topple, and shipping is included in the basic price. If you go to their web site, you can "build your own" on the site and instantly see the final price. I got very fast service and think this cat tree was well worth the cost
Here are two pictures -- one of Duffy turning at the top of one of the poles to the cat tree, and one of Holly and Duffy playing on the cat tree. http://pic10.picturetrail.com/VOL320/476350/1916528/34609976.jpg http://pic10.picturetrail.com/VOL320/476350/1916528/24118497.jpg
Here is an "album" of Duffy and Holly pictures. If you scroll down, you can see some pictures that include full-length pictures of the cat tree.
