Kreisleriana - 02 Feb 2005 16:00 GMT Anyone hear what your local groundhog had to report about the weather for the next few weeks?

Karen - 02 Feb 2005 16:14 GMT I saw Puxatauny Phil this a.m. (it was pretty funny. the proclamation is VERY long and the guy on CBS didn't realize how long it would be) but the verdict was 6 more weeks of winter. Of course here in NE, we have Undilla Bill. But I think he saw his shadow too. It was foggy early but sunny as heck now.

There used to be a groundhog (or woodchuck as we call them in NY) in the Central Park Zoo named Madison Avenue Gladys. She was very friendly and would just walk around on nice days, and of course, she would beg for food. She got to be perfectly spherical, like a round, furry brown beachball with beady eyes and buck teeth. A lot of people didn't even know what kind of animal she was, as she cheerfully hit them up for their popcorn. We always thought it was kind of appropriate that down in PA, there was the pampered groundhog, and here in NYC, we had this wandering pandhandler groundhog. ;)

LOL! My friends took a vacation in the western US last year, and they got a picture of a squirrel who fit this description. I have never seen such a fat squirrel in my entire life! Either it was about to give birth (within minutes) to about 25 babies, or it'd been eating VERY well thanks to tourists' handouts.
Given that it wasn't a time of year when I'd have expected a squirrel to be carrying a litter, my money's on the "squirrel got fat while mooching food from tourists" theory. :o)
Donna
Gabey8 - 02 Feb 2005 17:25 GMT I live in southeastern Pennsylvania, on the other end of the state from the famed Punxsutawney Phil. Phil has seen his shadow today, so Western PA is getting 6 more weeks of winter.
I suppose if they're getting winter, so are we, since nearly all the weather patterns we get hit the western part of the state before coming here.
Though I'd welcome a second opinion from any groundhogs that might live, say, at the Philadelphia Zoo. That's closer to home, so they might have an alternate weather report for this region. ;o)
Actually, it's nice and bright and sunny here today, so I suspect that any prognosticating groundhogs around here would see their shadows, too.

For those of our international friends who think the US Americans have all gone round the bend, the reference is to a folk tale that if the groundhog comes out of his hole and sees his shadow (ie: it's a sunny day), there'll be six more weeks of winter. If it's overcast and no shadow is to be seen, it's supposed to be a sign of an early spring.
We are all nuts, but all this talk of groundhogs is not a symptom. Since Bill Murray made that excellent movie, "Groundhog Day", I suppose this article is superfluous, but I thought I'd reassure you.

I don't know if it's very well known in the rest of the world. I don't think we even have groundhogs. They are probably indigenous to the Americas.
