Tanada - 02 Feb 2005 13:33 GMT If my posts seem a little short, poorly spelled, or absent for a while, blame it on me. Like an idiot I got between Tanada and Merlin in a cat fight and Merlin bit my hand. He didn't mean to do it and is just starting to get over the embarrassment. The incident happened a couple of days ago, and I think I'm at the worst part of the effects now. I knew I shouldn't have gotten into it, but it was the computer screen they were battling over, and I don't want to lose a perfectly good new screen. Ok, enough excuses.
Anyway, my hand is red and swollen, my fingers hurt when I stand up, or mover them into a new position, and I'm living on tylenol and neosporan ointment. I promised Rob that I'll go to the emergency room if it gets any worse. I just hope that merlin forgives me and is over the trauma soon.

Holly - 02 Feb 2005 14:11 GMT Poor Pam sounds like an infection going on. Purrs from the crew that you feel better soon and Purrs for Merlin to forgive you.

I think you should see a doctor - puncture wounds can be nasty, and if your hand is already badly swollen, there's an infection.
Betsy bit TED during her last visit, hard enough to draw blood, but I don't think she's forgiven the TED. It was probably an oversight, anyway, Betsy isn't really aggressive and never (ok almost never) bites hard. But TED can get her own antibiotics and you can't.

If your hand is swollen and that painful, go see the doctor. Infected cat bites can be nasty. A friend of mine's cat bit her hand, and because she didn't take it seriously at first, she ended up in the emergency room on an IV drip. She's okay now, but it took a while for her to get full mobility back in her thumb.
I'm sure Merlin will forgive you. He probably feels terrible about it, too. With all the expenses of life, defending something as costly as a new monitor is a valid reason to break up a cat fight, I think.

Plus, even if you don't get referred to the ER by the doctor, s/he might have some prescription meds to knock out any sort of infection sooner, rather than later. Anything that clears up the problem more quickly is a good thing.
Feel better!

Christine Burel - 02 Feb 2005 17:20 GMT Pam, don't mess with the cat bite; go and get it looked at right away. You can get really bad infections and better to get it checked out before it gets to the point where you may have to go into the hospital. When Tucker bit me I went straight to urgent care within an hour -- they gave me strong antibiotics and told me if it I started getting red streaks to get to the E.R. The next day I went back into urgent care (didn't want to wait 8 hours in the E.R.) and asked them to recheck my arm (it had some red spots on it and they said "yep, it's streaking." so they gave me shots of Rocephin in the derrierre, one that day and one the next.). Please, get this checked out! Christine, sending purrs pronto!

A couple of years ago my cat fell off my lap and in doing so dug a rear claw into my leg and it tore downward. I gave myself first aid but did not even think to see a doctor. A few days later I came down with a horrible case of the flu. During this time the leg became painful, red and swollen. I'll cut this short -- after visits to 9 different doctors and many antibiotics: penicillin, ammoxicillin, augmentin, cipro, etc also cortisone ointments, 17 months later I was finally OK. This was a very expensive, painful lesson. Purrs that you will heed the advice and get help. MLB
Holly - 02 Feb 2005 19:40 GMT Pam, I was wondering is the new kitties have arrived? And how everyone is doing?
Tanada - 04 Feb 2005 19:58 GMT > Pam, I was wondering is the new kitties have arrived? And how everyone > is doing? Ok, I was looking for a good place to butt in and update everyone's conditions.
Thank you all for the purrs and so forth. My hand is almost back to normal size, can be used now, and doesn't hurt nearly as much as it did. I'm still using neosporin ointment and Band-Aids, and they seem to be working well. The bite rash has retreated to the back of my hand and we have not had any infection to squeeze out of it since yesterday morning.
Sonya is STILL pregnant. She took over Mandy's bed yesterday, but tried several times to get out of the room to find her own nesting spot. Huey is sleeping in front of Mandy's bedroom door. As most of you know, he's our most sensitive nurse cat. He stopped insisting on taking care of me two nights ago, so I figure that I'm going to live. Huey just KNOWS who needs him. Sonya is a sweetie. She felt grouchy yesterday, but only slapped Mandy's hand (no claws) when Mandy tried to pet her. That is a lot of self control. I'm still saying Feb. 8th for the kittens since that is Mandy's purrday. Rob likes that one, but says Super bowl Sunday works for him too. All guesses still accepted.
The rest of the crew are doing fine. Everyone has received Jim's idea of a gift for my teen aged homicidal maniac with a mixture of disbelief and dismay. Jim bought her two Japanese Katana swords. If she goes PMStal one night and slays us in our beds, I want you to know that Jim is an accomplice before the fact. We played safe, and bought her a DVD player.
Thanks again for all the purrs and good wishes,
Pam S.

Turned in to cellulitis, and I had to go for antibiotic shots. Probably best to not wait too long. I waited a few days, and shouldn't have. I started running a low fever, and had those nifty little red lines running out from the swollen area. Dumb me. I've been bitten and clawed before, and washed it out with the same vigor as those, but didn't keep a good watch on it.
I still can't recall whether the little fuzz head bit me or got a claw in to me deeply. My fault...I *was* messing with him, and not watching the warning signs properly. He looked quite perturbed after I pulled away, and spent a lot of the rest of the night sitting next to me and purring.
When I had trouble putting on my elbow pads for roller blading, it got my attention.....
Best to get it looked at, especially if it's swollen and red....

I'm going to repeat what everyone else has advised--please see a doctor quickly!!
(Because my immune system is compromised (diabetes) I've been advised by my physician to go to the ER ASAP after a deep cat-bite due to the high probabilty of developing a pastuerella infection...it can be treated if caught early with antibiotics such as augmentin, penicillin, cipro, etc.)
I, like Christopher, once had a NASTY cellulitis infection and I nearly ended up hospitalized for IV drug treatment by waiting too long for treatment.
Best wishes and many, many healing purrs!! Gennie

Like an idiot I got between Tanada and Merlin in a cat [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > > Pam S. Sorry, Pam, but go to the ER. Hand infections, even in the early stages, can spread explosively -- and there are too many delicate structures in the hand that can't take much damage. Cat bites are more prone to infection than dog bites, although you might feel better knowing that human bites are FAR worse.
The risk is sufficient that many emergency physicians, and I'm conservative about giving antibiotics for prevention, very reasonably will start a course of antibiotics simply when they see a cat bite. If it's gone to the red and swollen phase, and perhaps feels hot to the touch, you probably need at least a starting dose of injected antibiotics, or a heavy oral dose. Typically, it's prudent to give most drugs (e.g., Clavamox -- mixed amoxicillin and clavulanic acid) for 10-14 days, and then reevaluate. Other combinations would be used if you are penicillin-allergic. Trust a local physician -- there are geographic variations in the best choice.
You really don't want this to get to the stage where it needs surgical drainage--and that can happen suddenly in the hand.

Soak it in heavily salted water, hot as you can stand, twice a day. Get yourself some Astragulus tincture & take it as instructed on the lable. Drink gallons of red clover tea & try to find some Bee Propolis to apply between salt soakings.... This is the herbal method, otherwise I agree with most others: See a doctor.

also, I'd urge you to go ahead and at least call your doctor. Like others have already said, it sounds like you already have an infection going on, and my guess would be that an antibiotic is needed. Neosporin is good for scrapes, but I wouldn't think it would do for a puncture wound.

Neosporin simply will not penetrate.
Part of the reason for concern about hand infections is that there are lots of "compartments" in the hand. For example, carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the "wrapper" or "compartment" around a tendon won't "give" when the tendon inside swells. The pressure from that then presses on the median nerve.
When you have infection that gets into a tendon or nerve sheath, there is no place for the pus to go. That increases pressure and can cut off blood supply to things downstream of the infection. At that point, you may need surgical drainage of the sheath, sometimes on an emergency basis.
polonca12000 - 03 Feb 2005 11:14 GMT Please go see a doctor, Pam, this could be serious! Purrs,

From your description of your hand, if you wait much longer you may very well end up in the hospital. Don't risk it. Cat bites are *very* serious, and I know this first hand. You need medical attention *immediately.*

Like an idiot I got between Tanada and Merlin in a cat [quoted text clipped - 11 lines] > >Pam S. Cat bites and scratches can be very bad. But a lot depends on your immune system and the nature of the wound. If the bite is a deep puncture, Neosporin can seal it from drainage to cause a deep infection. You might try soaking it in very hot water with Epsom Salts for 10 minutes or so and then squeezing to bring up any pus. Then clean, anoint, and bandage till the next day and repeat. That is what the doctor told me to do when i got a nasty piece of wood jammed deep into my toe. The wood eventually popped out sparkling clean from my white blood cells. i have a good immune system. I just saw this. Please see a doctor if there is any sign of infection at. Cat bites can be very nasty, and it is better to take precautions than to go through a major injection. Wonderful as they are, our kitties have a mouthful of bacteria.
