A couple of cat-related questions

Even though I've been a Meowmy for a long time, 28 of my 41 years, during
nearly all that amount of time I've only had three cats. In the past 12
days since I brought my current pair of kitties home, I'm seeing a couple
of new things that I haven't encountered before. I have some questions
that I'd like to post on here so I can draw on the much wider experience
of the group's posters.

For example: Captain and Stanley both have pretty little PINK noses. Ditto
for some or all of their paw pads, depending on which cat you're referring
to. My previous felines were either grey (blue) or black; they all had
much darker noses and paw pads than the boys I've got now. So what I've
observed about the boys' noses and paws isn't something that was visible
on my previous felines. To wit: is it normal for a kitty's pink nose to
get flushed and look even MORE pink after he's been playing "chase the
fishing-pole-toy" for a while? How about their paw pads after they've been
chasing said toy around on the carpeted living room floor? Do their pink
paw pads get "flushed" looking, too?

Also Captain is displaying a behavior that I've never seen in a cat
before. When he gets hold of said fishing-pole-toy item, he'll play tug of
war with me and growl. I've seen a lot of D-pets play like that, but
seeing a CAT do this is new to me. It has crossed my mind to wonder if he
might have had a canine playmate in his early days. Of course, Captain
DOES combine this behavior with trying to carry the toy away, with body
language that looks like a leopard trying to abscond up a tree with its
prey. So even if Captain learned the tug-of-war game from D-pets somewhere
along the line, he hasn't forgotten his feline roots entirely. ;o) But I'm
wondering if anyone else has seen a cat play in this way.

These are just a couple of things I've noticed in the days since Captain
and Stanley joined the family. I'm sure that plenty of people here can let
me know if they've seen other cats do these things, too. :o)

Yes, that is totally normal.  Vino's a dilute orange and he's "all
pink inside".  Pink nose, lips, pawpads.  The pink can vary from quite
pale to a real barbie pink.  I think it's so cute when he's all
flushed and excited :-)

Can't help with the pinkness question, but Sammy plays the same way
with the pole toy. She puts on a real acrobatic act chasing it, but
once she's caught it she insists on dragging it away. After a few
minutes she drags it back for another chase/acrobatic act.

Amigo had a deeper pink nose, but it definitely would get a deep rose flush
when he got wild and playful. It's adorable.

The first time Grant ever got a fur mousie to play with he growled with it.
But he was young. Did do it after he got 'grown up'.

Definately, the color of the nose & paw pads is a good indicator of
'health'.  When Mimi was sick, her nose wasn't very dark at all, it was so
pale it was almost as white as her fur.  Now that she's better, it alsmost
glows, especially when chasing any kind of greebling!  Somtimes it's even a
darker pink when napping (on all the kitties that I have with the pink
noses/pads that I have), epending on whether they're sleeping or just
'resting their eyes'.  There's a similar thing with humans.  Mom always told
me as a kid to never wear colored nail polish when visiting a doctor, as
they can see the color underneath the nails and sometimes tell if there may
be other problems.  Low/high bloodpressure for instance.  I know when I'm
cold, my fingernails (actually, what you can see underneact the fingernails)
turns a bluish color.

Moe does this, too.  If I let go of the fuzzy-feather-snake, she will drag
it off.  I say she's just being greedy and not wanting to share the toy with
her siblings ;)

DOn't know about the paw pads, but for the Pinky Nosie-- DEFINITELY
YES.  Stinky's pinky nosie gets flushed when he's playing, or
sometimes even when he's being extra-lovey.  I love pinky nosies. ;)

Yes, Frank's pink nose sometimes turns crimson. I keep telling him he
doesn't have anything to blush about. ;o) It's not just when he's played
hard, sometimes it's when he is feeling cold (he gets a red nose like I
do), sometimes it gets flushed after he's been sleeping a long time.

Frankie is a member of the Pinky Nosie Club, too. ;)

Yes, Leonardo, my friend's cat would sieze the mouse on the end of his cat
fishin' pole and insist on dragging his "kill" away with him, even in the
middle of multiple cat play sessions.  Francesca and Nina also have moments
of acute possessiveness when they manage to get a hold on the tassle at the
end of their favorite toy.  Francesca's cutest action is picking up the
tassle and dragging the fishing pole toy over to me whenever she wants to
play. =o) I suspect she's a pretty smart girl, as cats go.

I'd say Captain and Stanley are exhibiting  all the normal behaviors of two
happy, vigorous cats who have had a stroke of good luck  with their new
hoomin. =o)

T.K.'s little nose is bright pink, too; it seems to stay that way most
of the time.  Jake's nose is also pink, but it goes from pale (just woke
up, all systems not functioning properly yet) to a nice warm pink (happy
 boy, playtime, or snuggling).

I may not have introduced T.K. yet; he's a blue tuxedo kitty (hence
T.K.; it was Fred before we got him), about 6 months old, and he joined
us a little over two weeks ago.  I think he's going to look a lot like
Duffy when he grows up.

Right now he's into EVERYTHING and on top of most of it.  The others
seem to like him; they all eat together without problems.  Jake plays
with him some, but not like he did with Seth the Fearless Fighter (RB).
I do worry about one thing; T.K. likes to suck on fabric, preferably
dark and furry, to soothe himself.  Would Feliway help with that, do you
think?  I have damp patches all over my Polartec shirt...

LOL.  No advice - Sammy sucks her toe, but only when she's sitting on or
next to me so I usually end up with t wet spot somewhere on me and her toe
is also quit soggy!   ;>

Hi Gabey

Late as usual I'm afraid, but just to confirm what others have said,
extra pink nose & paw-pads after exertion or when it's cold are quite
normal: IIRC it's a matter of increased blood-flow.

Growling when playing tug-o-war isn't unusual either, just another way
of letting you know "it's MINE".

You've got a lucky pair of normal well-adjusted darlings. Enjoy.

Yes - and if they are white cats, their ears flush pinker, too!

My little man, Sumo, when he was in his 'terrible twos' would do this.
I've got this cord I use as a cat toy and he would grip it in his
teeth and back up trying to pull it out of my hand.  He pulled so hard
that I was afraid he'd hurt himself, and I'd usually let him have some
slack or just relinquish the cord to him.  Since then, it's seemed
less important to him to 'win' the battle and we mostly just play.
Every now and then though, he'll still want to play tug-o-war.

Regards and Purrs,
O J
