Sunny the cockatiel has flown to the RB

I've mentioned several times that I have feathered family members as
well as the cats. The birds came first, the cats moved in several
years later. When I gave the birds clean water and  food this
afternoon both were fine. I went outside for about half an hour, and
when I came inside Sunny had died.

I  visited a local pet store when I returned from the first Gulf War,
thinking I'd get a parakeet since birds and fish were the only pets
allowed at the apartments where I was living. While looking around I
noticed that a cage had one lonely cockatiel inside, and no price. I
asked and was told that someone had returned her a couple days after
buying her because she was a vicious biter who drew blood. (BTW, she
never bit me, but was terrified whenever she saw brown gloves.) The
store owner was pretty upset - she had a broken wing from rough/proper
handling. To make a long story shorter, they ended up giving me Sunny,
though I did end up spending quite a bit on a cage, toys, etc.

She was very shy at first, but within a few days of coming home had
learned the up command to climb onto my finger. For several years the
first thing I did when I got home was open her cage. She followed me
from room to room, and became a semi-permanent fixture on my shoulder.
She was a very poor flier, since her wing healed crooked. She would
circle the room, getting lower and lower, but couldn't get enough lift
to take off and get higher.

For several years she was my only pet. Eventually, I bought a second
cockatiel to keep her company. Didn't exactly work out that way - she
never liked Tiger, the new bird. For several more years, Sunny would
be on my shoulder while Tiger sat on the back of the chair. Sunny
would throw a hissy fit whenever Tiger tried to get too close, but
tolerated Tiger in the cage without any real fighting.

Sunny, you'll be missed ;-(

I'm saddened to hear that, Steve.  I know how attached you can become
to birds, my friend Joe had one that he was very close to.  My usual
comment on a pet who has passed is, "May he find a peaceful path to
walk."  May Sunny find clear skies, bountiful fruit and nut trees, and
strong wings to fly with.

I'm sorry for your loss, Steve.  But you gave Sunny a loving home for many
years. I'm sure she loved you and trusted you.  I hope she's sitting on a
nice perch in the Summerland, surrounded by all the things that would make
Cockatiels happy while she waits for you.  (I'm afraid I know nothing about
birds, so I'll let your imagination fill in what those things would be.)
Give Sammy and Little Bit ear Scritches from me.

Yes, I remember about your cockatiels.  I'm very sorry for your loss, but I
hope it will comfort you to realise what lucky bird she was to live with
you. and I'm sure she lived out her allotted span because of your care.
May she fly straight to RB.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Comforting purrs and purr-ayers are en route.

I know Sunny will watch over you until you reunite with her at the RB. And
in the meantime, if there is another cockatiel in need of you, I have no
doubt that she'll see to it that you bring home a new feathered family
member.

I'm so glad you were able to give her such a wonderful life, one that she
wouldn't have had if you hadn't appeared on the scene when you did. Thanks
to you, she learned that humans can be kind and loving.

I'm sorry for your loss. :o(

Well, I have been thinking about getting another, especially since
Tiger seems so subdued now that her long time cagemate is gone.
Hopefully, if I do get another Tiger will welcome it and they'll be
friends instead of just barely tolerating each other like Sunny did
when I got Tiger.

PS:  How is Tiger taking losing Sunny?
Steve Touchstone - 02 Feb 2005 09:33 GMT
>PS:  How is Tiger taking losing Sunny?

She has really been subdued ;-( She's usually very vocal, but has been
quiet today. She's probably always been around other birds. She never
really bonded with me like Sunny, since Sunny had her convinced that I
was Her hoomin, and that Tiger was supposed to keep her distance.

I think I'll wait a few days and see if Tiger starts acting normal,
and if not I'll start looking for a hand raised 'tiel.
