Oscar's little adventure

It snowed last night, so a couple of inches of the white stuff cover our deck.
There's a wet-but-clear path right along the house, though.

Well, I opened the back door and encouraged Oscar to take a look.  The idea
was, she would take one step onto the soggy wet mat and retreat.  I could give
her the illusion of freedom without the actuality, at the same time reminding
her of how bad and nasty the Out is.  Clever me!

Of course, nothing of the sort happened.  For the first time ever, she took a
step onto a wet surface and ... kept going.  She slowly walked along the clear
path, and I quickly began to worry.  I was wearing socks; Eric was barefoot
and made it clear that if anyone chased down Oscar, it would be me.  (The last
time she explored the Out, she got to the edge of the deck, disappeared under
it, and wouldn't come back for a while, until suddenly she blazed back into
the house at the speed of light.  We think she must have seen a scary spider
=P )  Calling to Oscar had the expected result: no response whatsoever.  Then
Eric suggested treats.  Of course!  She always materializes from nowhere when
I shake the can of treats.  Except, apparently, when she's outside and can't
be bothered.  She's clearly considering jumping into the rose bushes, and from
there no doubt to the underside of the deck.  I shake the can even more
frantically and call "Oscar!  Oscar!" in my best attempt at a non-frantic
voice.  She ignores me.

And then, for no apparent reason, she turns around and, suddenly, she notices
the can.  The can I've been rattling all the while.  I see the part of her
brain dedicated to snacky things take control, and she trots in leisurely
fashion back into the house, where I reward her with catnip-laced goodies.

Damn cats.

When I first got Ike (RB) he was 9 years old and used to going out.  It
was winter and I hadn't let him out but he did meow at the door
frequently.  This night it was snowing with about 6 inches on the
ground.  I thought I would show him how nasty it was out there so I
opened the door and out he went - down the driveway following the tracks
made by the car.  I was frantic.  I had only had Ike for a short time
and he had never been out here.  I left the floodlights on and kept
watching.  Finally about 30 minutes later I saw the reflection of two
cat eyes coming up the driveway.  I didn't let him out again until
spring.

Chaos desperately wants to go out. She's always been this way, slipping
through a one-inch open door (HTHell do they DO that?) or sitting on a box
near the door and screaming for me to open it (yes, in the wee dark hours,
too).
Of course, once she's out, she realizes (again) the world is filled with
fangs and teeth and claws and monsters. So, she usually goes no futher than
sitting on the stoop. Once in a while, she'll risk going down far enough to
chew grass. The rare occasions she's been out without my knowing it, she
promptly returns at a dead-run-for-her-life when I call her.

I'm lucky in that Oscar has zero interest in the out, at least while she's
inside.  She likes to sit at the screen and watch, but she never dashes for
the door.

Spicey sticks here head in the doorway, but doesn't cross the threshold. She
shakes her paws if its cold and windy.

Molly, our former feral made it very clear early on that she would not
accept any relationship that didn't allow her to leave at will.  Fortunately
she also is no fool and knew she had landed in clover.  So she doesn't go
far or stay out long.  I suspect we may be in for trouble when the good
weather gets here.  If I were a cat, I'd want to stay out on some of our
summer nights.

But she may be too spoiled.  She came in this afternoon, jumped up on the
hearth.  Settled in on "her" towel.  And then looked at me to say "I'm
ready.  Where is the fire?"

Little miss will have to understand that when its 60 degrees out, we don't
have a fire.  Even if her toes are cold.

No, no, Jo....That's why we have air conditioners!!! <grin>
I've actually been known to turn it (the a/c) on so Miss Lucy can bask
in front of a fire...She's got me pretty well trained, I think!!!
