My DH wants to buy me a new digital camera as my old one is only a 1
megapic...Not wishing to spend more than $500 (if possible)...I need
help....What I do know I want is... one that is atleast a 4 megapic and has
atleast a 6x optical zoom..I'd like one that is really user friendly with
quick upload with the least amount of battery drain...I plan on not
enlarging any pics to larger than say 14x16/ or there abouts. As we have lots
of Motley Crew Kitties and quite a few that are getting up in age I wish to
get lots of pictures of them...What are the advantages of a docking port?
versus a USB uplink? What is the difference between a Secure memory card
and a Scan memory card? Can the memory sticks now out be used in a Sony?
Last I heard you had to buy Sony's memory stick at a lot higher cost!... I
need help!!!!! I've gone to camera internet sites for help, but the more I
read, the more I need first hand user help!.. If you wish to reply in
private please remove the furrr..Thanks! :-) Liz

I'd suggest looking at cnet, they have good reviews:

Also, I would very highly recommend purchasing a separate card reader
like this one:

No need to waste battery life downloading pictures to your computer.
Once you have chosen a model (we have a Fuji Finepix S602Zoom that we
love) use froogle.com and bizrate.com to find the best price online.
I would suggest a camera that uses CF or SD cards, those are the most
popular and thus cheaper alternatives.

I have a Sony Mavica that is oh, 4-5 years old now. I LOVE that camera. It
uses diskettes, not a memory stick. I did a quick search and it appears you
can buy one of the new models for under $300 and it uses either/or (diskette
or stick). The reason I love this camera is because you just pop the
diskette into your PC and decide what you want to save. And the battery
lasts a long time (gotta have the charger but I've hauled it around on two
week trips without ever having to recharge the battery). I can get 25 high
resolution photos per diskette and it has a 10X zoom, etc. Just a thought.
I like the idea of not having to run a cable in order to upload a photo.

I've got the Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom. I absolutely love it. The
quality of the pictures is awesome. It's 4 megapixels and has 10x
optical zoom. The new model that's out that has the same stats but is
physically a bit smaller is the C-770. It uses the new xd memory card
which is very small but it is a little more expensive than the flash
card or some others. But I think one 128 mb card would do you quite
well, I've been on some quite lengthy vacations and have still not run
out.
The camera uses a USB cable to upload the pics, but like Victor
mentioned, you can also get a card reader. My new computer actually
has a multi card reader built in and I love it. You just take the
card out of your camera and stick it in the slot of the card reader
and your pics appear as another drive on your PC.

Awesome. I bet I'd love it. I still am using the Olympus 2020Z that I got
several years ago. It's still a decent camera, even though now there are much
better ones.

Sherry, there are *always* better ones. Just like there are always better
computers. I have to stop myself (okay, it's easy since I don't have a job)
from succumbing to the latest, greatest, fastest, bestest technology... just
tell yourself, it still works great, there is nothing wrong with it. If
need be, go to a web site selling the item, put it in your shopping cart,
pile up the cart with accessories to go with, then delete it all from the
cart. You'll feel like you've been "shopping" ;)
