"Important Notice: AOL Newsgroup Service

Hisspit. Where did you see this notice? Is it posted on AOL itself?
I've been using http://talkaboutpets.com/group/rec.pets.cats.anecdotes/ to post to RPCA (and *.community to post to RPCC). It's free and you can access it via a web browser.
There's a post a few topics ago, which can be found here: http://talkaboutpets.com/group/rec.pets.cats.anecdotes/messages/267790.html that said that this notice is not true. So here's hoping it's a mistake.

Helen C Simmons - 25 Jan 2005 18:31 GMT > Hisspit. Where did you see this notice? Is it posted on AOL itself? On AOL - they are putting a pop-up box with the message in when you access newsgroups. It's the straw that's broken the camel's back for me & as you can see, I've a new ISP. Now got the hassle of changing all my addresses.. bookmarks..

After the changes of a few months ago, I find it pretty tough to simply browse a group there, as opposed to searching, which works fine.

Now I've got all the PITA of moving bookmarks, addresses... etc., etc., etc. But at least I can get newsgroups!

TBird - 24 Jan 2005 22:31 GMT This wouldn't be so damn rude if they'd let you use Outlook or some other news reader.
I ditched AOL two years ago after multiple outages.
They never canceled my accout, nor did they send me bills. I never used AOL anymore so I didn't notice until I could no longer access my AIM through Trillian. I assumed it was Trillians fault and deleted the program. Turned out AOL had me delinguent on almost $100 worth of service I had canceled and wasn't using anymore. I told them where to stuff it.
It takes a while to get un-coddled from AOL an learn how to use other programs, but it's WORTH IT.

But why don't you just use individual.net. They're great and they're free. Only text ng's though, no binaries. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. Helen C Simmons - 26 Jan 2005 14:03 GMT > Helen, you didn't understand why it's call AOHell? I have to say that over here in the UK, it was cheap (unmetered access, no time-outs, no call charges for an entirely reasonable monthly fee), it did what it said on the tin, so to speak, and it was easy to use. Plus the spam filters were excellent and also the parental controls - all easy to use stuff that did what it was supposed to do. If it wasn't for the dropping of Usenet, I'd still be on AOL, as it gave few technical problems. It seems there's a certain amount of snobbery attached to not using AOL (not aimed at you personally) but that never bothered me. It did what I required - until now :-)
As it is, my new ISP is working fine, so I'm happy again.
Cheers, helen s

It did > what I required - until now :-) I just find their ads offensive, as they typically advertise "features" that are available elsewhere for free. For years, they advertised that you can use AIM as though it were a key reason to use AOL as an ISP, even though they themselves made AIM freely available.
Then again, I am suspicious of any "all in one" software package, as well as anything that markets itself to the less-geeky crowd of computer users. I simply want my ISP to give me a pipe to the internet, preferably with a static IP so I can run servers, and I'll cobble together the rest myself. I do understand that many people would find that tedious, unnecessary, and possibly frustrating.
