Captain and Stanley are settling in fabulously. But there's one problem.
Captain is sneezing and Stanley is coughing.

I suspect it's some sort of kennel cough from being in the shelter. (A few
of the kitties in there had the sneezies.) They're eating, drinking, and
using the litterbox, so whatever this is, it hasn't affected THAT so far.

The trouble is, we're being hit by bad weather. Up to 18 inches of snow is
predicted from this storm, up to a foot of which has already come down,
and more may be on the way tomorrow. Because of this, I don't know how
soon I can get the boys to the vet. It depends on how much more snow we
get and when I can schedule an appointment.

So please purr that it's nothing serious, that the boys shake off their
symptoms, and that I can get them to the vet for a physical ASAP no matter
what. I want their first days in their new OneTrueHome to start out on the
right foot. Er, paw. ;o)

Purrs en route. Maybe you could put a vaporizer on for them or steam up the
bathroom for a few minutes of steam therapy. It might help.

Thanks for a great idea! I set up a vaporizer in the basement a little
while ago.

The boys were fascinated. Before I put the top on, they thought it was a
really neat new kind of water bowl and started drinking out of it. LOL.

Then I maneuvered the top into position (between curiously sniffing kitty
noses) and turned it on. Pair of fearless fuzzballs that they are, they
were more fascinated than alarmed at the new noise.

They checked the vaporizer out for a little while, but quickly lost
interest as soon as they realized that they couldn't play with it or eat
it.

I'll keep the vaporizer going and I hope it helps the little guys breathe
easier.

Purrs and healthy thoughts and wishes for Captain and Stanley.  It is,
unfortunately, not unusual to have "kennel Cough" or even an upper
respiratory infections after being in a shelter.  It is just about
impossible to isolate diseases before they happen, sometimes.

Calvin, our foster cat, is recovering from an URI.  He's doing fine, but
I'm afraid that he caught it from Tanada, who had a cold.  They kept
sniffing under Mandy's door at each other and apparently spread it that
way.  Since he was in run down condition to begin with, Calvin was very
susceptible to Tanada's colb.

He's such a sweetie though and seems confused by Tanada's attempts to
dominate him.  He lets her do her thing and then goes on his own way.
She gets frustrated because he won't run from her any more.

Purrs for your new babies -- my good friend Kristin just adopted a kitty
from the humane society and her kitty had an upper respiratory infection,
too, and is now on Clavamox.  Keep a close eye on them, maybe you can run a
vaporizer for them or take them in a steamy bathroom.

We'll be at the vet ASAP, hopefully tomorrow if all goes well. In the
meantime, I do have a vaporizer set up in the basement. They spent all
night down there (it's where the cats' food, water, litterboxes, and beds
are). They are still sneezing and coughing, but less often. I think it
helped them.

I'm so glad they're such mellow, tolerant kitties. So far, they've let me
handle them any way I like, including combing them, examining their claws
and wiping their noses clean, without objection. That will help if I find
myself having to dose them with meds.

Of course, when (I'm sure it's "when") I get meds to help them get over
their respiratory infections, I hope I'll be able to dose them by mixing
it into cat food. BOY, will that make life easier.

I was able to get my former feral, Tucker, to take his liquid Amoxycillin by
doing the following:
I bought vanilla Yoplait (custard style) yogurt and put it on a spoon and
let him lick it; he loved it.  Then a little at a time I added a bit of the
pink medicine on the same spoon "behind" a blob of vanilla yogurt.  That
tongue just lapped it up like the yogurt.  He got used to the flavor and now
I'm able to always get him to take this medicine this way.  I got lucky.
Otherwise, I use pill poppers and they work pretty okay for me, too.  I have
heard of a product you can get online called "Pill Pockets" and I've
actually seen them at a pet store, too.  Here's a link I found just now:
http://store.yahoo.com/entirelypets/pillpockets.html.

I hope this gives you some options if and when the time comes to medicate!

Aww!  Poor little boys!  Our Russian Blue female, Natasha, had a URI
when she came from the shelter.  Her eyes were seeping too and she
needed a  cream put in them twice a day.  I'm afraid it's just one of
those things that happens when you have a lot of cats moving through a
limited space.

If cuteness cures anything, yours will be right as rain in few days.

When we first got Lizzie from our local shelter (Dec 12, 2002), she was
kinda snuffly & sneezy.  She saw the vet the first day we had her, he
reccomended just keeping her in a warmer climate & good food.  He only
reccomended medicating her if it didn't get better in a day or so.  But it
went away on it's own.

Keep an eye of them. If they start not eating/playing, then it's time to
go to TED. We'll be purring for them!

Welcome to Captian and Stanley! Purrs that they get over their
sneezes and sniffles quickly. It can be so worrisome, but it is very
very common.

Lots of purrs that Captain and Stanley have only a minor bug that can be
treated right away (warming purrs to melt snow on the way as well).  I'm
sure settling into their new OneTrueHome is going to help a lot in that
healing process as well as having a Meowmy and Paw who care.
