Bev - 22 Jan 2005 18:14 GMT I have a suggestion for this. Instead of having a competition which always divides people into one winner and a heap of losers and sometimes results in hurt feelings by people feeling their stories were left out, why not have a readathon of all David's stories and nominate the best. I have read every one of them and they are so good. I laughed and laughed and it gave me such an insight into his interesting life. I think Paddy would love to hear our comments and join in our laughter at the best of them. This would be the best medicine of all for her. I suspect a lot of people here now were not around when David posted the stories. This would ensure that the stories would be all read by newcomers who simply haven't had the time to do so up until now.

I've never been very keen on competitions of any kind. This sounds like a good way to commemorate David and his inimitable style.

I don't like the idea of competitions either, they always bring out my fortress mentality. Personally, I like the idea of making a book out of Dave's stories (with Patty's permission) and selling copies of them to defray the cost. I know I'd like to buy a copy of his work.

I'd buy a copy too. When I talked to David when we were in L.A. he told me he had published books himself and did well at it too it seemed. Believe me, that is quite an achievement. They were technical books, if I remember rightly.
I also really dislike competitions - in my experience they bring out the worst in people. I have been on winning and losing sides so I know how it feels from a writing point of view. I always feel that sending stuff off to an publisher is a bit like a competition - when it is rejected it feels horrible, as if it is a personal insult (not at all the case, of course, just a practical, commercial decision). And there was the time I got second in a story writing competition and the winner was a lovely woman who felt bad about my travelling quite a way to only pick up second prize (they wouldn't tell you in advance) I wasn't resentful, just depressed.
Winning can be just as bad - I won a big competition once worth several thousand and at the prize giving a woman came up to me and said with real hate that it wasn't fair, burst into tears and finished by saying she should have won, sheeeeeesh it ruined the evening. I spent a time with her crying on my shoulder. Who needs it - it was the last time I entered a competition!!! The point is I still felt bad because I felt sorry for the woman who needed the money more than I did.
For me anyway, rejection is always depressing, I feel unloved and worthless and suspect a lot of writers including some in the group, feel the same way. We are all a sensitive lot and it takes a lot of courage to put down your thoughts for all the world to see :)

Ah well, the road to hell is paved with good intentions....

It may be that a lot of people would like to have a competition and that I am just an over-sensitive, neurotic twit, lol.
((((hugs))))

I think the important thing is that we honour Dave's memory by doing something that is something Dave would like, and of course the group feels is appropriate.
The competition idea was just one idea to be kicked around. Some people have perfectly reasonable objections to it, so we can dismiss this one idea and move onto another. No great loss, but if we didn't think about it now whilst the discussion and ideas are coming through, once a decision was made it would have been too late, even if it turned out to be a great idea. So I'm happy enough for people to say "nah, not for me" *now* when there is still time to think about such things than "D'oh, why didn't you suggest that earlier?" at a later point.

And if Dave were on that road, he'd be laughing his head off and joking with the Devil. Or playing jokes on the devil, knowing Dave. I find myself thinking of the bumper sticker that read: Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'd take over.

Worse, I feel badly for all those who have written great posts and aren't mentioned. I love reading all the stories posted in here and would feel badly if they weren't recognized.
So I think that a book in Dave's memory would be best. Either a publishing of his work, or those who want writing a story in his memory. Personally, I want both, but what I want and a buck will buy a cup of bad coffee.

I agree Bev. There are *SO* many great, funny, compassionate, and witty posts from Dave. I've only had a chance to read a few of them so far - RL is still kicking my butt - but I can't wait to get back to reading them.
I've felt I've been divisive to the group a few times, and I wouldn't want to see it happen again. Ever post and poster here is dear and worthy in their own special way, and each should be cherished and rewarded.

Gabey8 - 23 Jan 2005 05:31 GMT Or how about this... we can nominate jokes, news stories, or posts from OTHER sources (newsgroups or internet message boards) that are funny, light-hearted, etc.
Then we're not competing against each other, even indirectly, but we're keeping an eye open for the kind of humor that Dave would have appreciated.
Of course, if his posts and/or a compilation of stories from RPCAers make their way into book form, COUNT ME IN. I want one. Several, actually -- I have friends for whom it would make a great gift.
Also, seeing his posts repeated here would be great. I've seen some of the compilation of them on the websites listed in another post, and GOOD GRIEF they're a riot. There are a few that I haven't read in months, but STILL giggle out loud when I think of them. :o) And there are others that I'm sure I haven't seen yet, because for the past few years I've been on the ng off-and-on, rather than on a regular basis.
Those are just some thoughts I had.

If there's any money to be made from the sale of such a book, might it be worth channelling it into the emergency fund?
