You might recall that about a year ago I posted about my Mom needing
purrs for her breast cancer surgery. She did quite well - they removed
the cancerous lump and one lymph node, and recovered from surgery quite
nicely. Did radiation and chemo, without the extreme nausea problems
that so many patients experience.

For the last month or so she has been complaining of extreme back pain.
SHe was claiming it was muscle spasms, but we thought it had to be more
than that and kept after to go to the doctor. She went in today for an
MRI and they determined that she has a cancerous tumor on her spine.

The doc that did the scan today has scheduled her to begin radiation
immediately. SHe won't be able to get in to see her regular oncologist
for a couple more days.

She could definitely use purrs to make it through this whole thing.
We're all really, really scared and worried for her.

Mega purrs coming that her therapy goes well.  Tell her to keep fighting!
They are making fantastic strides forward in treating cancer these days.
Every day she beats it there's that much more chance they'll find a
permanent cure that will work for her.

Dan,

Purrs coming your way.  It is hard, isn't it.  My mother is going
through something similar right now--started with breast, but now is in
her lung.  She has a very positive attitude that is helping to get her
through it, so I'm sending positive attitude purrs your way.

Purrs and healing thoughts and wishes from us here.  There are usenet
cancer support groups that can give you information and support from a
lot of people.

Purrs and healing thoughts.

There really have been recent developments that give additional hope for
minimizing the complications of bone metastasis. One of the problems had
been that radiation would weaken the bone and cause fractures. Current
practice, however, is to give anti-osteoporosis drugs such as the
biphosphonates, which strengthen the bone.

For everyone, the rate of advances in breast cancer treatment, over the
last year or two, are stunning even to someone used to following the
scientific literature.  In clinical trials, the equivalent of a "hole in
one" is having the safety review board stop the trial because the
experimental treatment is so superior that it would be unethical to
withhold it from people on the (control) best accepted treatment.  There
have been at least two such events with the new family of aromatase
inhibitors, which showed major superiority over tamoxifen -- which
itself was a major breakthrough. It may be that they are useful in
combination, and there are several aromatase inhibitors. Overall,
though, long-term survival and quality of life are improving immensely
-- it is, indeed, a situation where there are new techniques coming out
every few months.

Thanks for the purrs and for the information. I just forwarded a copy of
your post to my mom for her info. She has worked at the county medical
center as a medical transcriber for close to 20 years, so she'll be
interested in reading that info.

As much time as I spend on Usenet every day, I never though of looking
for Usenet support groups! Thanks for the pointer. I'll check that out.

Naturally! I'm so sorry, Dan. I hope your mother will overcome this as she
did her breast cancer. Even so... the spine is NOT a good location for a
tumor of any kind...

Purrs and prayers on the way.
