Since I've started using a wireless laser mouse (Logitech MX1000), I don't
need a mousepad.
This is a good thing, because when my house was looted, they even stole the
mousepad.
This is a bad thing, because Chaos has discovered there's a nice open space
on my desk just right for curling up in and purring demands for
chin-scratching.

LOL!  "Neat" and "trash", isn't that an oxymoron?

I only had a car broken into one time.  I had just moved into the place and
had my halloween costume in a box in the back seat.  All they stole was the
long black wig.  Go figure.

Several years ago, I had some items in the center console of my Jeep stolen:
a Mag flashlite (the 3 C-cell size) and a couple of cassette tapes.  The
cassettes probably ruined their tape deck (I hope it was their expensive
boom box/ghetto blaster LOL) as they had been literally soaked in Sprite at
one point when a cup busted and flooded the cup-holder area of the Jeep,
those cassettes were literally floating in about 16ozs of Sprite.   Sticky
stuff is *not* good for a cassette deck, so I threw them in the console and
kept forgetting to remove them and pitch them. Flashlites are replaceable,
so I never reported it.  Dumb crooks. Not to mention that I hardly ever lock
the Jeep - it's a soft-top so if they *really* want to get in their, all it
takes is the knowlege that the 'windows' can be unzipped from the outside,
or (since criminals rarely use thier brains to begin with) a pocket knife
(or even nail clippers) to cut your way in.

I had my broken into and all that was missing was a bag of potato chips. I
figure someone was REALLY hungry and did not begrudge them. Another time
someone stole the grill. I thought that was a bit odd.

Stupid crook time!!  There have been a rash of robberies in our
neighborhood.  I know they've been casing our house as they tried the
one on our right and were scared off by the alarm, and successfully
broke into and looted the house on our left.  We've been dealing with
computer boxes etc. so the crooks have to know we have goodies.

This morning I was taking a kid to work.  When I started the van, QC
shot out from under it.  Strange.  None of us could figure out how
and/or when he got out.  We put him back into the house and told Mike
about QC getting out.

Mike looked outside and noticed that the door to the enclosure was wide
open.  Apparently, the crooks have been casing the house and everything
is kept locked up, except for the enclosure.  To get from the enclosure
to the window for our bedroom, one would have to find a way through a 3'
long "tunnel."  It is about six inches wide by ten inches tall and ends
at the window which is sealed closed with a 2" X 12" board, caulking,
screws, and a cat door.  The cat door is 4" x 6" and there is no way
anyone is getting in through it.  However, the crooks tried.  They were
so stupid that they couldn't figure out how to open the enclosure door
without wiring it open.

Not only that, but the last time everyone was gone from the house was
Wednesday evening.  Had the crooks succeeded in breaking in, they would
have found people at home.  And there were cars in front of the house at
all times.

When I got my last computer I didn't want to attract attention so I drove
the boxes to the grocery store and deposited them in the big bins out back.

I've lived in apartment buildings with shared dumpsters for some time.
I figure no thief is going to go to the bother of figuring out *which*
apartment just bought a PDA/DVD player/whatever. IMO, thieves are lazy
types to begin with [starting with they can't be bothered to do honest
work for a living].

True enough.  My apartment complex is rather unique.  We each have a fenced
in spot for our own trash can which the pickup folks can access without
coming onto the fenced patio.  But boxes are to be put out behind the patio
fence.  I figured it was better safe than sorry.

I wasn't disagreeing with your handling of your situation, just
mentioning the arrangements I've fortunately had for some time.

Oh, I know that, Seanette!  Just thought it might be a helpful suggestion
for someone who needed to dispose of the "evidence" of any new expensive
equipment.

And it's an excellent suggestion, Jill.  I just like to save the main
computer boxes in case I need to box up the 'puter again.  The rest got
stored until the night before trash day.  The trash men cometh early on
Thursdays.

Thieves are not known for their energy or intelligence. As a police
officer commented here last week in an interview about some arrests said
'These people are, for lack of a better word, lazy. If your house is
secured, and it is going to take some effort to break in, they will go
somewhere easier.'

And dumb. My neighbourhood is periodically targetted by burglars. I think
they're like mice; no matter what you do or where you live, they're always
present and trying to get in. Although actually, our burglars tend to be
kind of seasonal, with peaks in activity just before Christmas, and in the
summer when people are more likely to have their doors left open or go on
holidays.

Anyway, also last week, a friend noticed a young man taking something out
of the car belonging to the new people moving in next door. He would have
assumed the young man was one of the new neighbours, except he took a rock
and smashed in the window of the car door - which as it turned out, was
unlocked! Of course, my friend ran out and shouted at him and started
chasing him, so the thief had no time to grab anything but a purse. He
dropped the purse when another neighbour joined in the chase and threw
something at him, hitting him.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. If you *must* go in for daylight robbery, wouldn't you
try to open the door first? It's also a good idea to ensure that there are
no residents lurking around watching you.

Yeah, but I'm a lousy shot.  Rob is much better, but prefers a pistol,
which I won't let him have considering his mental state.

Some years ago, I stopped going to one movie theater here in
Nashville after thieves broke into all 50 cars, including mine, in a
parking lot behind the theater.  The theater had a uniformed security
guard, but he either was in on the theft or wasn't patrolling the
back lot.  The thieves didn't find anything in my car that they
wanted, but I was still out the cost of a new side window, about $120
at the time.

That particular theater eventually went out of business, as did most
of the mall it was part of, because of the high crime rate in that
neighborhood.  The mall now contains a community college and a
handful of professioaal offices, but no retail spaces except for one
restaurant catering to the college students.

I love my wireless mouse, but still use a mousepad for the wrist rest.
