I've successfully charged the battery, inserted the card and taken my
first picture.  Ted (of Ollie fame) was here and I have one of him
clutching FSP, who as usual looks suitably cross.

My memory card is 256 mb whatever that means.   Am not sure how many
pictures it will hold - I stupidly threw out the cardboard container.
We had to buy a bag for the camera - I was surprised that it didn't come
with its own bag but it seems that none of them do.  I'll soon have it
full of cat pix, hehe.

Way to go Bev, looking forward to all the pic's of B&C and FSP as well.
What brand of camera did you get? They have come down a lot in price since
we bought ours.
Hope you get many years of happy snapping.

Depends on two things:

1. The resolution of the camera, typically that's a number of MP or
MegaPixels.

2. The picture quality setting you use when taking pictures.

On my Canon 6MP camera, at best quality a 128MB stick holds ~36
pictures. If your camera has similar resolution (i.e. MP) you would
expect around 72 pictures on a 256MB stick. So if you plan on going on
holiday and taking lots of pictures you might want to take several
memory cards with you, or a laptop that you can use to download the
pictures to when you fill up the card.

And (hint, hint) you don't have to wait for the card to fill up before you
download AND POST YOUR PICTURES. ;) ;) nudge nudge

Is there no number on the corner of your screen that tells you how
many shots you have left?  There should be.  I'm sure in your manual
it will tell you about it.
I've got a 4 megapixel camera with a 128 mb card and at a picture size
of 2048 x 1536 pixels, it holds 162 pictures.  This isn't the highest
setting for my camera.  Your camera is 3.2 megapixels if I recall, so
at a similar setting you should be getting approximately twice as many
pictures onto the card.  Probably enough for a 2 week holiday.  What I
do when I go away is go through the day's shots at the end of the day
and delete any bad ones to make room for more.

Some of the prettier ones are in Tom's website
(http://soulofthegarden.com), click under Daily Muse and then go to
December 2004. I should put more online, I'll try to do that this week.

Aren't they cool? It was so cold! And it was the one day that I did not
carry my rain jacket... :(

AHA.  Then they qualify.  I have a painting in my living room that I just
love.  Its of a lake south of Anchorage Alaska.  Its a nice painting, but
not really extraordinary.  But I have been camping in a spot that would be
pretty much in the middle of the far side of the lake in the picture.  And
darn near froze my butt off.

In the summer when the mercury tops 100 here in northern California, I can
sit a look at that picture and I swear my body temperature drops a couple of
degrees.  I can't look at it and not feel cooler.

So have a good print made of your maples.  And make a point of looking at it
in the summer.  I guarantee it will make you feel cooler.

There isn't on mine, and I do not think it is a fixed number, but
dependent on factors.

mine either. depends on resolution so there is not set number.

Of course it's not a set number.  It depends on what picture size you
have it set to, how big your card is and how many pictures you've
already taken.  If you've also taken a little movie, the number will
go down very fast.  But there should be a number or some other
indication somewhere on the screen.  Mind you, I don't know how old
your cameras are.  The oldest one I've ever used was a 2000 model and
it certainly had it.  I have used Sanyo, Canon, Olympus and Sony's.
