I think this is entry 22 or 23, it's hard to keep track.

I got reminded on just how big Maine Coon kitties are.

Moose is back and he's a good 17 pounds.  He acts all sweet and
innocent with that cute little meow of his, but when I took him out to
weigh him, he started vocalizing his discomfort, and it only got
louder.

Also Dr. Z had brought in her rabbit, and put it in the cage above
Moose, so I think Moose was a bit mad that he could smell the rabbit
but not get to it.

Also next door was the other Maine Coon, Lothario.  He needed a bath,
which I'm glad I didn't try to do, but later on he needed a brushing.

I took him out and he is HEAVY!!

He's a whopping 23.4 pounds and I really had to heave him up onto the
table so I could brush him.  I needed both hands to lift him up so my
co-worker could brush his belly.

23 pounds!!!  That's the size of a turkey!!!  He would flatten out on
the table and he looked like a furry sofa cushion.

sheesh!!

Friday, a cat came in that was having trouble breathing.  She was a
tabby named Sammy.  She really didn't look good. She had bloody urine
and was quite listless.  It was after we put her on IV fluids that I
found out that she was also 18.

Well yesterday she still didn't look any better.  In the morning, I
opened the cage and was talking softly to her and gently petting her,
trying to comfort her.  THe poor thing must have been really feeling
icky.

Suddenly she turns and CHOMP!!  I now have four little teeth marks on
my forearm from her canines.  The nerve!!  I got a finger wag and
lecture from the doctor and spent a lot of tim e during the day washing
my arm.

I have to say I was lucky.  The bites were on te superficial side and
my arm isn't bright red and inflamed or anything.  It's a little pink
and a tad sore, but it feels more like a big mosquito bite really.  I
think I'll live.

Also I happen to already be on antibiotics from last monday for my
sinus infection, so I'm ahead of the game.  hehehe

but I did have to call the doctor today and let him know that I was
okay and I have to keep a close eye on it.

Sammy was so sick she did have to eventually be put down.  I don't
harbor any grudge, it was obvious she was in a lot of pain.

I wouldn't be surprised though if when Mischief smelled my arm she
thought, "Damn, someone beat me to it."
Ah well, time to have some breakfast.

I've never met a purebred Maine Coon cat, but my friend's got a kitty that
we're sure is part Maine Coon. He's one heck of a big boy!

I'm not sure what he weighs right now, though he's battling through a
recently-diagnosed food allergy issue and has lost some weight in recent
weeks. Also, he's a senior-citizen kitty now, and so there's a bit of
weight loss that can attend that. However, measured from nose to tail,
he's just BIG. And as soon as he's had a chance to be on hypo-allergenic
food for more than a few days, I'm sure that most/all of his lost weight
will return.

Considering the size of Tristan, who's only part Maine Coon, I can only
imagine how large a purebred kitty must be!

Also, sorry to hear about Sammy. Poor little kitty. But sometimes, the
only form of relief we have left to offer our faithful companions is the
final act of mercy. Purr-ayers for her, and for her human(s) too.

Great stories as usual, Mischief!  I really like hearing about what happens
from the insiders' point of view.  Purrs that your arm heals well; it
doesn't sound like you'll have any problems, though.

"Lothario"!! ROFL!

Sorry about Sammy and about your arm. Hope it heals as well as you think
it will.

Just a flesh wound!!!

Yeah, it could have been a LOT worse.  I did see my supervisor get
chomped by a white Persian once, and the cat totally was chomping down.
This was more of a "I'm not feeling well so STAY AWAY!!!"

I had to almost laugh this morning because Imp wanted to wrestle.  What
will normally happen is hell show all the signs of wanting to be
scritched and then suddenly turn into a hand trap.  Well while he was
gnawing on my hand, he started nibbing on my forearm, not enough to
break the skin, but it was within inches of my bite wound

Boy, can you imagine me explaining that to the doctor?  "I was taking
care of the bite wound, honestly I was.  But my own cat decided that
since another cat found my arm edible that he would take a taste of it
too."

When I read about your mind, I flashed to that episode of "Emergency
Vets" where the lady's cat had fallen and been impaled on a fence. She
couldn't get him off, so stood there supporting him until help came.
He was in such pain he kept biting at her hands, and she ended up with
a really nasty infection in both hands, to the extent that there was a
real possibility they might have to be amputated. In the end all
turned out well - kitty made a full recovery, and so did her hands.

Er... make that "When I read about your bite"

I'll make no attempts at reading Mischief's mind. I have enough
trouble reading my own.

Oh yeah, I remember that episode.  As I recall the cat bit her several
times.  Fortunately this cat only got me once, and I shut the cage door
after it happened.

In a situation where you are trying to help a cat that's been impaled
in a fence, I would expect bites to happen.

in this case however, this cat appeared so ill and weak that I was a
bit surprised that she got me.

Of course I should have left her alone in the first place, which was my
initial mistake.  I felt extreme sympathy for the poor kitty, but in
cases like this when an animal is feeling icky it is better to let the
animal be.

I've learned my lesson, and do not plan on having it happen again.  :)
