Purr for terrified wild critter?

Pat - 14 Jan 2005 04:02 GMT Since this morning a beautiful raccoon has been about 15' up in a tree near the barn and won't come down due to Gloria's d*gs. She took them in the house for several hours this afternoon to give the critter a chance to get away but it was still cowering up there when the sun went down, even tho the d*gs were not around. It was all huddled into a ball trying to keep warm (our weather turned from balmy to frigid overnight). Poor thing poked its head out to look at me every time I went past that tree and I was wishing that if I held up my arms and invited it to me carry it safely to the woods, it would just come to me like a cat. Please send any spare purrs for this precious sweetie to get down and away safely during the night. Thanks.

I have never said a good word about dogs--until now. I hope Gloria's dogs kill the thing. Raccoons are vermin because they attack cats. They also steal food left out for feral cats. I've had the filthy raccoons on my own sundeck! Don't feel sorry for this so-called 'cute' animal. Save your purrs for cats.

The raccoons around here live in peace with the cats. So do the other wild critters, except the ones the cats like to hunt.
Gloria's very well fed dogs attack and kill AND WASTE every living creature that comes within 200' of her house (or mine, if they come down here and happen to see one of our little wild friends) - including baby fawns, baby rabbits, baby birds, baby squirrels, baby anything wild. They kill for the killing only. That raccon as done no harm to any of us.

That raccon as done no harm to any of us. perhaps not, but did you know that many raccoons carry a specific type of roundworm called Baylisascarus procyonis which is DEADLY to humans? Whatever you do, do NOT touch a raccoon if given the chance because they're easily transmissible. Not to mention raccoons are a fairly common source of rabies.

Can you get it by bare-footing or anything like that? On second thought, don't tell me.

I wonder how it is that cats are deserving of human kindness, but dogs are apparently only to be tolerated (if that?) and raccoons are a plague upon the land.
Someone please give me the official list so that I can know what creatures, great and small, I'm supposed to like.

I've loved cats and dogs, and once had a very good raccoon friend, who had been hand-raised. Nevertheless, the current incidence of rabies among raccoons makes them dangerous in urban areas. IIRC, Maryland does have a vaccine bait program, and that may be a long-term solution.

Where I live, in LA, California law prohibits feeding of skunks, possums, and raccoons. This does not prevent me from wishing the little critters well as they attempt to fit in with the human population. If they didn't steal the fruit from my trees, I could care less about how they get by. Still, I'm sending purrs that this little fellow will work out his destiny and either pass on his/her genes or no, depending on natural law.

Unfortunately, it's a reasonable safety rule, in many areas, to assume that a raccoon (possibly not an immature one) that allows itself to be seen in daylight is rabid. Keep your distance.
In my area, the Washington DC suburbs, the incidence of rabies in raccoons is such that they are no longer released in the wild when trapped, but immediately euthanized. I've delighted in one hand-raised tame raccoon I've known, but I've also seen the infection statistics on urban raccoons.
Some states are trying to alleviate the problem by dropping food containing an orally effective raccoon rabies vaccine.

I grew up in Burke, had an apartment in Fairfax (that's when I got Oscar, to keep my dog Puma (RB) company), and lived with my brother in Manassas before moving out to Colorado.

I was a DCer once too!! Lived past Georgetown up Wisconsin Avenue but can't for the life of me remember the name of the area (Huidekoper Place); my daughter was born in DC, Garfield Hospital (which probably doesn't exist any more - it was old then!) We lived in Alexandria for a year, then ended up in Annandale before moving to Florida.

Apropos of Cambridge, as long as I'm off topic:
An obvious student rolled his grocerty cart, laden to the top, to the "10 or fewere items line". The cashier said not a word, until the last bag was packed, and then inquired:

But as others have said, keep your distance - the incidence of rabies in raccoons in the states is way high.
I hate seeing any creature terrified, hurt, or hungry. That's why there's always food and water on my deck for all comers. When I tried to trap the little gray cat with the too tight flea collar (BTW, I saw her recently and the collar was gone - she comes and goes and sometimes I don't see her for weeks, so I'm suspecting she's someone's not-very-well-cared-for kitty), I caught 3 racoons, 2 possums, a skunk, and a squirrel - none of whom were very happy about being disturbed from their daily free meal!! ;>

As I said else-thread, CA law prohibits feeding of raccoons, skunks, or possums. We have food out for the neighborhood feral kitties, but bring the food in at night so we won't attract any of the three no-no species. I have nothing against them, except when the raccoons steal the figs from my fig tree, but I don't want to encourage them either.
