I was on a conference call (I'm working from home today) and when I hung
up I turned around and shifted position on the chair, so I ended up
looking straight at Issa. He was sleeping on a bed near me, but he woke
up when I moved on the chair. He looked in my direction and hissed! I
talked to him asking what was wrong and he hissed again! I must mention
that Issa never hisses... ever! I approached him to pet him and he
hissed again. I petted him some and then got back on the computer, but I
kept an eye on Issa. I looked behind me, in case Maya was standing there
and she was the target of Issa's hisses, but she wasn't there. Issa
scurried over to the base of the large cat tree and went inside the
lower box.
I wonder if he was having a bad dream...???

I wonder if he just didn't recognize you for some reason. SInce he was
sleeping, maybe he was just all disoriented.

But he doesn't hiss at strangers either! He runs to them for scritches,
the little love bug. :)

OK, Victor. Give it up. What on earth did you do to poor Issa? The sweet
little thing.

Sometimes they just do that. A cat will occasionally hiss or softly
bite from too much petting and stimulation. My boy Sumo is most prone
of mine to do this. I usually pull my hand back, then move it slowly,
palm down, towards him as one would do to a strange dog, pet him a few
times and then just leave him alone.
I'm sure it's no big deal. Of course if he keeps rejecting your and
Tom's friendly advances while seeming to be in discomfort, it TED
time.

Could have been a passing bad spirit that he was warning off. I've never
encountered the supernatural, but cats seem to be a bit supernatural
themselves, so I think it's possible they may see into other realms.

When I was first adopted by Persia she seemed to have an unusual fear of the
guest bathroom. She'd stare at the walls and then get all puffed up and
yowl and run from the room. I figured there was something in there she
didn't like. But whatever it was, she must have chased it away. The most
she does these days is sit on the toilet and demand to know why I'm getting
myself all wet in the shower. (I use that shower when I - ahem - wash away
my grey; the water pressure is stronger than in my master bath.)
